Trump, Outrage and Political Violence

Peter Baker reminds us:

“Trump has long favored the language of violence in his political discourse, encouraging supporters to beat up hecklers, threatening to shoot looters and undocumented migrants, mocking a near-fatal attack on the husband of the Democratic House speaker and suggesting that a general he deemed disloyal be executed.”

“While Mr. Trump insists his fiery speech to supporters on Jan. 6, 2021, was not responsible for the subsequent ransacking of the Capitol, he resisted pleas from advisers and his own daughter that day to do more to stop the assault. He even suggested that the mob might be right to want to hang his vice president and has since embraced the attackers as patriots whom he may pardon if elected again.”

Mr. Trump does not pause to reflect on the impact of his own words. Just last week, his false pet-eating accusations against Haitian migrants during his debate with Ms. Harris were quickly followed by bomb threats that turned life upside-down in Springfield, Ohio, and he did nothing to discourage them. After 33 bomb threats, Ohio’s governor said Monday that law enforcement would conduct daily sweeps of schools in the town.

Asked by a reporter if he denounced the bomb threats, he demurred. “I don’t know what happened with the bomb threats,” he said. “I know that it’s been taken over by illegal migrants, and that’s a terrible thing that happened.”

Mr. Trump’s critics have at times employed the language of violence as well, though not as extensively and repeatedly at the highest levels. The former president’s allies distributed a video compilation online of various Trump opponents saying they would like to punch him in the face or the like. Some of the more extreme voices on social media in the past day have mocked or minimized the close call at the Florida golf course. Mr. Trump’s allies often decry what they call Trump Derangement Syndrome, the notion that his critics despise him so much they have lost their minds.

Anger, of course, has long been the animating force of Mr. Trump’s time in politics — both the anger he stirs among supporters against his rivals and the anger that he generates among opponents who come to loathe him. Predictions that he might rethink that after he narrowly escaped death in Butler proved ephemeral. By halfway through his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention five days later, he was back to himself…..

      • If anything, I am checking and tempering my own optimism over the course of the next month.

        If things continue to go well for her, I’d also add Kansas, Missouri, South Carolina, and Utah to the list of reach states. That’s in addition to all the swing states plus Alaska, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, and Texas.

          • I’ve actively thinned my list of upset possibilities down to more reasonable targets in the Presidential, House, and Senate races. I had several ideas beyond the states I listed @12:58 that turned out to be too far fetched to be seriously considered. Several Deep South/Great Plains states you’ve heard me talk about are no longer serious considerations(if they ever really were) in my eyes.

            I agree with the article I posted on how high her margin could go, but I’ll keep that discussion within reason. It won’t be a Reagan style landslide. At most LBJ.

              Claiming a “ landslide “ for Harris is in the making, that states like thoroughly red Utah and South Carolina are possible Harris states is ludicrous.Nobody believes that, even the biggest daydreamers in Harris’s campaign.

              That guy running against Mace isn’t going to win no matter how much money he would spend,Indeed Ive seen no evidence of a real campaign by him.

              You were apparently angered by my assailing your support for the kooky Marianne Williamson and your “ prediction “ of a massive Democratic sweep in the Congressional races . I considered that maybe you were just joking or something but obviously you weren’t as the “ silliness” I referred to is continuing.

              I have nothing personal against you and in some ways you come across as person deeply interested in the political process, but then you go off on for lack of a better term a “ tangent “ complete with patently absurd statements and “ predictions.”

              If calling me names makes you feel better? Go at it.I don’t care. However, possibly stepping back and giving more thought to your posts and a more realistic view of what is provable rather that what you simply “ wish” were true would go a long way toward people here taking you seriously.

    Could not be more bullish on Harris’ odds of flipping the state and Republicans cratering down the ticket with the toxic duo of Trump & Robinson as their standard bearers. My call on both is 58-39 Stein over Robinson and 52-47 Harris over Trump in NC. One of my next donations is going to be Caleb Rudow, a Democratic Staye Legislator running against Congressman Chuck Edwards in Western NC(he ousted Madison Cawthorn two years ago in the Primary). Definitely in play if things are as bad as they seem for Republicans.

    Georgia I have my fingers crossed on. Saw an unusual number of Harris/Walz signs in Gainesville/Hall County today relative to the Biden/Harris signs I saw 4 years ago(and the presence of those was enough to make me call GA correctly last time). Trump won the county 71-28. With juiced turnout and new voters, that could become 63-36 or so for Trump. If he’s underperforming in the darker red exurbs, it more than makes up for the support Democrats have shed in Fulton/DeKalb/Clayton. Likewise with the signage I’ve spotted around where I live, which is anchored by a burgeoning College campus. My county voted 78-20 Trump last time, around 30% for Harris now sounds about right. About a 51-47 win for Harris statewide, with Libertarian nominee Chase Oliver getting one of his highest vote shares in his native state.

    Florida is tough but doable. Some polls have shown Harris improving on Biden’s weakness in Miami-Dade and making further inroads around the Jacksonville and St. Petersburg metros and around the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. Another toxic combination of Trump and Rick Scott, plus abortion being on the ballot, could result in Democrats finally threading the needle here for the first time since 2012.

  18. Those 40% or so Hispanic voters who say they support Trump might want to revisit that view in light of his urging the deportation of the Haitians who are here legally.

    So if he is elected your status here as legal immigrant or even citizenship might not save you from the Republican roundup.

  24. Regarding Western NC

    There are some enclaves in there beyond Asheville/Buncombe County in which Democrats have had spotty success. Boone/Catawba County has trended Democratic in the Trump era, as it is anchored by Appalachian State University. We’ve made recent inroads in Waynesville/Haywood County in the last handful of years since Biden was blown out there by Trump. Cashiers/Jackson County, like the rest of the state, has been on the periphery of competitive since Obama won it in 2008. Swain County(Bryson City and Cherokee) likely wouldn’t vote for another Democrat even in a best case scenario for us.

    I’m kicking myself for not hitting the Asheville/Rutherfordton/Cowpens Battlefield area when I had the chance a few months ago.

  25. I know a guy who moved out to the Lake Secession, SC, area a couple of months ago. Downed trees everywhere and gas shortages. I know Greenville/Spartanburg still has extensive power outages, though I’m not sure of anything more up that way. For a big metro area, they seem to have weathered it astonishingly well.

  30. If Joe Biden is going to have a successful post Presidency on the order of Carter, one thing he should do is hit the clubs and start siring children. Because Hunter cannot be his legacy. And besides, who could resist a little tyke in aviator glasses?
