President Joe Biden give’s up….
It appear’s that his Vice President, a mixed race , 59 year old woman from California, Kamala Harris, will be the Democrat to run against 78 year old Donald Trump….
Things ARE going to be vastly different than Trump & Co. thought up to this morning….
Democrats appear to coming together finally to focus on supporting Harris and NOT letting Donald Trump get a chance at the Presidency again…
Powerful leaders of the Democratic establishment quickly embraced Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday after President Biden’s shocking exit from the race, hoping that a seamless succession could end a month of damaging chaos and transform a contest widely believed to be tipping toward Republicans.
By Sunday evening, Ms. Harris appeared to have a glide path to the nomination: No other top Democrats announced plans to challenge her, though some stopped short of an endorsement, including the party’s top congressional leaders and former President Barack Obama.
With breathtaking speed, she took control of Mr. Biden’s enormous political operation and contacted Democratic leaders in Congress and state houses to ask for their support. The Biden campaign formally renamed itself “Harris for President,” giving her immediate access to an account that had $96 million in cash at the end of June. On an internal call, the Biden campaign’s leaders told staff members that they would now work for Ms. Harris.
“I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party — and unite our nation — to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda,” Ms. Harris said in a statement. “We have 107 days until Election Day. Together, we will fight. And together, we will win.”
The rapid turn of events plunged the party and the nation into unfamiliar political territory, giving unelected Democratic officials the final say over the party’s nominee. Complicated decisions loom. Ms. Harris must choose a running mate, take charge of the campaign with little time before early voting begins in some states in September, rebuild support among voters who had fled Mr. Biden and prepare to withstand a full-blown Republican assault.
Speculation immediately turned to her potential running mate, with many Democrats privately arguing that Ms. Harris should pick a white man to widen her appeal and provide demographic balance to the ticket. A flotilla of governors — including Roy Cooper of North Carolina, Andy Beshear of Kentucky, Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and Tim Walz of Minnesota — as well as Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona have been frequently mentioned by donors, officials and other lawmakers.
Mr. Biden endorsed Ms. Harris within minutes on Sunday afternoon. Before she had uttered a word about her intentions, he was swiftly followed by other party leaders, including Bill and Hillary Clinton, key Democratic senators and influential House members. By the evening, Mr. Shapiro had publicly backed Ms. Harris after a phone call from her. She also picked up endorsements from Gov. Gavin Newsom of California, Mr. Cooperand Mr. Kelly…..
…
The party’s quick embrace of Ms. Harris poured a dash of cold water on the idea that some other challenger would emerge. Any Democratic rival would face a steep climb to match her political support, money and other resources. Such a bid could also hurt the candidate’s future prospects, particularly among Black women, who are some of the party’s most reliable voters.
Many Democrats felt a palpable sense of enthusiasm and relief. They now see an opportunity to recover from nearly a month of internal battles and a race that seemed headed for catastrophic defeats from the White House all the way down to statehouse races.
“Democrats have a choice to make: unite and win, or fight each other and lose,” said Mayor Randall L. Woodfin of Birmingham, Ala., urging his party to embrace Ms. Harris. Mr. Woodfin, who had been a strong supporter of Mr. Biden’s, said Democrats now had “a chance to have a younger ticket that pulls in more younger voters, enthusiasm, energy and excitement.”….

Harris adds another page to the history books since becoming the first woman United States Vice President….

Some of the latest finds when it comes to JD Vance (or whatever his name is) and quotes that will find their way into advertising this fall.
“I hate the police.”
“The more white people feel like voting for Trump the more black people will suffer.”
“I know I could never support Trump if it really mattered.”
“He’s just a bad man. A morally reprehensible human being.”
I have donated to a group that will be putting these on billboards all over the midwest.
Yesterday the Harris campaign reported over 170,000 people have volunteered for the campaign. A zoom call raised over 8 million dollars and over 100,000 people registered to vote.
The best, over half the folks contributing to the campaign were first time contributors — the gift that will keep on giving.

What a piece of shit. With his rage “truthing” he may stroke out tonight. That would only be a shame because he wouldn’t live to see his defeat at the ballot box.

There’s rumors that RFK Jr will drop out today and endorse Trump.
Not sure how credible that is (heard it from Tim Miller–a former Jeb Bush campaign spokesman now all in as a serious anti Trumper) on The Bulwark podcast.
Keith says
Trump and RFKjr have lots in common.
Both have abused women, they’re nuts, and both would do damage to our democracy.

Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans–born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage–and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world.
[Of course, Kamala Harris was not born in this century; had she been so, she would be to young to become President.]

These days, you might not be able to get Members of Congress to agree on what hour of the day it is, but it seems like just about everyone in Congress, Democrat or Republican, thinks the Director of the Secret Service should resign.
Thus far, she is saying no. Perhaps President Biden should make the decision for her.

From http://www.Electoral-Vote.com:
Dean Phillips Was Right
As you might vaguely remember, Rep. Dean Phillips (DFL-MN) ran against Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination for a bit earlier this year. So did Marianne Williamson, but Phillips is a three-term member of the House and the company he co-owns makes a mean gelato, so his candidacy carried a bit more weight (but not much).
Phillips didn’t disagree with Biden’s policies. In fact, he voted for them 100% of the time. His pitch was that Biden was too old to win the election. Everyone pooh-poohed him. Biden was in great shape and certainly not too old to win.
Phillips didn’t actually want to be president. He just wanted somebody out there to prevent Biden from getting the nomination because he was convinced Biden was not up to another 4 years and could not win the election. He wanted to prevent a Trump presidency at all costs. He called Govs. J.B. Pritzker (D-IL) and Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) to try to get them to run. Neither returned his calls. Giving advice runs in his family. His grandmother, Pauline Phillips, wrote the Dear Abby advice column.
When Phillips failed to get any high-profile Democrat to jump in, as a desperation measure, he jumped in himself. Not that it did a lot of good. For whatever consolation it might be to Phillips, nobody believed Cassandra either, even though she was right, too. (V)

Professor Allan Lichtman of American University predicts Harris will win.
Lichtman has accurately called the winner of every presidential election since 1984.
CG says
He was predicting Biden would win too up until Biden dropped out. That did not seem likely.
Also, I believe he did not correct the winner in 2000 and instead has somehow claimed he still has a perfect record because the elections was “stolen”, which it was not.
So, he has been wrong once at least.
CG says
He then said he only ever predicted the winner of the popular vote, which in that case, he got wrong in 2016.
jamesb says
Clinton won the popular vote by Millions right?
jamesb says
Yup…….
In fact
Democrats have wOn the popular votes for President for the last few decades.,,.
CG says
How do you define “last few” decades? They won the popular vote the last four times, while still legitimately losing the last four elections.
In your lifetime, Republicans won 5 out of 6 elections, almost all by landslides, in one stretch. Things go up and down in politics, although I sense realignment, potentially as it relates to both parties, is closer than it has been in generations.
CG says
*losing one out of the four.
Too busy to be accurate in my typing. Gotta go.
jamesb says
Clinton (2)
Obama (2)
Biden (1)
jamesb says
Bush 1 (1)
Bush 2 (2)
Trump (1)
Hmmmm?
CG says
And she lost, as Lichtman predicted (unlike myself and most others.)
However, if he wants credit for that win, he cannot claim a mulligan for 2000, when he was wrong in his prediction.
jamesb says
So about 20 years ago he got the vote right, but not the winner?
I would think his batting average is pretty damn good……
And no wonder Alito and Republicans are working hard at voter suppression…..
CG says
This is where you, as is frequently the case, go off on insane, unrelated, and inaccurate tangents.
But at least you aren’t claiming that “Biden is a much stronger candidate than Harris would be” anymore.
jamesb says
He was till the debate
Then that went out the window
jamesb says
We ALL have our tangents…..:
We learn to live with them here
jamesb says
So on the basic?
He DOES get right that Democrats get the majority vote for the last few decades…..
CG says
Again, that is irrelevant. Lichtman tries to have it both ways in regards to what a “win” is. The only correct answer is whomever gets 270 plus Electoral Votes.
I feel like you have to be reminded that George W. Bush won 51% of the popular vote in 2004. At that time, it was a larger share of the vote than any Democrat candidate for President had gotten in 40 years.
Sadly, for me at least, that Republican Party seems to be no more.
jamesb says
His prediction COULD HAVE be correct fir November……..
We’ll never know……
Explain 2020 please?
CG says
Huh? He predicted Biden would beat Trump. So, did I and almost everyone else capable of objectivity.
All of those people were of the belief that Trump was about to beat Biden in 2024. Now, circumstances have changed and we have a much closer race.

In regards to 2020, since that what you mentioned.

CG says
Roy Cooper has taken himself out of consideration.
In terms of what helps the most politically, Shapiro of Pennsylvania would be the best pick, if the party can get around the anti-Semites on the left, and that could be a problem to get around.
In regards to Kelley… he was a Republican up until a few years ago. Besides for the gun control issue (where he and his wife endorsed some Republicans as well), he never took any sort of political position, Then, he was enticed to run for Senate and was pretty much a bland, boilerplate Democrat. I do not think Kelley is any sort of true blue progressive, which is good from my perspective.
I think Walz might be the better campaigner and debater though.
CG says
Labor unions are apparently pushing Gary Peters. He is really bland, but would seemingly guarantee that next VP is a Midwesterner with a beard they grew in the last few years.
If he is picked, it probably mostly about Michigan, but also, his ex-wife once had an abortion, and that could be a thing they want to talk about in the campaign as much as possible.

CG says
I don’t see the connection you are trying to make.
I am just saying that Kelly was either somewhat apolitical or Republican, based on what he has claimed, before he got into a Senate race a few years and cosplayed as a moderate progressive.
It is true that as an Arizona Senator, he has been very critical of the Biden Administration on the border issue. It would be interesting if Harris were to pick him and admit that she now feels somewhat differently about the issue. It would be a political plus for her.
Some will have an issue though over that he has a Jewish wife, and one that was once a politician. If he gets picked, just watch Trump say something crazy about Gabby Giffords. Disabled people set him off.
jamesb says
I’m just saying Kelley came up in the beginning and is STILL THERE……
Media editors still are fronting him.,..
I ‘ve said i’d go for a East Coast pick
CG says
Is Pennsylvania considered “east coast.” More like Mid-Atlantic. What are you thinking of with “east coast.” What “east coast” states are at risk/competitive?
jamesb says
States ON the East Coast……
jamesb says
Pa and NC. WOULD qualify
CG says
I don’t think you know what states are literally on the “east coast.” Pennsylvania is not one of them. I don’t rhink anybody in Pennsylvania would ever say, “I live on the east coast.” They are not a coastal state.
Technically, North Carolina borders the Atlantic, but is considered a “southern” state more than “east coast.” Regardless, Cooper is already out of the Veepstakes.
CG says
I do not think there has been a Democrat in about 100 years who said, “I need someone from the east coast” for a ticket. They do not say it about the west coast either. I don’t mean to nitpick over this, but your choice of words is just so odd.
Harris will be the first ever Democrat nominee for President from a Western state.
jamesb says
Obama/Biden……
Clinton/Gore…..
Carter/Mondale….

Biden was not picked because he was from an “east coast” state . Clinton and Gore were from neighboring Southern states. AR and TN are most certainly not “east coast.”

Ok………
Considered is if ur picked for the VP spot?
Who takes over in ur state
That seems to be why Cooper dropped out
So it appears to be Shapiro and Kelley…..
Does the Jewish factor cancel the East Coast consideration?
jamesb says
Why Roy Cooper Opted Out
“North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper opted not to be a candidate in Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate search, in part because of concerns that his Republican lieutenant governor would assume control when he travels out of state if he were selected,” the AP reports.
“Cooper withdrew before Harris formally began soliciting vetting material from potential vice presidents.”
jamesb says
New open Thread tomorrow…..
CG says
Now, you edited your own post, after the fact, to add “Carter/Mondale” and I have no idea what for.
Mondale was from the Midwest.
There are lots of maps of the US that can be found online.
CG says
If you ate making the Bloomberg analogy, I guess you might be saying that if the Arizona Republican Party had not lost its mine over the past decade, and was still a party that honored John McCain, Kelly could have run for Senate as a Republican. Instead, like Bloomberg in his Republican days, he only had an opening in the other party.
