President Trump seems to have two opposing messages about the economy.

Anything good should be credited to him. Anything bad is Joe Biden’s fault.

As the Commerce Department reported Wednesday that the U.S. economy had contracted during the first three months of the year, President Trump tried to change the narrative by detailing recent domestic investments and blaming President Biden for the economic woes.

“We’re celebrating the most successful first 100 days of any administration in American history,” Mr. Trump declared in a 40-minute speech on the economy at the White House.

He did not mention that the stock market has endured its worst start to a presidency since Gerald R. Ford. He later acknowledged the weak economic data, adding: “This is Biden’s economy, because we took over on Jan. 20. And I think you have to give us a little bit of time to get moving.”

The decline in U.S. gross domestic product in the opening quarter of the year came as a striking reversal from robust growth in the final three months of 2024, which came under Mr. Biden but, in part, after Mr. Trump’s election. Mr. Trump took credit for the economy “really heating up after the election,” even as he said the recent decline was Mr. Biden’s fault.

The contraction appeared to reflect the costs of Mr. Trump’s chaotic off-and-on approach to steep tariffs, which have roiled financial markets and alarmed consumers and businesses. Mr. Trump on Wednesday called them “intelligently used tariffs.” Some economists say they will cause a recession.

The S&P 500 had not fallen more in the first 100 days of a presidential term since 1974, when President Ford replaced Richard M. Nixon during a recession and rising inflation. The contraction of the broader U.S. economy reported Wednesday — at a 0.3 percent annual rate, according to the Commerce Department — was the first drop in a quarter in three years.

“This is Biden’s economy,” Mr. Trump said, more than once.

He said companies with representatives in attendance had collectively unveiled more than $2 trillion in recent investments. He urged them to make “beautiful” microchips in the United States. (Last month, Mr. Trump attacked the CHIPS Act, a bipartisan lawpassed during the Biden administration to wean the United States off its reliance on Asia for semiconductors, saying it was a “horrible thing” and urging lawmakers to scrap it.)

Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York, the Democratic minority leader, said the economic slowdown had little to do with Mr. Biden.

“This is not Joe Biden’s economy, Donald,” Mr. Jeffries, flanked by Democrats, said in a speech at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday. “It is your economy. It is the Trump economy.”

Cris deRitis, deputy chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, said that “it’s hard to say when one president’s effects end and the other one’s begin.” And most economists were expecting some slowing in the economy at the start of the year, he added.

Still, the weakness in the economic report on Wednesday was heavily driven by an increase in imports as consumers and retailers raced to scoop up products before new tariffs took effect.

“I struggle to see how that was induced by the Biden administration,” Mr. deRitis said. “Clearly households and businesses are responding to the tariffs, or even the announcement of the tariffs.”…..

        • I do not claim that enough Republican Senators would vote against his confirmation, but what you have here is basically a public demotion of someone after only a short time on the job, for another role, only this one requires Senate confirmation.

          It really makes no sense, but few things do these days.

  9. Republicans have given up trying to steal a seat on the North Carolina Supreme Court Court .

    A Federal Judge, appointed by Trump ,finally put an end to the attempted theft.Having lost by over 700 votes ( even with a recount) ,the MAGA party essentially tried to change the election laws after the election and disqualify thousands of votes.

  11. Trump is apparently considering naming Fox News comedian Jeanine Pirro as the new US Attorney (interim )to succeed Right wing nut Ed Martin.

    After reading of Martins antics I am flabbergasted that he is still allowed to practice law.Even here in S.C. where essentially anything goes, I have seen many attorneys disbarred for only doing like 10% of what this kook has done.

  13. Former Missouri Governor and 4 term.US Senator Kit Bond has died at the age of 86.

    Bond was a pretty mainstream conservative Republican and with his occasional to maybe frequent intake of scotch and cigars he was quite different than the Governor who succeeded him at the end of his second non consecutive term–teetotaler John Ashcroft.

    A friend of mine interned in DC for Sen Bond in the mid 90s and spoke of him accidentally setting his pants on fire from his cigar ash.

    An interesting character and far preferable to our current Show Me State US Senators.

    “A federal grand jury indicted Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan on May 13 on charges that she tried to assist an undocumented immigrant escape arrest from her courtroom last month, putting her at the center of the growing dispute between President Donald Trump and the judiciary,” the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports….

    How far are they gonna take this?….
    The judge wasn’t too smart….

    In response to myself and CG calling for Bidens withdrawal after it became obvious to anyone with any objectivity whatsoever that he was in no way able to mount a successful campaign for reelection ,much less serve for four more years as President.

    James later lied and claimed that his boisterous statement above only meant that he was repeating what Biden himself believed not what he( James) thought.

        • The bottom line was that he insisted, and continued to insist until that final Sunday that Biden would be stronger against Trump than Harris. Apparently, the Bidens themselves and others in their most inner circle believed the same thing.

          It was totally delusional. Biden thoroughly screwed his party by virtue of every single day he was a candidate for reelection as it was. Had he remained in the race, instead of Harris, Democrats would have lost probably 4 more Senate seats and 20 more House seats and any attempts to comeback in 2026 would be far more difficult.

          Democrats need to admit they messed up on Biden and were wrong before a lot of American people will trust them to “move on.” One day, Republicans will probably have to say the same about Trump.

  19. So now we have 84 year old SC Cong. Jim Clyburn on Jake Tappers show saying Biden was fit to serve four more years as President.

    Of course Clyburn is self interested as he is catching flack down here in S.C. about running again at his age.Indeed there is a host of Black politicians itching to run for this seat( district is over 60% Black) .

    I ,as an old White guy myself ,am tired of these old bastards littering the political landscape .Put age limits on all public offices.72 years seems about right.

When I made one in 2023 just to read Tweets, I never expected to offering thoughts myself, which I started doing about a year ago and thus I have no idea what the password was that I used and I cannot re-set it because I probably did not use a real email address to set it up.

  21. I am sorry to hear the news that Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. Best wishes.

    This will not stop Donald Trump from attacking him.

      • He had the best care available when he was President. Perhaps the best care of anyone on the planet. It is scary to think that this condition could have gotten this bad this fast. A presumably normal PSA level in his bloodwork in 2024 and presumably no tremendously abnormal symptoms to a Gleason score of 9 the next year? That should scare everyone. For one thing alone, was he really only getting his blood work done annually?

        This is very sad for him and his family and some truly awful people are going to make a lot of horrible claims. It feels wrong to even entertain the idea that there may be some legitimate questions involved. I think there may be some things that are never known about this.
