Earlier this week, the Israeli military issued its first citywide evacuation order since the war began, forcing residents to flee the eastern city of Baalbek and the surrounding area. At least 10 people were killed and 26 others were injured in Israeli attacks on Baalbek and neighboring areas on Friday, Lebanon’s Health Ministry said.
Israel said its strikes, which were preceded by evacuation orders for a number of buildings late Thursday and early Friday, targeted Hezbollah infrastructure, including weapons manufacturing facilities and command centers. Seven people were killed Thursday in northern Israel in a rocket attack from Lebanon, including four foreign workers, Israeli officials said. Maris Sangiampongsa, Thailand’s foreign minister, confirmed the deaths of four Thais and urged “all parties to return to the path of peace.”
Leaders of 15 U.N. agencies and other humanitarian organizations said Friday that the situation in northern Gaza is “apocalyptic” and that the entire population there is “at imminent risk of dying from disease, famine and violence.” Rescue workers “have been deliberately attacked and thwarted in their attempts to pull people buried under the rubble of their homes,” the groups said in a statement. “Humanitarian aid cannot keep up with the scale of the needs due to the access constraints.”
Here are other key developments

- High-ranking Iranian officials said Iran intends to respond to last week’s Israeli attack, state media reported on Thursday. Israel last week carried out retaliatory strikes against military targets in Iran, following Iran’s earlier ballistic missile barrage against Israel.
- U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters on Thursday that progress has been made toward reaching a deal in Lebanon. As for Gaza, he said the “focus now must be on ending the war.” Washington is also pushing Israel “on a daily basis” to increase humanitarian shipments to the enclave, he said.
- At least 43,259 people have been killed in Gaza during the war and 101,827 injured, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. At least 2,867 people have been killed and 13,047 injured in Lebanon, the country’s Health Ministry says. Neither agency distinguishes between civilians and combatants.
- Israel estimates that about 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, attack, including more than 300 soldiers. It says 366 soldiers have been killed in its military operation in Gaza…..
