Freed hostage: Mr. al-Qadi, who is from a village near the southern city of Rahat, was working as an unarmed guard at an agricultural plant in Magen, a small Israeli kibbutz near the border with Gaza, when he was abducted. He is a member of Israel’s impoverished Bedouin Arab minority. At least 17 Bedouins died in the Oct. 7 attacks. After his rescue, Mr. al-Qadi was taken to a hospital and was in “stable medical condition,” the military said.
-
Past rescues: The Israeli military has now rescued eight living hostages since the war began, and those operations have often killed scores of Palestinians. Israeli military officials say the remaining hostages are being held throughout the Gaza Strip, with many believed to be in Hamas’s underground tunnel network.

Regional fears: Hezbollah and Israel appeared to de-escalate after their major confrontation over the weekend, but for many people across the Middle East, any feelings of relief were undercut by a deeper sense of deadlock. Roughly 150,000 displaced Israelis and Lebanese are still waiting to return to their homes along the countries’ border as Israeli forces and Hezbollah continue to trade strikes. The violence there is intertwined with the 10-month war in Gaza. Months of talks have yet to yield a breakthrough.

U.N. aid resumes: The United Nations’ humanitarian aid operations in Gaza restarted on Tuesday after the Israeli military this weekend ordered the organization to evacuate its operations hub in the territory, forcing a pause. The military had said it was intensifying operations in the area to target Hamas and its remaining infrastructure.

Far-right minister: Israel’s national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, drew outrage for saying he would support building a synagogue at the Aqsa Mosque complex in Jerusalem, on a disputed site that is holy to Jews and Muslims. The comments, which came in response to a radio interviewer’s question, prompted denunciations from several Arab states and led Mr. Netanyahu’s office to issue a statement saying there was no change to the status quo at the site…..

Hostage Qadi….
Israeli forces discovered Qadi while searching a tunnel network in southern Gaza, military officials said. He was alone and unguarded when they found him, the officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity in line with military protocol.
His brother, Hatem al-Qadi, said in a phone interview that he felt “great joy” over his sibling’s release and that he was “in good health.”
“It’s something indescribable,” Hatem al-Qadi said. “It feels as if he came back to life.”
Qadi, a father of 11 and member of Israel’s Bedouin Arab minority, was flown to the Soroka Medical Center in Beer Sheva in southern Israel. He “is fully conscious and in good overall condition,” a spokesperson for the medical center said in a statement early Tuesday. He and a relative reunited with “great emotion” inside the hospital, the statement said….

Iran/US talks…
Iran’s supreme leader opened the door Tuesday to renewed negotiations with the United States over his country’s rapidly advancing nuclear program, telling its civilian government there was “no harm” in engaging with its “enemy.”
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s remarks set clear red lines for any talks taking place under the government of reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian and renewed his warnings that Washington wasn’t to be trusted.
But his comments mirror those around the time of Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, which saw Tehran’s nuclear program greatly curtailed in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. Yet it remains unclear just how much room Pezeshkian will have to maneuver, particularly as tensions remain high in the wider Middle East over the Israel-Hamas war and as the U.S. prepares for a presidential election in November….
Aug 27, 2024 – ISW Press
Iran has tried to insert itself into the ceasefire-hostage negotiations between Israel and Hamas since Israel killed Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, according to regional sources speaking to Emirati media. An anonymous source told the outlet that Iran has become a “key behind-the-scenes player” in the negotiations. Senior Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Affairs Minister Abbas Araghchi, have repeatedly engaged Egyptian and Qatari mediators in recent weeks, as CTP-ISW has reported. Iran trying to insert itself into the negotiations is consistent with CTP-ISW’s assessment that some elements of the Iranian regime, possibly from the Pezeshkian administration, are likely trying to delay an Iranian attack on Israel until the negotiations conclude.
