He wants to have a ‘voice’ in the party……
Right now?
Ya don’t cross Donald to do so….
When Trump loses?
He hopes to ALSO be able to say sheepishly…..
‘I told you so?’
He don’t have the ‘balls’ Liz Cheney and other Republicans have….
“Senator Mitt Romney, the retiring Republican from Utah and onetime standard-bearer of a party that has shifted under his feet, said Tuesday that he would not endorse Vice President Kamala Harris in the election because it might hamper a critical role he could play in helping to rebuild the G.O.P. down the line,” the New York Times reports.
Said Romney: “I’ve made it very clear that I don’t want Donald Trump to be the next president of the United States.”
But, he added later: “I want to continue to have a voice in the Republican Party following this election. I think there’s a good chance that the Republican Party is going to need to be rebuilt or reoriented.”
Salt Lake Tribune: Why Mitt Romney — no fan of Donald Trump — doesn’t plan to endorse Kamala Harris for president.
CG says
I do not think anybody on the left has any room to complain about this. He clearly stated he does not want Trump to be elected President. That’s about as clear as you can get. He is under no obligation to “endorse” anyone. Some people just have had an ideological gripe against Romney for years or perhaps feel guilty because he was the right who was right about Putin and Russia in 20212 while Obama and Biden were proven to be so tragically wrong, which according to Bob Woodward’s new book, Biden even has now admitted privately.
History will remember that Mitt Romney was the first Senator in American history to vote to convict a President of the same party. That took real political courage. He voted twice to convict Trump. He voted to confirm Biden’s Supreme Court nominee when almost no other Republican in the Senate did. Vote your conscience. Mitt Romney will do the same privately. He owes you nothing else.
Scott P says
Mitt doesn’t owe me anything. But he won’t be remembered the same way Liz Cheney, Dick Chenry, Adam Kinzinger and others who recognize what actually needs to be done in 2024 to save our Republic.
He proved today why he was the wrong choice in 2012.
CG says
He is the only one out of any of those people who will have voted against Donald Trump and spoke out against him in all three campaigns. Not two, or one, but all three. He is the only one to have voted to impeach or remove Trump from office on each occasion he was able to do so.
America and the world would be far better off today and we would never have had Donald Trump around politically if Romney had won in 2012 but that’s my view. People on the left are not going to agree, and that is what this criticism is about. He has done more as a Republican to oppose Trumpism than any other political figure since 2016 and he had among the least need to do so. He was already retired then.
I admire Kinzinger and I admire the Cheneys for doing what they did. Everyone has to do what suits their own conscience. Clearly, Romney did that in the Senate with his votes, and all that cost him and his family politically and personally. You don’t have to agree with him, but you should perhaps at least read the recent book he participated in.
Where is the criticism of Jon Tester, a lifelong Democrat, for refusing to endorse Kamala Harris? I am sure you are fine with him doing that because you think he needs to do whatever it takes to win in Montana this year.
jamesb says
Tester doesn’t look like he’s gonna be a US Senator come Jan. 1….
I think the Dem’s CAN get the House….
But the Senate don’t look too good….
CG says
I don’t recall you posting “Tester won’t endorse Harris” when he announced that. That seems more newsworthy than a retiring Republican Senator saying the same, while also saying he is once again opposing the election of the nominee of his party.
Yes, I think the best outcome for the country is if Harris wins (only because that means Trump loses) and a narrow House Dem majority and a narrow Republican Senate majority. There will be a lot of gridlock and that might be ok.
jamesb says
Yo CG?
Tester IS in DEEP Shit….
Like you fellow GOPer’s in runningaway from Trump?
Tester is doing the same with Harris….
Every man for himself, eh?
CG says
Tester is probably going to lose. Democrats though do not seem willing to criticize him. You even have Casey in Pennsylvania running ads where he says how he worked with Trump. If Tester is going to lose though, he might as well at least do so opposing Trump, which is probably what he actually believes.
Ghost of SE says
Florida, Texas, and that one race in Nebraska beg to differ regarding your Senate prediction.
CG says
Well, if Democrats win Florida, Texas, and Nebraska, they will keep the Senate. We will see what happens.
jamesb says
U REALLY think Cruz WILL LOSE?
Scott has a +6 Point lead in the latest poll, But the storm Could affect things….
Nebraska IS close….
Even outcome leaves Schumer in charge
Ghost of SE says
It is possible. I will not make an official prediction until the end of the month.
jamesb says
Ends of the MONTH?????
5 days out?????
Ghost of SE says
I’m aiming for around Halloween. That way I have as much information as possible.
jamesb says
I do understand an informed decision on ur call SE…..
Right now I think Harris
Democrats the House
GOPer’s the Senate
I reserve the right to change my final call
jamesb says
Lip service from Romney and Collins IS ALL you can expect…..
Again?
Liz Cheney.…A Registered REPUBLICAN HAS ‘Balls’.…
She IS being joined, surprisingly, by an ever EXPLANDING List of former Trump aide’s and other ‘Republicans’……
CG says
This “lip service” thing is ridiculous. Romney voted to impeach Trump on Ukraine. Liz Cheney defended him at the time. She voted twice for him to be President. Romney never did and openly spoke out against him. Now, I absolutely am glad she saw the light on Trump, but Romney was doing that long before January 6, 2021.
Both Mitt Romney and Liz Cheney are good Republicans and great Americans and if there is a party that can be saved long-term, (which can only happen if Trump loses), they should both be part of that.
jamesb says
Hey?
I’m NOT knocking Mittster as a BAD Republican….
I AM saying he ain’t got the ‘Balls’ Cheney and those who worked FOR Trump have in shitcanning Trump IN PUBLIC….
CG says
He’s been “shitcanning” Trump in public since he gave a speech during the 2016 primaries.
CG says
Romney has been doing that to Trump publicly since he gave a speech during the 2016 primaries.
Worry about your own “balls.”
Ghost of SE says
“Wrong choice in 2012”
I’ve debated this one. If the Republicans had actually gone with Trump in 2012(he talked himself up more than a few times) or Newt Gingrich/Rick Santorum, Obama would have likely won in a bigger landslide than his first win. But then, Romney(and even Jon Huntsman) was the only one who could have done as well as he did. So, dueling desires in respect to the future of the party.
The nomination of further out candidates may have purged their interest in these baroque candidacies. Or maybe it would have accelerated their decline and even the Electoral College and the Supreme Court wouldn’t be able to save them.
CG says
All of my final predictions for each state and each race will be posted on my blog by the end of the Monday night before the election (or any votes in Dixville Notch, NH are officially counted)
Ghost of SE says
My general philosophy on those first days of November is that the die has been well cast by then. Like the days between Christmas and New Years and how they don’t impact how one views the year writ large. Would have decided for October 25, but those extra 6 days could add to the calculus of the election somehow.
Gone are the days when I would issue predictions years out from an election.
Ghost of SE says
Dixville Notch and that other town I can never remember really don’t count for much. I feel like the same party always wins. And yet pundits assign them almost Iowa Caucus levels of significance.
Ghost of SE says
I stand corrected. Both Dixville Notch and Hart’s location have voted for Democrats since 2008. Prior to that, they were somewhat Republican leaning.
