Joe Biden has gotten the shitheel for the economy….
Trump will have the healthcare spending dropped in their lap….
Trump will try to sell the idea that things are BETTER….
Will even his lemmings believe INCREASED healthcare bills?
Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans made the high cost of living a major focus of their campaigns in 2024. And for all of their vitriolic attacks on Democrats over issues like crime and immigration, it may have been their promise to reduce everyday prices that allowed them to win control of the White House and Congress.
But governing is harder than campaigning. The president-elect and other Republicans are likely to see this firsthand when their commitment to lower prices runs smack into their opposition to government spending on health care — and, no less important, to their antipathy toward so-called Obamacare.
It’s going to happen sometime in the next few months, or maybe even the next few weeks. A finding that the Congressional Budget Office released Thursday shows why.
The finding was about the cost of health insurance for people who buy private coverage through the Affordable Care Act, the landmark legislation that Democrats passed and then-President Barack Obama signed in 2010. The short version of CBO’s conclusion is that insurance for millions of Americans will get more expensive if the Republicans don’t act….
…
The effects of the bigger tax credits have been clear. With cheaper insurance at the marketplaces, enrollment has surged to record levels. But the extra subsidies are set to vanish after 2025. And while Democrats have called for extending them, it would be up to Trump and Republicans in Congress to do so.
That’s not the sort of thing they’re inclined to do ― although, with Thursday’s CBO finding, they have a new reason to think about it….
Scott P says
Comedian Bill Burr–who almost no one would call far left or an angry anti capitalisr–reacted to slain CEO Brian Thompson being lauded as a father and family man. His reply? So were a lot of gangsters.
AndThompson being involved in millions of dollars in an insider trading deal basically made him a gangster too..
jamesb says
No one should be shot in the back….
The law process was the way
And YES healthcare companies make profits on denying people coverage
CG says
That is such a red herring. Healthcare companies make profits by providing coverage. if they denied all coverage, there would be no money to be made.
Are people going to support going after doctors next because doctors also work for profit?
Again though, the main point, is that none of this should even be factored into any sort of consideration in regards to a murder. There are a lot of people online who really should be ashamed of themselves for losing the point of that.
jamesb says
LOT OF PEOPLE ARE pissed At healthcare companies it seems….
LOTS
Unitedhealthcare made a reported $3000 Billion profit…….
THAT doesn’t endear them to people paying them High premiums…
The anger IS THERE
And GOPer’s want CUT MORE coverage!
CG says
People being pissed at healthcare companies should have absolutely nothing to do with the facts of this murder.
If something happened to someone in your family because someone was “pissed” at what they think they might have done, it would be inexcusable and horrible.
You do not really know anything about the man who was killed or what kind of person he was. People should just shut up about trying to smear a murder victim.
CG says
There is nothing to suggest that Brian Thompson was involved in “insider trading” beyond internet claims. He certainly was not convicted of any crime or charged with any crime related to that. As far as we know, his assassination had nothing to do with “insider trading.”
Nonetheless, all of that is completely irrelevant. He was an innocent victim of a murder. Anybody who thinks that his killing was somehow justified or excusable or worthy of “sending a message” is showing that they are not a very good person and should really take a look at their own life.
Mangione should go through the legal process and if charged for murder and found guilty, never see a minute of freedom again.
Scott P says
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/unitedhealthcare-brian-thompson-insider-trading-lawsuit_n_6751a2abe4b01129dffa8789
Scott P says
Thompson was clearly accused of insider trading. Being a shady businessman whose company made profits off of other people being denied health care certainly did not warrant his death though.
So if Mangione is convicted I’m fine with him paying the price for his crime.
Apparently Mangione was an Elon Musk fan so who knows what water that holds these days.
jamesb says
Thanks Scott on the 411 on Thompson
CG says
This is why nobody wants to comment here.
jamesb says
He, he, he
Blame it on the messenger, eh?
I’ll keep doing this for the 200-300 people who see this place every day here and across the planet
Scott P says
Do you get a lot of comments on your Political Prognostications site?
jamesb says
Yea
How many‘visits’ do ya get ?
CG says
You do not get “visits.” You got bots. This has been explained to you time and time again.
There are maybe 10 humans at most who visit this site.
jamesb says
Actually I clean the ‘bots’ out every day…..
About 300 every day more or less…
I’m on Twitter and Bluesky
CG says
Different kind of “bots.” There are online algorithms including on places like Twitter that makes it appear you are getting “views.” They are not humans.
If there were actual humans that were reading, you would have gotten at least one new commenter in the past 9 years or so. At least one. Unless, they are trying to comment, and you are just not approving them.
jamesb says
CG ?
So the numbers reported by the BIG political blogs are not all that either?
You make me feel SO MUCH BETTER!
CG says
I don’t ask for them. But when people do try to leave comments, such as how the Texan does constantly accusing a relative of james of misconduct related to healthcare and making all sorts of unverified claims about him and his family, I do not allow those comments to be posted there.
Here, james will thank you for the 411.
jamesb says
Thank You cG
Garbage comes with posting
So does moderation
And i thank everyone for their support and patience here for the last 15 years….
CG says
He shouldn’t have been shot anywhere. Why is this distinction of “in the back” matter? I am not sure if you are trying to be clever and suggesting he could have been shot somewhere else or by some other entity. Maybe not.
All of this claims being made about Thompson out there (and in a very minimal sense here since its just two people saying it) is absolute garbage.
None of us would have heard of Thompson if he were not the victim of a high profile murder. Now, because he was murdered, people want to dig and reach and search for something to attack him on because they have a broader political agenda.
It is just a very damning statement about our society. I see no difference between those people and those who dug to attack George Floyd (who wasn’t an “altar boy”) after his death, because they wanted to make a broader political point.
jamesb says
CG?
There IS an ongoing civil suit brought by Fire Department pension fund against Thompson and others
The Feds are reportedly also investigating this
Bless the Guy
He was no altar boy
CG says
What is even the point of any of that? We do not know what he did or did not do in his business life or his personal life. Nobody should be killed because they might not be an “altar boy.”
You people sound exactly like the MAGA folks who think George Floyd had it coming.
CG says
I am sure your online stalker would have a lot to say to about who may or may not be an “altar boy” and what they might “deserve.”
People need to get a grip. There is zero justification for excusing any aspect of the crime against Thompson and anything related to him, whether true or not, and based on the nature of the internet, much of is is probably false, is absolutely irrelevant to the fact that he was brutally killed. Obviously, all these claims about his supposed business lire or his private life would not be remotely admissible in a murder trial.
jamesb says
Us people see what seems to be the worse part of capitalism….
We see people suffering because these companies make BILLIONS off the sick and suffering….
There would be no anger if things weren’t so inequitable
CG says
So, now you are anti-capitalist.
Yeah, that’s a surefire way for Democrats to win elections again.
Scott P says
Are you a “capitalist” CG? What means of production do you control?
Scott P says
All James said was that insurance companies making obscene profits off of denying claims is the “worse part of capitalism”.
Do you think it’s the best part?
James comment is hardly controversial and your attempt to claim it is Marxist is laughable.
CG says
I don’t know what qualifies as an “obscene profit.” There are probably a lot of people in all sorts of lines of work who would then make “obscene profits.”
i also do not understand why the people who are upset at healthcare CEOs are not angry at doctors. Do doctors work for free? Are they also not profiting. Would it be “understandable” if someone violently went after a doctor who misdiagnosed someone that led to a death?”
The fact is that while some health care claims will be denied, whether fairly or unfairly, the vast majority of claims are approved. Our healthcare system, for all its problems, is the envy of the world. There have long been alternative free-market approaches that would give more power to consumers and patients but those things have been political footballs.
Whatever one thinks about the “worst aspects of capitalism”, the “w0rst aspects of socialism” are far far far worse, especially as it would relate to healthcare.
CG says
The point I am trying to make is that a healthcare CEO or an insurance company will make a profit not because they have denied coverage in some cases but because they PROVIDE coverage.
This is simple economics and basic common sense.
jamesb says
CG?
Almost $400 Billion PROFIT IS A LOT of damn Money ‼️
CG says
For one person? One person makes that?
Does that mean they should get shot in the leg to send a message?
What is your point?
jamesb says
Insurance companies TELL doctors what to DO…..
They ain’t doctors
They are ‘bean’ counters
CG says
You should have supported the free market healthcare reforms, such as health savings accounts, that Republicans wanted to make years ago before the party was taken over by someone who has expressed his own preference for European style socialized medicine.
jamesb says
We HAVE discussed Social medicine here back in past…..
The problem we agreed was that Americans want choice
Not mandated, long waiting social medicine services
Scott P says
Health savings accounts are great to cover copay if you have high deductible insurance coverage. But there’s no way one can “save” for a 100k hospital stay. Single payer is what we need.
jamesb says
Shit!
Insurance companies tell hospitals what to do and they lobby Congress
CG?
There only friends are their stock holders and bosses
CG says
Why are doctors so rich?
What is your alternative to private health insurance for those who wish to own it?
Are you now a supporter of the Bernie Sanders Single Payer plan? In the past you said you were not and that “Bernie wasn’t a Democrat.”
Should private insurance be outlawed in America? Will this help Democrats win more voters?
jamesb says
Nope…….
I have said I don’t support Bernie’s push for socializing the entire US HEALTHCARE system
And that has no chance
jamesb says
We ALL AGREE on being against the Thompson shooting…..
We also understand why it happened
CG says
It is already a debate that has been held for a long time The facts remain that people from all over the world come to America for health care and treatment because we have the best system.
Under a purely run government program, all sorts of people would not only be denied coverage, but denied care. There would be serious problems with rationing and delivering.
We ought to continue to debate how to make health care more accessible and more affordable. Turning things over to the government, and not even allowing people to have a choice, is exactly the wrong thing to do.
In the meantime, I do not want to see any American shot because someone has a political agenda, whether they are on the left, right, or center. I will feel very badly on a personal level for anybody who would be the victim of that sort of terrorism.
CG says
Why did the shooting happen? Assuming the manifesto and social media posts of the suspects are accurate, it is because the killer was a terrorist. Terrorists are evil. End of story.
Zero justification. Zero “understanding.” Throw the book at him. It is too bad NY does not have a death penalty
jamesb says
Injustices occur that push people to take violent actions…..
That simple
jamesb says
And ‘eye for an eye’, eh?
Oh I could go somewhere with that….
CG says
“Facing a lawsuit”, especially a civil one, is not indicative of any sort of guilt. There is a legal system in America for a reason. There is no indication that Thompson himself was a target of the Justice Department. Comparisons to mob bosses or “gangsters” is just vile.
This lawsuit or allegations of “insider trading” have absolutely nothing to do with the motive of the murder per what we are learning today after the arrest of the subject. Upon research, that theory appeared to be the basis of Bill Burr’s (who is apparently some sort of MAGA favorite) comedy bit that you took literally. It’s ridiculous, especially now that the suspect has been arrested with a manifesto.
Regardless, there is never an excuse for someone to murder another human being or to find some sort of karmic justice or humor in it. It is completely wrong to be as happy about this as you appear to be.
A suspect is in custody and it appears he wanted everyone to know he did it and perhaps was planning on more killing. He was a rich kid with from a privileged background who has degrees from an Ivy League school. Somehow, he became radicalized in his politics into some sort of mixture of a socialist Bernie Bro and a populist Tucker Carlson type. There is a very thin line at times between left and right when it comes to this sort of crazy.
Apparently, he is proud of what he did and believed that people in corporations “had it coming.” This is a very disturbing thing that people on the far left and far right both believe and anybody giving it or him an ounce of sympathy.
I find no difference between the people online who think that Luigi Mangione is some sort of hero and the people who think Derek Chauvin is some sort of hero or that the victims they murdered somehow “had it coming.”
CG says
There is a time and place for debates over healthcare policy. insurance reform/regulation, etc.
None of that should have an iota of relevance though to a murder. Smearing a murder victim based on a political ideology is beyond distasteful.
I think all of us have suffered frustration with insurance companies regarding health coverage, as well as with other forms of insurance companies.
What might be forgotten is that if we had no private health insurance in America and everything was run by the government, there sure would be far more procedures, operations, etc that would be denied than is currently the case.
jamesb says
I agree that the man should NOT HAVE been shot in the back
It solves nothing
Scott P says
The “time and place” for debating reforms to our flawed system of health care payment is right fucking now.
That is trie regardless of who was murdered last week.
CG says
People like you (and others have been far worse, but it is very clear what you have been doing on here) though lose all sorts of credibility in regards to those sorts of debates by the vile and tasteless remarks/jokes about the murder and seeming to excuse an act of terrorism.
If you think you can succeed in the arena of ideas than mocking and smearing a murder victim should not be necessary.
The issue you will run into is that the people who run your party want nothing to do with your desire for single payer. Sure, a lot of Democrats want it, but that sort of idea is going nowhere, especially after 2024. So, you may also find yourself very dissatisfied with your party.
Scott P says
I doubt Thompson’s wife and kids saw my “thoughts and copayers’ joke. And if they did? I don’t give a shit.
Not one time in your comments have you shown one ounce of compassion for those denied coverage.
Maybe you don’t know anyone who suffered due to their business practices. Lucky you.
CG says
I have compassion for a lot of people, including you, because you definitely do not seem well. I hope you can get the help you need.
Scott P says
Thanks. I have friends and a girlfriend. But I appreciate your concern.
CG says
Why did Biden run against single payer in 2020? Why did Harris change her mind on that issue? Would Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren beaten Trump either in 2020 or 2024?
The two of you seem to be saying Democrats need to move further to the left and embrace socialism and that will make them win elections again.
I have a different view, both on the substance and the politics.
Scott P says
Of course you want more trickle down economics
And you’ll get it under the GOP. You are just offended that the cut taxes for the rich policies will come wrapped in a deceptive populist wrapping paper and tied with a Christian Nationalist bow
CG says
Glad to hear Governor Josh Shapiro calling out the online ghouls.
CG says
Shapiro is going all in on a Sister Souljah moment, defending Thompson and saying the killer is not a hero.
It is sad that it has come to that for him in his party.
