There ARE some rough edges nevertheless…..
See below for Trump’s take from this….
Israeli forces on Friday opened fire on mourners at a funeral in the town of Khiam, according to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency. The agency also reported that four Israeli tanks entered a western neighborhood of the town.
The Israeli military told The Washington Post that its forces have been operating in the Khiam area and that the IDF will remain in southern Lebanon to defend Israel and its troops. Ori Gordin, the commanding officer of the IDF’s Northern Command, told troops Friday that “our role now is to enable and enforce” the cease-fire.
The Lebanese army said Israeli forces violated the cease-fire agreement, while the IDF said it was responding to violations of the deal by Hezbollah. Lt. Gen Herzi Halevi, the IDF chief of staff, said in a statement that “any deviation from this agreement will be enforced with fire.” A Hezbollah lawmaker also accused Israel of violating the cease-fire.
Israel has committed to withdraw ground troops from Lebanon within 60 days, with an increased presence from the Lebanese army and U.N. troops as a monitoring force in the country’s south. Hezbollah has agreed to keep its fighters out of an area mostly between Lebanon’s border with Israel and the Litani River, which runs roughly parallel to the border, between 1.8 and 18 miles north of it.
The IDF on Friday declared a 14-hour curfew starting at 5 p.m. local time, forbidding people from moving into or within the area south of the Litani River. “Those south of the Litani River must remain where they are,” Avichay Adraee, the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman, wrote on X.
Here are other key developments
- Four people were shot on a bus near an Israeli settlement in the West Bank, in an attack for which Hamas’s military wing, the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades, claimed responsibility. The IDF said the shooter “was neutralized at the scene.” Three of the shooting victims are in serious condition, and another is in moderate condition, said Magen David Adom, Israel’s rescue service. Four others were treated for glass shard injuries.
- Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem gave his first public speech since the cease-fire began, arguing that the militant group has gained from the conflict despite the deaths of many of its leaders. “We are in front of a huge victory, bigger than the victory of 2006 because of the duration, the ferocity of the battle and the huge sacrifices,” Qassem said.
- At least 44,363 people have been killed in Gaza during the war and 105,070 injured, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. At least 3,961 people have been killed and 16,520 injured in Lebanon, the country’s Health Ministry said. Neither agency distinguishes between civilians and combatants.
- Israel estimates that about 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, attack, including more than 300 soldiers. It says 379 soldiers have been killed in its military operation in Gaza and at least 77 in its war with Hezbollah.
President-elect Trump wants to see a ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza before he assumes office on Jan. 20, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) told Axios in an interview.
Why it matters: Getting a Gaza deal is one of President Biden’s top priorities during his last two months in office, but the lack of any clear progress in recent weeks suggests it might land on Trump’s plate.
- Israeli officials believe the Trump administration might take a different approach to Gaza, specifically on what the “day after” the war would look like.
- But Graham — who speaks with Trump frequently and advises him on foreign policy, especially on the Middle East — said Trump wants a deal to free the hostages and end the war as soon as possible, preferably before he takes office….
