Afif, who was also Hezbollah’s head of media relations, was a close affiliate of Hezbollah’s former leader, Hasan Nasrallah, who was assassinated in an Israeli strike in September.
In northern Gaza, about 70 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes on the Beit Lahia area of northern Gaza early Sunday morning, Munir al-Bursh, director general of Gaza’s Health Ministry, told The Washington Post.
Dozens more were still trapped under the rubble, according to local reports. The Israel Defense Forces said “several strikes were conducted” on militant targets in Beit Lahia and that it made efforts to evacuate people from combat zones.
Israel intensified military operations in northern Gaza in early October, encircling it and hitting numerous targets, saying the move is aimed at stopping Hamas militants from regrouping. U.N. and aid officials say that areas of the enclave are on the edge of humanitarian collapse as a result.
Here are other key developments
- The IDF will issue 1,000 conscription notices Sunday to ultra-Orthodox Israelis after Defense Minister Israel Katz approved 7,000 to be sent. The minority community has lent crucial backing to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who had promised them continued exemptions from military service.
- The IDF said in a Sunday Telegram post that the Israeli Air Force struck “Hezbollah command centers” and infrastructure in Beirut’s southern suburbs. The IDF has accused the group of embedding itself among the Lebanese civilian population and said it issued warnings to residents urging them to evacuate.
- At least 43,846 people have been killed in Gaza during the war and 103,740 injured, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. At least 3,481 people have been killed and 14,786 injured in Lebanon, the country’s Health Ministry said. Neither agency distinguishes between civilians and combatants.
- Israel estimates that about 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, attack, including more than 300 soldiers. It says 374 soldiers have been killed in its military operation in Gaza….
