Here’s what else to know
- Hezbollah will hold a public funeral procession for its slain leader, Hasan Nasrallah, on Feb. 23, the militant group’s new chief said in a televised address on Sunday. Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut in September, just days before Israel invaded Lebanon.
- The Israeli army confirmed it carried out an airstrike in Gaza on Sunday on what it said was a car trying to reach the north of the enclave along a route that was not approved in the ceasefire deal and therefore bypassed inspection points. Mohammed Shatali, a spokesman for al-Awda Hospital in Nuseirat, said five people were hospitalized with shrapnel injuries, including one child who later died.
- Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with senior Hamas officials in the Qatari capital Sunday. Hamas said its delegation pointed out Israel’s “procrastination” in implementing the deal’s humanitarian provisions, including the entry into Gaza of tents and prefabricated homes, as well as the rebuilding of hospitals. Fidan also met with the Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, who stressed the need for Israel and Hamas to continue implementing the ceasefire agreement.
- Former president Joe Biden welcomed the release of U.S.-Israeli citizen Keith Siegel from Hamas captivity on Saturday, during the fourth round of hostages-for-prisoners exchanges outlined in the Gaza ceasefire deal, and said he looks forward to the release of additional American hostages held by Hamas. “For more than a year, my team and I met with his family, including his wife Aviva who was once a hostage herself,” Biden tweeted. He said he looks forward to the release of additional American hostages held by Hamas.
- The Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt opened for the first time in eight months on Saturday, allowing for the medical evacuation of 34 children and three adults, according to the head of the World Health Organization. Israeli forces seized and closed the crossing in May.
