Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City on Tuesday, capping a stunning ascent for the 34-year-old state lawmaker, who was set to become the city’s most liberal mayor in generations.
In a victory for the Democratic party’s progressive wing, Mamdani defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani must now navigate the unending demands of America’s biggest city and deliver on ambitious — skeptics say unrealistic — campaign promises.
With the victory, the democratic socialist will etch his place in history as the city’s first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage and the first born in Africa. He will also become the city’s youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office on Jan. 1…..

Voters in races across the country backed Democrats, including in New York’s mayoral race and contests for governor in New Jersey and Virginia, rejecting President Donald Trump’s late and lightweight push for his preferred candidates.
Though the candidates and local issues all played a role in the results, voter attitudes about the president and his agenda were central to their choices and offered the first clear review from voters of Trump’s agenda just nine months after he returned to power.
Top Democrats celebrated the results as a major victory over Trump. The president meanwhile was quick to respond to the results on Tuesday night with a defensive social media post after results came. Citing pollsters, Trump said that “TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT,” and the federal government shutdown “WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT.”
In Virginia, where there’s a concentration of federal workers impacted by the government shutdown and Trump’s sweeping layoffs of the federal workforce, voters flipped control of the governor’s mansion and elected Democrat Abigail Spanberger as the state’s first female to lead the state. In New Jersey, where Trump endorsed the Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli and held several tele-rallies on his behalf, voters instead chose to keep Democrats in power and elected Congresswoman Mikie Sherill.
New York City is Trump’s hometown but he remains widely unpopular in the Democratic stronghold. His frequent comments and social media posts warning that the nation’s largest city would slip into ruin if Democrat Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, was elected mayor may have narrowed the race some, but Trump’s late endorsement of independent former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who stepped down following a scandal four years ago, may have backfired.
Here’s what to know about Election Night 2025:
- Voters cast ballots in about half of states, including two competitive governor’s races: In Virginia, voters chose Democrat Abigail Spanberger as the state’s first female governor. The former congresswoman defeated Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears. Trump notably did not endorse her by name and only urged people to vote for GOP candidates. In New Jersey, voters elected Democratic U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill over Trump-backed Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a former state lawmaker. The governor’s races took on an outsize role in a year when Trump has battled with governors and mayors as he’s deployed National Guard troops and immigration agents across cities and states.
- Impact on national politics next year and beyond: The one contest on Tuesday that may do the most to shape national politics going forward is a measure on the ballot in California, where voters will decide whether to approve a new congressional map that could flip as many as five Republican-held U.S. House seats to Democratic control in the 2026 midterm elections. California’s Proposition 50 is a response to Trump’s gerrymandering push to keep the U.S. House under Republican control in the 2026 midterms….

From an earlier converstaion here….
Been to the ‘Big Apple ‘ lately?
NYC is a very different place
A influx of East Asian’s
Million’s of people unable to own their own homes
Pockets of poverty
And?
Outer borough’s with civil servants that do own a piece of the rock that will not vote for Mamdani who will try to tax them to pay for ‘free’ stuff?
White’s continue to flee the intercity for Long Island and the Carolina’s
A Mamdani will will be isolated incident
Further confusing Democrats across the nation…
First words out of Mamdani’s mouth in his victory statement is to praise convicted felon Eugene Debs.
New York City is screwed.
He is going full militant off the bat in his victory speech.
He is not even going to pretend he wants to “bring people together.”
He is a radical ideologue megalomaniac. The first part much unlike Trump, the second part much like him.
Get OVER it CG…..
He’s gotta govern…..(Obama warned him)
He’s gonna be a one termer and like Trump?
He’s gonna try to do things his way…..
Wait…..
He sounds absolutely nothing like Obama He has no intention of compromising.
The first words out of his mouth were about Eugene Debs (a convicted felon.)
I doubt you know much about Eugene Debs.
In my home County of Nassau….
Opposite ….
Republicans keep their jobs….
Later…..
Gonna be more in the morning including Donald, the guy from Queens , pronbably talking a LOT of BS…..
I see our friend Corey Gross has a new boogie man.
Clean up your own house Corey before you bring your bullshit to the table.
Question: have you even been to New York? I think not.
The Republican Party has a lot to answer for and the voters began that process last night. The Democrats over preformed across the Nation. We have two new women Governors who were expected to have closer races and they both won in a walk. I was particularly pleased about the Virginia legislature and Georgia wins.
But a politician praised Eugene Debs last night!! A felon from a century ago. How could he? Coming from the person who earlier in the day praised a war criminal who told lies to start a war that killed thousands.,
Strange moral code there, still what abouting when your Party has gone full racist.
Note to Corey, the transgender thing didn’t work this time., I guess your only play is the Muslim stuff.
Now that the election is over and he won, Mamdani no longer feels the need to smile.
Kathy Hochul and Hakeem Jeffries have to literally be cringing watching this speech.
Like the Trump apologists, they own this.
They do NOT ‘own’ anything…..
Mamdani I suspect is gonna be a VERY LONEY Mayor until he tries to move to the middle…..
Even AOC had to do the same thing….
Again?
Wait….
This is not the speech of a politician who wants to reach out or govern in a cooperative way.
He wants to go to war with whom he considers his enemies. So much like Trump. At least on Election Night after he won, Trump would act sort of sheepish and embarassed for a short time.
This guy thinks he has an absolute mandate.
Lots of January 6 energy in his victory speech.
Many people will like that. Others will be horrified.
I thought Mamdani’s victory speech (I hadn’t heard him before, nor the mayoral debates) was the finest I’ve heard since Barack Obama, Ronald Reagan and the Kennedys.
Let alone Eugene V. Debs (Socialist presidential candidate 1900, 1904, 1908, 1912 and — from prison — 1920) who was convicted for running afoul of Woodrow Wilson’s draconian Espionage Act of 1917 — the kind of law that Donald Trump likes to use or enact against any who stands up to him.
Debs’ address to the court before being sentenced began:
“Your honor, years ago I recognized my kinship with all living beings, and I made up my mind that I was not one bit better than the meanest on earth. I said then, and I say now, that while there is a lower class, I am in it, while there is a criminal element I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free.
“I listened to all that was said in this court in support and justification of this prosecution, but my mind remains unchanged. I look upon the Espionage Law as a despotic enactment in flagrant conflict with democratic principles and with the spirit of free institutions.
“Your honor, I have stated in this court that I am opposed to the social system in which we live; that I believe in a fundamental change, but if possible by peaceable and orderly means…”
Debs was fighting the kind of repressive law that Donald Trump loves to use (or create)
Thanks DSD. I have a similar take on Mamdani.
Thanks for this history lesson.
The new Mayor has his work cut out for him and I wish him success.
He’s inspired lots of young people across the country. Is it any wonder why Republicans want to demonize him?
Here’s a link to Mamdani’s full victory speech last Tuesday night (about 23 minutes). As I wrote to my local DSA comrades, “In my humble opinion, and independent of ideology, this has been the finest political oratory I’ve heard since Obama, Reagan, M.L. King and the Kennedys. I’m no New Yorker, but notice Zohran’s references to day-day (or night-night) workers, to different uncelebrated places in NYC, to Fiorello La Guardia and (not least) to Eugene Victor Debs.”

So apparently Alan Dershowitz said he’d blow his brains out on live TV if Mamdani.became NYC mayor..
Screenshot, the lengths creeps on the Epstein list will go to.
Sheesh. Not screenshot
JD Vance’s half brother –Cory Bowman–got skunked in the Cincinnati mayoral race. The incumbent Mayor Pyreval won 78% to Bowman 21%
Islamophobia is said to be America’s last acceptable bigotry. And every day, our guy Pam Geller, I mean Corey, proves this true.
Fitting that Mamdani wins the same day Dick Cheney died and was instantly forgotten. Really shows where things are going, and thank God for it.
In all my criticism of Mamdani, I have never said one word about him being Muslim. That is not an issue to me. I have opposed Islamaphobia all my life. It was among the very first things that outraged me about the Trump Presidential campaign. I spoke out against it when it was used against Mamdani in this race. He does not remind me of 9/11, He reminds me of january 6.
Democrats had a good night by electing two relatively moderate Governors, who gave fine speeches last night that were completely different than what Mamdani did, but perhaps his style is m0re in line with where the party is headed. A Muslim won VA Lt Governor and nobody in the mainstream is any way offended or scared by that. It is a good moment for America.
The bottom line is that Mamdani is an extremist. It is a bad look for your party. I am no longer a Republican but even when I still held out hope I could remain one, I spoke out against extremism in my party. Democrats will find themselves needing to do the same about Mamdani. Many people across the spectrum commented that the guy who gave the speech last night sounded very much unlike the one that campaigned.
Finally, Dick Cheney was a patriot, as folks like Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris confirmed yesterday.
Like I said Corey Gross, clean up your own party before you start calling the newly elected Mayor of New York an extremist. Especially since you think a war criminal who is directly responsible for the deaths of thousands of his fellow country men is a patriot.
The Republicans have run on their racist lies since Nixon devised the Southern Strategy and they went nuts when we elected that black guy in 2008 and gave us Donald Trump eight years later (Mr. Birth Certificate).
Now if it isn’t transgender (they may want to play sports you know) it’s Muslim hate and lies.
You can’t make Mandani the face to the Democratic Party although I am sure you will try Corey. Face it you all got your butts kicked last night.
There are several reports from New York of synagogues and Jewish schools that were defaced overnight.
Mayor-Elect Mamdani has condemned those actions and says he will “root out the scourge.”
I very much hope he means it. It cannot be understated how scary many Jewish-Americans find life in America these days, with profoundly increased hatred being directed at them by both the far left and far right, and I assume it is probably far scarier in New York City than where I am.
CG?
I HAVE pointed out here
SEVERAL TIMES that Mamdani will have to govern from the center…,,
He has a tough/rough job ahead of him
Media will Not it easy for him
FYI?
Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg , the only prosecutor to charge Donald J. Trump with a crime AND GET A CONVICTION was ReElected with + 70% of the vote……
