Why it matters: Vance, a Trump critic-turned-fervent supporter, is one of the former president’s closest allies on Capitol Hill and a loyal defender of his domestic and foreign policy.
- Trump allies are hopeful that Vance, a Rust Belt native famous for his bestseller “Hillbilly Elegy,” could help boost the former president’s standing among voters in some of these key states in November.
- The long-awaited announcement at the Republican National Convention came after Trump survived an assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally over the weekend…..
A senior GOP source with knowledge of the process told CBS News the “pick is in” for Donald Trump’s running mate and will be announced on Republican convention floor a little after 4:30 p.m. ET.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) has been informed he will not be Trump’s running mate, Reuters reports.
A source told Fox News that North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum has received a call notifying the senator that he’s not Donald Trump’s choice for running mate.

Guess it’s Vance?

While I clearly do not want Trump to win, he almost certainly is going to, so I am hoping it will be Youngkin and definitely not Vance.
Speculation on the airwaves that his brush of death has “changed” him enough to pick Nikki Haley.
CG says
My prediction of likelihood
1. JD Vance
2. Glenn Youngkin
3. Mike Pompeo
4, Ben Carson
5, Nikki Haley
6. Robert O’Brien

I saw Tim Scott having brunch with his mother at a Charleston bistro yesterday afternoon dressed in a tee shirt and jeans.
He didn’t look like he was going to be the vp candidate in 24 hours or so!
CG says
Was the fiancee anywhere around?
My Name Is Jack says
No.
I saw them together about a month ago at the same bistro.
He’s a Sunday regular there.
Great brunch !
The wife and I go about once a month. It’s at Charleston Place .the big hotel across from the old market ,where slaves were sold.It used to house the Daughters of the Confederacy. They vacated a few years ago and took the Confederate flag with them.
CG says
Tim Scott’s wedding is scheduled for August. We will see. It does not seem like any of that was enough to convince Trump of whatever Trump wanted to be convinced of.

He isn’t….

Trump has picked 39 year old Vance, whom once called him “America’s Hitler.”

Absolute horrible news for anyone who wants to see Ukraine beat Russia. A whole lot of Republicans have been saying (besides believing that Trump would never actually pick Vance), that Trump is not going to do anything as President to harm Ukraine.
This is clearly a sign that U.S. aid will be ending for Ukraine and that we may be getting out of NATO also.
It seems even more crucial than ever that Trump be defeated at the ballot box, but it really feels like Democrats, by sticking with Joe Biden, are just resigned to letting Trump win.
My Name Is Jack says
Yes I see little chance now of Biden dropping out .
Sad for America.

There is one guy who posted at the replacement of the HHR site, (who now curiously does not post because they had to start requiring a valid email address there), who was all in for Trump and lashed out against any criticism of Trump (after being NeverTrump himself in 2016), who said that if he picks Vance, he will not vote for the ticket over Vance’s Ukraine position. I will probably never know if he was going to stick with that position.
jamesb says
CG?
If you haven’t been listening?
Trump IS STILL pissed at the Ukraine for NOT helping him screw Biden…..
Trump does NOT SEE Russia as we do….

It’s not really a major point but it seems like the incidents that McConnell had several months ago can be explained.
We knew he had fallen a short time earlier and suffered a concussion and that his two public “freezes” may have related to a post-complication of that, along with dehydration or having not eaten all day in one circumstance. He felt like he was about to faint and instead just stood still until the moment passed. McConnell is clearly aging physically, and is said to be sensitive about that, but when he speaks, he appears to be the same cognitively that he always was. I understand he was booed at the convention today when he announced Kentucky’s votes for Trump.

Too bad John Dean co-opted the title “ Blind Ambition.”
Might have made a good title for a book on Vance.

People on the right I used to communicate with on another site and who support Trump are VERY UPSET that he picked Vance.
My Name Is Jack says
Any particular reason?
Scott P says
Vance once called Trump “America’s Hitler”
CG says
Over Ukraine and foreign policy.
They kept insisting “no, Trump is not really going to abandon Ukraine. He just says that because…” No, he meant it. Trump is done with Ukraine and probably done with NATO.
CG says
Some of them are saying that Trump might have thrown the election away (I doubt this really matters all that much now this year) or that why they wish Trump the best they can no longer vote for him (doubt that will last in their minds.)
I guess is it is bad enough that 78 year old Trump will be President again. It’s literally impossible to get worse than him, but it’s also bad that there is a decent chance that JD Vance will be President sometime in the next few years.
jamesb says
CG?
They’ll get over it like ALL the other idiots who bent over for Trump
CG says
I agree. These particular people would find a way to vote for him even if he picked David Duke.
Scott P says
Trump doubling down on the angry white guy vote anti woman’s choice vote and saying fuck the suburban college educated vote that respects NATO.
Probably because he’s overconfident.
As a serious American I’m voting for the nominee of the only party that can defeat him.
I would suggest all serious Americans and patriots do the same.
Jesters gonna jest.
CG says
My first prediction, last year, was that he would wind up picking Vance.
Ghost of SE says
Probably the one VP choice that actually hurts Trump and gives Democrats a real shot.
Democrats need to stand firm with Biden/Harris now. No more talk of a switch out. Project stability in the face of the chaos agents. Biden’s been decent at his rallies recently, 3 1/2 more months of careful orchestration and a fine tuned effort on the campaign’s part can turn the ship around
If nothing else, Vance probably brings those leery donors back to the Biden camp.
CG says
At some level, Trump considers having been called “America’s Hitler” a compliment.
Vance probably sold it to him that way.
CG says
Nikki Haley’s son trolls Tim Scott by posting on his social media that Scott has called off his wedding after the JD Vance pick.

Tim Scott may be listening to Elton John’s “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” on repeat.

J.D. Vance offers Democrats an opening…
….Still, a fully functional Democratic campaign might be able to make some hay of this pick, perhaps by treating Vance as a cipher about whom little is known but who has been endorsed by right-wing groups like the authors of Project 2025. Democrats had success in running against these sorts of candidates in 2022, particularly Blake Masters in Arizona, who like Vance has ties to the venture capitalist Peter Thiel.
The question is whether the Democratic campaign is firing on anything resembling all cylinders right now, spending much of its time in a defensive posture stage-managing Biden’s appearances and fending off the intraparty revolt against him. In his debate against Trump last month, Biden was completely unable to drive a message or land any punches. Harris might be more effective than Biden if there’s a VP debate against Vance — both parties are amenable to having one in principle, but they haven’t agreed to a date — though VP debates rarely have long-lasting effects.
Vance’s defenses of January 6 could also play into Democratic messaging about how democracy is under threat. But there’s also the question of whether the “Democracy is on the ballot” message has been effective in the first place. It’s been the centerpiece of Biden’s campaign from the start — but polls find that the message mostly resonates with high-engagement, college-educated voters, which is basically the only group that Biden hasn’t lost ground with since 2020. A new Democratic ticket, with more ideological balance than the Republican one, could perhaps offer a fresher spin on it, while also making a better claim than Vance to truly representing the interests of the working class…..

J.D. Vance Was Not Always His Name. But It’s the One That Felt Closest to Home.
….At birth, Mr. Vance was named James Donald Bowman, after his father, Donald Bowman. Mr. Bowman was Mr. Vance’s mother’s second husband — Mr. Vance wrote that they split up when he was a toddler, and that Mr. Bowman gave him up for adoption when he was 6.
After the divorce, Mr. Vance’s mother married Bob Hamel, who became J.D.’s legal father, and she changed her son’s name. James Donald Bowman became James David Hamel, swapping out her ex-husband’s first name for her uncle’s name, David, to preserve the “J.D.” — which by then was Mr. Vance’s established nickname. (“This seemed a bit of a stretch even when I was six,” Mr. Vance wrote. “Any old D name would have done, so long as it wasn’t Donald.”)
A few years later, Mr. Hamel and J.D.’s mother split up. “One of the worst parts, honestly, was that Bob’s departure would further complicate the tangled web of last names in our family.” His mother, he wrote, took the last name of “whatever husband she was married to.” Her own parents (“Mamaw” and “Papaw”) were Vances…..

Pollsree Harry Enten said that not only is Vance the most unpopular VP pick since 1980. He polls WORSE in his home region–the Midwestern rust belt– than in the US at large
A truly horrible pick.
But Trump can’t terminate his candidacy. Gotta carry it rhe whole way. No exceptions!
