Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris is working “tirelessly” for a cease-fire in Gaza, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Monday night, using her primetime Democratic National Convention remarks to spotlight the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
The reference has been a rare one from the main stage so far, though the DNC held a panel discussion earlier Monday about Palestinian human rights.
“She is working tirelessly to secure a cease-fire in Gaza and bringing the hostages home,” Ocasio-Cortez told the crowd to loud applause. In her speech, the left-leaning New York Democrat laid out the case for progressives to support Harris as the presidential nominee, praising her as a “president who is for the middle class because she is from the middle class.”
The crowd warmly recieved Ocasio-Cortez: She walked onto the stage to chants of “AOC!” and even paused her remarks once to take in the cheers. The Monday time slot offered a more high-profile perch for the New Yorker compared to 2020, when she got just a minute and a half to speak….
HERE’S WHAT TO KNOW:
- Harris gave the crowd a pep talk: ‘It’s going to be a ‘great week’
- She earlier proposed increasing the corporate tax rate to 28 percent
- Tim Walz is everywhere at the DNC
- A pro-Israel group used the DNC to tout Harris’ support for Israel
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz was mobbed by photographers, reporters and delegates hoping to snap a selfie when he entered his box at the United Center, capping off a day in which he barnstormed seven state delegation breakfasts and caucuses and was ceremonially nominated as the party’s vice presidential pick.
The throng around him was so intense delegates seated nearby asked security to help clear out the crowd.
AOC: Harris working ‘tirelessly’ for a cease-fire
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s DNC speech laid out the progressive case for supporting the vice president.
The 2016 campaign hits aren’t over yet. Just when we thought we were back to 2016 with Sara Bareilles’ “Brave,” Hillary Clinton left the stage to her campaign anthem “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten. We’re so back….
…
South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn thanked “Joe and Kamala” for their work over the past four years in his speech — bridging his strong allyship with President Joe Biden over to Vice President Kamala Harris.
The former House Majority Whip helped Biden get the Democratic nomination in 2020 and remained a strong supporter of his 2024 reelection bid until the president withdrew from the race…..
….
Hillary Clinton invoked her own famed concession speech about having “not shattered that highest and hardest glass ceiling” — but suggested that Kamala Harris could be the one to do it.
Clinton, who narrowly lost the presidency to Donald Trump in 2016, declared “this is when we break through” in a speech that left many in the crowd emotional and prompted arguably the biggest cheer of the night.
Protest’s….
Yes there where some …
But NOT of the size some expected….
The crowd on Monday appeared to number in the low thousands, and while sizable it was smaller than organizers had expected. In an interview before the march started, an organizer said he hoped that more protesters would converge on Chicago during the week.
Unlike at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee last month, where protests were mostly contained to the first day, activists from different groups have announced plans to gather repeatedly in Chicago.
Another protest group, focused on issues affecting poor and homeless people, marched up to the edge of the security perimeter on Monday evening. More demonstrations were scheduled on Tuesday, on Wednesday and again on Thursday evening, when Ms. Harris was expected to speak from the main stage….
Trump Is Worried About the TV Ratings for Harris’ DNC Speech
CG says
Probably at least a half hour until Biden gets to speak. For his sake, I hope he has taken a nap tonight.
jamesb says
Did you see the Biden clip when he was a new Senator?
HE DID have it back in the day…..
They are now chanting ‘We LOVE Joe’….
But it didn’t last too long……
CG says
Well, the POTUS has been dumpe,d out of prime time. Reminds me of 1992 when Pat Bucha, nan spoke during the prime time hour and former President President Reagan had to go later after a lot of people had already gone to bed.
These speakers are probably not going to hurt the party like Buchanan did for Republicans, but this is horrible organi, zing. They should have started today’s program 90 minutes earlier this afternoon.
jamesb says
Ur Up CG…..
The HIGHLIGHTS WIIL be palyed ALL over except on Fox……
CG says
Fox will cover it live, like everyone else is.
But it’s 11 15 EST now. A lot of people have gone to bed or are not able to watch live and will not see his speech. Maybe that was by design.
jamesb says
Actually….
Fox IS covering it LIVE…..
My Bad…..
CG says
I have tremendously important post in moderation
jamesb says
Jill Biden gets a rousing Welcome……
CG says
I remember how Al Gore had to rush through his 2000 acceptance speech, because he was told that if he was not done by 11 pm EST, the networks would stop their coverage, no matter what.
jamesb says
NOBODY has cut fcrom Joe Biden’s speech….
NOBODY…
jamesb says
‘We LOVE JOE‼️’
CG says
Correct, but the ratings will be down substantially than if he had gone an hour earlier.
Will be higher ratings than night 1 of the Republican Convention though I bet. Their wrap up speaker was the Teamsters Boss.
CG says
I will be interested to see if President Biden says the word “Obama” at all.
CG says
Here come the protestors…
CG says
No widespread interruptions during the speech. It would have been a different story if he were still the nominee.
Best news of the day is that the number of pro-Hamas protesters in Chicago today were FAR fewer than promised by the organizers. Today was supposed to be the biggest day of protests.
jamesb says
I added the protest info in the post…..
Yes LESS….
And handled well…
Will be more during the week….
CG says
Definitely under moderation now. I can’t even copy and paste anybody in the “Leave a Reply” box. That is new.
jamesb says
And ur up….
CG says
I was trying to leave a comment about how the protests today were nowhere near as big as promised. Good news.
Ghost of SE says
Just like the Uncommitted vote in the Primaries, the bark is eons bigger than the bite.
Ghost of SE says
But there’s good reason the faceless ‘Uncommitted’ gained more traction than Biden’s actual Primary opposition
jamesb says
Biden doesn’t want to have it end…..
CG says
I effectively voted “Uncommitted” in this year’s D Presidential primary.
CG says
I didn’t have Biden praising Henry Kissinger in the speech tonight on my bingo card!
Ghost of SE says
He is a man of a different generation. Glad he was switched out.
jamesb says
I’m GALD he gets this chance to say his piece even if it Late at Night…
CG says
Maybe the last time a DNC ran this late, McGovern was accepting the nomination.
CG says
The unexpected Kissinger shout-out and the freak out on Twitter by left-wingers bumps this speech all the way up to a B minus for me.
Ghost of SE says
Biden is of a different time. No surprise he hearts Kissinger. I’d just as soon give his speech no time. In short order, time will march on and the bloodlusting ghouls here and in Washington will be put out to pasture and eaten.
Harris/Walz ’24.
CG says
Quoting “American Anthem” like he did in his Inaugural Address is a good move.
CG says
Should have just timed it a bit better to end with “America, America, I gave my best to you”…. and then walked off stage.
jamesb says
Joe Biden has 5 More Months as President….
But Tonight he passed the torch and did so saying HIS Piece…..
GOOD!
jamesb says
Maddow MSNBC…..Harris clearly says to Biden….’I LOVE You Joe’……
jamesb says
Ok….
I’m out….
This should be Good media coverage narrative in the morning…..
Trump just whinning and crying on the road…..
jamesb says
Harris IS gonna get a bounce….
Ghost of SE says
Working tonight, so I didn’t get to see a lot. But what I saw was super positive and well done.
People still talking about FL,OH, a second vote from NE, and TX as reach targets will be gobsmacked when AK, AR, IN, KS, KY, SC, TN, and UT come into play.
CG says
However effective the messaging, the timing was all off. They ran way, way way, off schedule. They could have simply started it earlier in the afternoon. Biden was very forceful, but went on about twice as long as he should have and basically gave the acceptance speech he wanted to give.
But darn it, that line from “American Anthem” gets me every time.
Ghost of SE says
Apart from us, not many watch the first night. It’s why they consigned Biden and Hillary Clinton to this evening’s time slots.
CG says
“Let me know in my heart
When my days are through
America, America
I gave my best to you”
You don’t have to be a Biden fan to appreciate that sentiment. What a contrast to the current leader of the other party who only takes for himself and could never understand sacrifice.
CG says
I like the video showing delegates batting down a big “Stop Israel” banner with their “I Love Joe” placards.
CG says
They did ax James Taylor from tonight’s show due to time issues.
Ghost of SE says
You need the Handy Man to fix these timing issues.
Scott P says
Just getting back from a week on the Maine Coast. Did I miss Biden demanding the nomination back from Harris?
jamesb says
He, he, he……..
I went somewhere warm last month…
Nope…..
Biden sticks with doing the‘Right Thing’
Was the last speaker, went long …..
He was greeted with a sustained solid several minutes of applause….
He’s Alright…
So is Kamala, who enjoyed herself
