Senate Minority Leader Schumer IS under HUGE Pressure to NOT just give-up on keeping the healthcare support…
Trump IS being blamed for the shutdown ‘s growing affects….
The healthcare ssubsitieos IS important to Americans in Blue and Red States ….
One gets the impression that Trump, fresh from getting little in his foreign affairs deal making is hard to get something from Democrats…
He’s already losing on try to get Republican Senator’s to scrap the 60 vote super majority rule on this….
(Actually some GOPer’s and Dem’s are working on a compromise)
Republicans ARE More scared of Trump than helping Americans afford healthcare….
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Friday that Democrats would vote to end the government shutdown in exchange for a one-year extension of expiring ACA tax credits, multiple sources told Axios.
Why it matters: Democrats, emboldened by sweeping election victories this week, are adamant that Republicans must make concessions on health care before opening the government.
- But Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) rejected the offer, calling it a “non-starter.”
- “I think it’s an indication that they’re feeling the heat, and they know that their last proposal was unserious and unrealistic,” Thune told reporters. “I just don’t think that it gets anywhere close to what we need to do here.”
- Thune has kept lawmakers on Capitol Hill for a rare Friday session — and could hold votes over the weekend on opening the government.
What they are saying: “Democrats are offering a very simple compromise,” Schumer said on the Senate floor. “Democrats are ready to clear the way to quickly pass a government funding bill that includes health care affordability.”
- The proposal has been pushed internally by Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.), a key moderate negotiator, sources told Axios.
Between the lines: After Thune rejected Schumer’s offer, a group of senators quickly moved to restart their bipartisan talks to end the shutdown, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Zoom in: The Democratic offer includes adding the ACA tax credit extensions to a package of appropriations bills and a short-term spending bill…
Note…
The whole thing is complicated by the fact that Trump has no problem sticking to norm, rules or the law and Democrats are afraid Donald would simply do whatever HE wants after Congress funds government empoyee’s paycheck’s and maybe NOT Obamacare healthcare money to the states…
Trust and Trump do NOT belong in the same sentence these days…
