Speaking to reporters outside Rideau Cottage, an official residence in Ottawa, Trudeau said that he intends to stay on as prime minister until his successor is chosen in a “robust” leadership race. He said that Governor General Mary Simon, who represents King Charles III in Canada as the country’s head of state, granted his request to prorogue or end the current session of Parliament until March 24 when a new leader is in place.
“As you all know, I’m a fighter. Every bone in my body has always told me to fight because I care deeply about Canadians,” said Trudeau, an amateur boxer, adding, “This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I am having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election.”…
