Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon on Friday also killed 12 health workers, including the director of Dar Al-Amal University Hospital and at least five paramedics, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry.
Ali Allam, the hospital director, was killed in his home next to the hospital along with six of his colleagues, the ministry said, adding that Allam’s death was a “great loss” and that he was “known for his closeness to the people and his quick response to their needs.”
In an interview with The Post late last month, Allam said that despite airstrikes in the area, the hospital would not close or evacuate its patients.
Israel used a 2,000-pound bomb to destroy a residential building on the edge of Beirut’s southern suburbs Friday afternoon, less than 90 minutes after the army issued an evacuation notice for the building.
The Israeli Air Force struck the building with an MK-84 bomb equipped with a U.S.-made joint direct attack munition guidance kit, according to Richard Weir, a crisis, conflict and arms researcher at Human Rights Watch, who reviewed images of the attack at the request of The Washington Post. There were no immediate reports of casualties on the normally crowded street.
At least 52 people were killed Thursday, including women and children, in Israeli airstrikes across the south and east of the country, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.
