European University’s look for American University scientists….

The universities’ efforts, which run parallel to national initiatives being floated in European capitals, seek to capitalize on the fear and uncertainty that have reigned among some American scientists in response to the Trump administration’s moves to reshape the country’s higher education sector….

European governments are also sensing an opportunity. On Thursday, the Dutch education minister instructed the national science research fund to open a grant for attracting the “top international talent,” alluding to the Trump administration’s efforts in indirect terms. “The geopolitical climate is changing, which is increasing the international mobility of scientists,” Minister Eppo Bruins wrote in a letter to parliament, warning that other European countries may be prompted to launch initiatives of their own. “I want the Netherlands to be at the forefront,” he said.

Olof Gill, a spokesman for the European Commission, said in a statement Monday that “these scenarios present an opportunity for Europe.”…

So far, the number of new opportunities targeting U.S. scientists is relatively small, compared with the thousands of scientists affected by the Trump administration’s policies. Academic salaries in Europe also tend to be lower than those in the U.S….
