Former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) said Thursday he was withdrawing from consideration as President-elect Trump’s nominee to be attorney general.
Gaetz announced the decision in a message on the social platform X, saying that while he had “excellent meetings” with senators Wednesday, it was clear his “confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition.”
“There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General,” Gaetz wrote.
His quick withdrawal suggests he had realized he was unlikely to win the votes necessary to be confirmed in the Senate. Gaetz could only have afforded three GOP defections assuming all Democrats in the upper chamber opposed his nomination, and several GOP senators had signaled their discomfort with the pick….

Republican Senator’s ARE Happy with the withdrawal….
Senate Republicans were breathing a deep sigh of relief Thursday afternoon after former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) announced he would withdraw his bid to serve as attorney general, acknowledging that allegations of sexual misconduct against him have become “a distraction.”
Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), the incoming chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, welcomed Gaetz’s decision to withdraw as “a positive development.”
“He must have gotten some signals yesterday during conversations he was having with senators that this was going to be a distraction,” she said. “Good on him to recognize that and be self-aware.”
Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) said he wasn’t surprised by Gaetz’s decision.
“These things always work out for the best. In this particular case, they made the right choice to withdraw the nomination,” he said.
Rounds said he wouldn’t disagree with Gaetz’s observation that his nomination had become a distraction….
Update….
Punchbowl News: “Gaetz has resigned from the 118th Congress. But he was elected to serve in the 119th Congress. Gaetz’s resignation letter said he didn’t intend to take the oath for the new Congress in January.”
“However, Gaetz could still be sworn in if he alerts the clerk of the House that he now intends to serve as a member come Jan. 3. It’s not clear what Gaetz will decide.”
“Yet if Gaetz does return, he will come under the jurisdiction of the Ethics Committee once again. That means the Ethics Committee report becomes an issue again – and it makes the stakes that much higher for the panel’s Dec. 5 meeting.”
