California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said Tuesday that President Trump knows Republicans will “get crushed” in this year’s midterms, touting his state’s approval of a redistricting proposal in November that handed more seats to Democrats.
“Trump is an historic president, historically unpopular. He’s going to get crushed, shellacked in the midterms. He is, he’s toast, and he knows it. Why else did he call [Texas Gov.] Greg Abbott [(R)] saying he’s quote, unquote ‘entitled’ to five seats in a mid-decade redistricting?” Newsom told ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel in an interview on his show.
“They, of course, obliged in Texas. What Trump thought would follow was maybe a conversation about writing an op-ed in California to try to win the argument as they’re consolidating power. Instead, we decided to redraw the lines, and over a 90-day period, raised $120 million and we kicked his a– in November,” he added.
In November, Californians voted to approve Proposition 50, which let the state bypass its independent redistricting commission and pass a new Democratic-leaning House map, giving Democrats four or five pickup opportunities in the midterms.
The California governor pulled the trigger on the special election for the proposition after the GOP in Texas passed a Republican-leaning House map under pressure from the White House and national Republicans.
Republicans are facing major headwinds heading into November, with voters souring on Trump’s handling of the economy and immigration, typically two of his strongest issues. Many in the Republican base are also frustrated with the party over its handling of the Epstein files, while the war in Iran risks alienating Trump’s “America First” supporters.
In a polling average from Decision Desk HQ, Trump’s approval rating sits at 42.6 percent and his disapproval rating is at 55.4 percent.
Newsom has been floated as a possible 2028 presidential contender, alongside other Democratic governors including JB Pritzker (Ill.), Andy Beshear (Ky.) and Gretchen Whitmer (Mich.)….
