Seth Masket picks the biggest political story of the year:
“Democrats: In the seven weeks between the Trump/Biden presidential debate and the Democratic National Convention, the Democrats pushed their scandal-free, well-accomplished incumbent president off the ticket because they thought he would lose. That’s an amount of party power we don’t often see in the U.S. Yet it was not completely without precedent — similar things happened when Harry Truman and Lyndon Johnson declined to run for reelection in 1952 and 1968, respectively. In all three cases, the exact same thing happened: a replacement candidate almost certainly did better than the incumbent would have (possibly saving some congressional seats in the process) but still lost.”
“Republicans: In the seven weeks between Trump’s felony criminal conviction in a Manhattan courtroom and the Republican National Convention, the Republicans absolutely did not push their expected nominee off the ticket, instead doubling down in their support for him. This despite polling suggesting that some independents were moving away from Trump as a result of the conviction and they could lose the presidential race as a result. It nicely depicted the two very different attitudes across the parties about just what an electable candidate looks like and how important that trait is.”
…
“Justice Department lawyers who have angered President-elect Donald Trump and his allies are facing tough decisions about whether to stay in government—and how to best protect themselves from threats of retribution after Inauguration Day,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“Law firms say they have seen an unprecedented flood of résumés from department lawyers looking for the exits.”

100 years is a remarkable life.
I was thinking about this earlier today. I think he might not have wanted Trump to be the one to give his eulogy.
We can consider now the fact that the current U.S. President, is older than all former Presidents by almost fours years. The second oldest person alive to have been President is about to take the job again.

It’s insane thst we’ve only elected one President born after 1946.

CG?
Cept for Obama?
They ARE ALL OLD….
Scott P says
RIP President Carter.
I’m glad his funeral will be held while Biden is still President.
Harry Truman and Gerald Gord both passed on the 26th of December and now Jimmy Carter on the 29th.
jamesb says
Agreed Scott….
Trump would have NO respect for the Office let alone the man….
We’ll see if he’s pushed to do the right thing….

Jimmy Carter was the oldest of four siblings. All three of his younger siblings died of cancer in their 50s or early 60s. It is remarkable that he made it to 100, even when he had his own bout with cancer in his 90s.

Per the U.S. Code, all flags should still be flown at half-staff on January 20th, as it is within 30 days. Watch Trump do something about that on the day.

The only President I ever met.It was in 1975.A few of us decided to go to a local hotel to meet this former Governor of Georgia. He was standing with an aide( later I learned it was Jody Powell who became his press secretary.).There were about 30 or so people there. We talked for a few minutes. We all agreed he was a nice guy but President?
Come on we said.
Carter knew a lot more about politics than a bunch of South Carolina kids!

Great story Jack!
In 1991 when I was attending the Iniversity of Missouti Columbia Carter spoke at Stephens College which is also in Columbia, MO. I got to hear him speak to a crowd of maybe a couple hundred. Didn’t get to meet him though.

I have joined the ranks of people who was not yet born when someone no longer alive was serving as President. It has been 18 years since that last became the case for some and over 30 years for a larger group of people.
But to feel especially old, I am about to be older than the Vice President.

Very rare to find any of these still, so here is a P1 thread dated 1/26/09.

Illinois Jim was right the Blackhawks would win a Stanley Cup within five years (they won it the next year and two more within six years)
I was right that Mark Kirk would run for the Senate in Illinois in 2010 and win.
and the Ricketts Family buying the Cubs turned out to be a very good thing (although a lot of fans might not feel as strongly that way now)
It looks like james thought that Gillibrand would lose in a Senate primary.
