Dressed in a dark pullover and pants, with his hair and beard graying, Combs, 55, struck a more gentle and unimposing appearance than the sharp and polished image he normally maintains in public.
He has been detained in a Brooklyn jail since his arrest in September and has pleaded not guilty to five criminal counts — including racketeering, prostitution and sex trafficking. He faces 15 years to life in prison if convicted on all counts.
The trial began Monday with attorneys and U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian preparing to question potential jurors. The trial is estimated to last eight weeks, Subramanian said, with opening statements scheduled to begin next Monday, May 12…

Combs’s lawyers have argued that all of the sexual acts cited by the government were consensual. They also claim that he is being unfairly prosecuted because of his race.
Inside the courtroom Monday, Combs wore reading glasses and appeared to check his image using the camera app on his laptop.
