Big Apple Democrats turn-away from soiled but experienced former Governor for a Queens Socialist State Lawmaker …..
For Andrew Cuomo?
He could NOT get past HIS past in a Democratic Party that IS NOT his flavor anymore….
Mamdani IS NOW the person to beat in majority Democratic New York City come November….
This DOES have a message for National Democrats who have been told to move to the centre of the political spectrum ….
Mamdani WILL have to jettison a lot of his promises for ‘free’ stuff….
But?
The message for the Democratic Party from its voters IS unmistakable….
They DO want CHANGE…..
They do NOT want old school Democrats who ARE practical…
They still embrace the ‘Dream’ for the low and middle class….
They will get it in the Big Apple…
In 2028?
We’ll See….
Zohran Mamdani, a little-known state lawmaker whose progressive economic platform electrified younger voters, surged into the lead in the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City, putting him on the verge of a stunning upset.
Former Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, who had led the race for months, conceded the primary and congratulated Mr. Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist, in remarks after 10 p.m. He notably did not promise to continue his campaign in November, despite securing a third-party ballot line.
“Tonight was not our night,” a deflated-looking Mr. Cuomo, 67, told supporters. He added, of Mr. Mamdani: “Tonight is his night. He deserved it. He won.”
Unless one candidate receives more than 50 percent of first-choice votes in the initial count under the city’s ranked-choice voting system, counting will continue next week.
At a moment when Democrats are searching for an answer to President Trump, Mr. Mamdani ran on an unabashedly progressive agenda, promising to make buses free, freeze the rent on rent-stabilized apartments and raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers. His promise of generational change appears to have resonated with large numbers of voters.
The Democratic nominee will become the front-runner in the general election to lead a city at an inflection point and gain a prominent national platform as his party tries to find a path back to power. New York is confronting a cost-of-living crisis and Mr. Trump’s increasingly aggressive tactics to impose his agenda on immigration and transportation, issues that dominated the race.
The fall campaign could be unusually competitive. Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, skipped the primary to seek a second term as an independent. Curtis Sliwa, the 2021 Republican nominee, secured his party’s nomination without a primary, and Jim Walden, a lawyer, is running as an independent…..
Note…
This Dog IS old school and does NOT live IN New York City….
I would have voted FOR Cuomo holding my nose….
The former Governor IS a proven executive , who is a take –no-prisoner’s guy….
He served New York State Well….
But?
His personal foible’s left him damaged ….
And?
The Demographic’s of ‘The City’ ARE slipping away from White males….
Oh?…. and the polls generally got this one wrong…..
image…New York mayoral candidate, State Rep. Zohran Mamdani (D-NY) and NYC Comptroller and Mayoral Candidate Brad Lander speak with members of the press as they greet voters on Broadway on June 24, 2025 in New York City. Getty
Democrats have a growing MAGA problem of their own. Both parties are failing America. There is going to be an interesting general election in NYC. I think the panicking over Mamdani will really only begin now. There will be other options on the ballot.
Also, how is Mamdani “upstate?”
My bad….
He’s a Queens NY State rep….
Correction made ….
Ah?
Wait till the GOPer’s start on the guy being born in Uganda to Indain parents….
Has NOTHING to do with who he is now…
Came to New York when he was 7……
Wiki….
NO SHIT CG…..
It’s the people’s choice….
It’s kinda irrational….
Nobody should care that he was born in Uganda or is Muslim. That should be irrelevant.
What is relevant is that he is only 33 years old, has no record to speak of whatsoever, and has taken absolutely extreme political positions.
Ok….
Remember you wrote THAT…..
GOPer’s practice Racial Politics EVERY DAY….
Later…..
There was a huge anti-Cuomo vote that will not be the animus in a general election.
We certainly should not forget the fact that he is basically an unrepentant sexual assaulter (like someone else from NYC we know) but it turns out he had a horrible record as Governor considering his handling of the Covid pandemic and all the nursing home deaths that never should have happened and we learned later that he tried to cover up.
Cuomo was unworthy for any office in every way. I said here the day he resigned that he would never be elected to anything ever again.
Mamdani though is a David Duke level extremist who should be rejected by all sensible members of his party in November. Those people do not even need to vote for a Republican to reject him.
Cuomo WAS a bricks and mortor guy who DID DO GOOD things for my state…..
Wait….
The handwringing will come about Cuomo losing….
Cuomo was incapable of showing any remorse for his past actions. His ego is about as big as Trump’s.
People were turned off by him and endorsements by the likes of Jim Clyburn and especially Bill Clinton made things worse for him.
As I write in this post…..
In order to govern?
Mamdani IS gonna have a LOT of his lefty stuff…..
He IS CLEARLY on to something and we’ll see how it goes….
I repeat….
I do NOT live in NYC….
And I would have voted for Cuomo dirt and all….
The same media that pushed the horse race and got what thye wanted will in all likelihood turn on Zohan….
You’re probably right absent a HIGE Buyer remorse ?
Andrew Cuomo IS DONE in politics…
Democrats don’t likle soiled Laundry like GOPer’s do….
Where’s DSD?
He should be happy with this…..
It’s all on tape. He literally came out for eliminating the police. Not just defunding but eliminating.
He told people to not vote for Kamala Harris when she ran against Donald Trump.
On October 8, 2023, he said the murders and rapes and kidnappings of Israelis were the fault of Israel.
He he said he supports “globalizing the Intifada.”
How many national Democrats, especially those who want to run for President are going to embrace him politically?
If he becomes Mayor, he will be featured in every Republican midterm ad in the country in 2026.
The demographics may be slipping away from white people (demographics between males and females pretty much stay consistent so I don’t see why you had to say male in that context), but I think young white people were easily the largest share of Mamdani’s support.
In November, he is going to struggle with black voters and is going to struggle with Jewish voters. There are going to be twists and turns in this general election campaign that will not immediately be present in the earliest polls.
The biggest question now is if Cuomo is delusional enough to try to keep running in November on his own ballot line. In a five-way race, with four Democrats, NYC might even get Curtis Sliwa.
CG?
NYC IS turning Browner….
Look at the down ballot winner’s….
Talk to some people IN NYC…..
Demographics IS a factor…..
Not just that though….
Ok….
Good talking to ya CG…..
I’m out….
He won’t be MY mayor….
I have to live with LI GOPer’s…..
Lucky me, eh?
NOT….
If he becomes Mayor of NYC, it is going to have a tremendously bad impact on the entire metro area, including LI. There would be implications for the state and the country.
I don’t live there either obviously, but I hope that this Jim Walden guy can at least get a fair look from people. All of the other options are horrible.
If not, then Eric Adams, the crook, is going to have to be the one for many.
Not true on the NYC metro area….
LI and Upstate ARE GOPer political places….
Adams is done….
People who OWN things and don’t rent….
Voters in the suburbs will continue to vote Republican
Mamdani WILL help the influx on East Indians across Long Island and parts of NYC….
You have NO idea how diverse the NYC Metro area HAS become….
Browner as in South Asian or Hispanic? I think Mamdani is going to struggle among African-Americans and many older Latinos as well as culturally conservative Asian voters.
The fact that Election Day fell in the middle of a heat wave kept a lot of people at home. Quite a difference from Chicago when Mayoral primaries have been held during blizzards or during brutal cold weather.
CG?
Miller IS trying to ‘lighten UP’ America in planin sight…..
It won’t work……
Harris, Mamdani, AOC, even Rubio…..
And YES the temp being 100 dgerees didn’t help…
But this is actually no fluke….
In a turn about in the last 6 months….
The edge people vote …
The old timers seem to be tired and turned off by politics…
They, we, cannot be counted on
NOT a good look for Democrats
post in moderation
Tish James is making a complete fool out of herself right now introducing Mamdani.
A lot of Democrats are simply going to fall in line behind him because he has a D next to his name. No different than all the gutless Republicans who capitulated to Trump simply because it was the easiest path.
Tish James is NOT stupid….
Hanging with Mamdani helps her in serval ways….
She does have to battle with a Mayor Cuomo, who she’s bveen beating on …
She gets tight WITH the Divrese Mamdani bloc….
And she just could reconsider and run for Governor?
CG?
Check this WashPost link which seems to confirm my view that Cuomo carried the ‘OUTER’ less diverse parts of city and Mamdani carried the ‘Rental and apartment area’s’ in the inner city….
Sabato IS correct….
Mamdani’s base IS a-typical for the nation and even Most of New York State….
Props to Mamdani…..
He’s got a rough path ahead of him….
The NY Post ALSO raises doubts about Mamdani….Of Course….
Adams is already throwing at Mamadani….
I do not think you have any real comprehension of what is discussed here or what you read.
Mamdani’s base was upscale white people in Manhattan, aka the people who have apartments. His share of the primary vote was far whiter than Cuomo’s.
Putting aside conservative leading Staten Island, I am pretty sure that Manhattan is a good deal whiter than Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx.
Am I wrong? I doubt it.
Ok…..
On me NOT KNOWING where Mamdani got his vote…..
Zohan promised’FREE’ Stuff?
WTF PAYS for Free stuff?
People who OWN property and pay taxes!
If u check the linked maps?
Like i SAID?
The outer boroughs where people PAY TAXES voted for Adams last time and CUOMO THIS TIME….
As Sabato points out……
This is NOT GOOD for a general election…:::
Right now, I think Luigi Mangione would have gotten more votes than Andrew Cuomo in an NYC Dem primary.
For a racial and ethnic breakdown by borough, see:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_and_ethnicity_in_New_York_City#Diversity_of_New_York_City's_boroughs
Manhattan and Staten Island have white majorities (including Hispanics who classify themselves as white) but the Outer Boroughs do not.
Mandani did well in large parts of Brooklyn and even Queens as well as in Manhattan.
Here (in summary) is the NY Times’ breakdown
Precincts by racial majority
All precincts
Mamdani +7
White
Mamdani +5
Black
Cuomo +18
Hispanic
Mamdani +6
Asian
Mamdani +15
By median income
Lower income
Cuomo +13
Middle income
Mamdani +10
Higher income
Mamdani +13
So Mandani won a plurality in every group save Blacks and lower-incone voters,
There seems to be a greater tendency to vote for Mandani over Cuomo among whites, but also Hispanics and Asians, and among middle- and upper-income primary voters, but not lower-class ones.
For a detailed map, see (I hope I remember the XML coding):
For a Wash. Post analysis in prose, see:
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/how-new-york-city-neighborhoods-voted-in-the-democratic-mayoral-primary/ar-AA1HoySm
Note that Mandani’s strongest support among Democratic primary votes is not among whites, but among his fellow Asian-Americans.
Indeed DSD on the East Asian support
That’s probably not really that significant portion of a primary electorate.
I do think there will be many Chinese-Americans and others in places like Queens who most certainly are going to have a hard time supporting an avowed socialist. Same goes for many Latin Americans who are refugees from communist or socialist dictatorships.
Yup CG…..
Out of the box he’s got problems….
Gonna be an interesting next few months…
Wikipedia (citing the Census) say that 1 of every 8 New Yorkers identifies his or her ancestry or culture as Asian. This would be a powerful voting bloc were not its constituents so diverse.
It’s understandable that Indochinese. Korean and Chinese Americans would tend to favour the GOP (at least when it was still anti-Communist), while other Asian groups would lean Democratic (in California, it was Japanese and Filipino Americans).
Diversity steps aside to economic concerns I’d think?
What about public safety concerns?
Democrats thought they were past “defund the police.” Mamdani is Defund the Police on steroids.
Ok……
Do NOT count OUT a second Cuomo run folks
There have been people who run as popular Independents who have won in the past, eh?
Completely counting out Cuomo. You were the one claiming for months and months and right up until tomorrow that he was going to easily win.
I was skeptical on that right from the start but am trying not to hold that over you.
“until yesterday..”
It’s been a long day and a long week. Signing off for now..
Yes I wuz
I was wrong on yesterday’s vote
The NY Times break down has Black and Lower class voters strong for Cuomo
They will have to find someone else to support..,,,
With only 10% of voters?
They ain’t gonna vote Republican
Could be a opportunity for some Independent, especially if other blocs move amongst the 90% that didn’t vote…
I’m just running this out
But wait and watch
The media IS going to go to the same place if Mamdani seems too hard to support
Much of that Cuomo vote will go to Eric Adams.
Unless those people find some integrity and vote for Jim Walden, but it seems like New Yorkers need a freak show, so Adams will probably wind up being the main alternative
Disagree……
Black voters have left Adams
And the maps show Cuomo’s vote came from Adams footprint…..
Just guessing?
Could Cuomo get MORE of the Adams votes to be cast?
Or is Cuomo done like u think?
Could Mamdani scare enough people?
Anyway’s good having some actual comments from our ‘exclusive’ crew here
Trump Calls Mamdani a ‘Communist’
President Trump called New York City Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani “a communist,” and said the Big Apple will become “a communistic city” if he is elected mayor in November, CNBC reports.
Said Trump: “I can’t believe that’s happening. That’s a terrible thing for our country, by the way.”
I’m
Going to
Disagree DSD…….
The outer boroughs AGAIN
Own property
If you check the LINKED MAP’s
The vote went FOR Cuomo
Both candidates got diverse support
That’s my read
The people who own houses in the outer boroughs are in many cases far less affluent than the people who rent apartments in parts of Manhattan.
I think this is sorta NYC 101.
You miss basic POLITICAL economics CG….
AGAIN……
‘Free’ stuff HAS TO be PAID FOR….
Real Estate TAXES……
Something Rich may not feel
But HAVE turned to Trump for Relief
THIS. Is why Bernie was never looked at seriously for President
Gee, who knew I might find those things problematic?
I’ve only been opposing Democrats since my childhood.
I guess I learned today to not trust politicians promising “free stuff.”
The NY Times’s maps is at:
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2025/06/24/us/elections/nyc-mayor-primary-results-precinct-map.html
Bill Kristol and Tim Miller on The Bulwark had a pretty reasoned response to Mamdani winning the primary.
Keistol–a Jewish Never Trump conservative said he would not have voted for Mamdani but can understand why he got the support he did.
CG comparing him to David Duke is ridiculous.
Mamdani won because of anti-Cuomo backlash. There are still other fundamental problems among the D base though. I can understand it too. Hopefully, plenty of Democrats, which I believe Kristol now counts himself among, will put country first and reject such an extremist.
David Duke tried to put a smiling face on his extremism also. I think the comparison is apt in political terms in regards to the specific races. I do not think Mamdani is a terrorist but he has stated that Israel is to blame for the October 7th attacks and refused to condemn Hamas. He has said the Jewish State of Israel should not exist. He has excused the phrase “globalize the Intifada” which, whether he realizes it or not, and it is a huge problem if he does not, is a call for Jews to be murdered inside the United States. How does one get any more extreme than that?
He has said he will arrest Netanyahu when the Israeli PM comes to New York. Of course saying that is a ridiculous farce that he does not really mean, but he is openly claiming he would violate the U.S. Constitution he would take an oath to in order to target someone he dislikes. One does not have to like or agree with Netanyahu to see the danger in such rhetoric.
and I have compared Trump to Duke since 2015
Scott?
If Mamdani actually gets the job?
He WILL HAVE TO Slide to the middle
People might have thought Mayor Brandon Johnson would in Chicago. He disagreed. Now, he has 7 percent job approval according to the most recent poll.
And Brandon Johnson is well to the right of Mamdani.
Socialism means sharing what wealth the rich have with EVERYONE..,,.
Even though America HAS social programs?
People only go so far
Throughout world history, socialism has caused unbelievable misery and suffering.
As would be expected, Trump posted a screed against Mamadani.
However, he totally surprised me by not taking the opportunity to coin the nickname “Madmani.” He did not even bother to give him a nickname.
This is concerning. At 79, Trump has clearly lost his mental sharpness. Maybe someone else at the White House is running the auto Truth Social
Trump, I think, would have been far more caustic had Gov. Cuomo won. There must be some very sore spots left over from when the two took very different tacks in 2020 over the Pandemic. For Trump, all such encounters turn personal, so his animus would have been far greater than for the abstract and distant Mahdani.
Plus, any friction Trump had with Gov. Mario Cuomo when Trump was in NY real estate would of course carried over to his reflexive approach to Mario’s sons.
I don’t really agree on that. Frankly. Trump and Andrew Cuomo have a lot in common. It was not long ago that Cuomo was saying that Trump was being treated unfairly in the legal system and especially by Tish James. In the past, Trump spoke about how they got along in office. Both Trump and Cuomo have a lot of Covid deaths on their hands due to their horrific mismanagement.
Now, in regards to Mamdani, this is absolute political gold for Republicans, and especially if he wins in November. They will make him the face of the D party in the midterms. It’s a complete lifeline for them. Democrats have to not fall into this trap any more than they already have. No wonder Schumer had to go to the hospital briefly today.
It is worth nothing that there has only been one U.S. Senator ever elected thus far who has claimed a religion other than Christianity or Judaism. That is Mazie Hirono of Hawai’i, who is Buddhist. Next year, I think Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois might become the first Hindu Senator. (Good chance I might vote for him in a D primary as the least objectionable option.)
There is also a Hindu American who is likely to be nominated for Governor next year in another state. America has never had a non Christian/non Jewish Governor. I think one day it will happen and that will be a perfectly fine thing. However, I do not think that first one will be someone who has the personality of Vivek Ramaswamy.
Vivek likely to be a real test…
Per what was said on CNN, only 10 percent of registered NYC voters voted for Mamdani in this primary.
There might be some hope.
It would be good if some organization polled on the general election with all these ballot options
1. Mamdani vs Sliwa
2. Mamdani vs. Walden
3. Mamdani vs. Adams
4. Mamdani vs Sliwa vs. Walden vs. Adams
5. Mamdana vs Sliwa vs Walden vs. Adams vs Cuomo
6. Mamdandi vs. Sliwa vs. Adams
7. Mamdani vs. Sliwa vs. Walden
You forgot Mamdani vs Cuomo…:
That would be sort of pointless. The others are never going to drop out to give Cuomo a 1 on 1 chance. He already had that.
If Cuomo tries to run in November (and I doubt he will), it will only divide the anti-Mamdani vote and thus help him.
I kinda figured that was the case on the size of the vote…..
Again?
We have a few months to see if Mamdani actually has a serious chance
Of course he has a serious chance. He is the Dem nominee and has an extremely devoted base. Some might even call him cultish.
It is his race to lose, and that might also happen. Whomever the main opponent winds up being will have to run an extremely negative campaign against him. Most likely, they will not have the hypocritical baggage of Cuomo, even Adams, though definitely a flawed option also.
Zohran Mamdani Easily Won in Final Tally
“Zohran Mamdani appeared to easily secure victory in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary Tuesday, defeating Andrew Cuomo 56 percent to 44 percent after ranked choice voting results were released by the New York City Board of Elections,” Politico reports.
