Israeli opposition leader urges government to secure captive release deal
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has reiterated his demand for a ceasefire deal after Hamas published a video showing one of the captives held in Gaza.
“The video we saw today must shock the country. Our hostages are dying in the tunnels every day,” Lapid wrote on X.
“In the cold, the humidity, the hunger and the despair. 456 days is an unimaginable time, we must make a deal. We must bring Leary back, everyone. Home.”

‘Largest weapons sales’ from the US to Israel
Also, guidance kits that could convert thousand-pound bombs into smart guided bombs, as well as the controversial bunker-buster bombs.
So, if this weapons sale is approved by Congress, it would still take quite a while for all of this hardware to reach Israel.
We’re expecting some to arrive this year and other [weapons] to arrive over the next few years, but of course, this is still pending congressional approval.
It’s notable that this is happening in the waning days of US President Joe Biden’s presidency….
An Alawite organization accused the Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS)-led interim Syrian government of failing to address instances of sectarian violence. The Alawite Islamic Forum in Syria released a statement on January 3 expressing its support for the interim Syrian government but argued that the interim government, though it has stated it seeks to respect all Syrians, has so far failed to back words with action. The group cited instances of sectarian-motivated attacks and killings in Homs, Hama, Latakia, Tartous, Damascus, and Daraa. HTS-led security forces have been conducting clearing operations targeting former regime members in these areas since December 28.
