Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel said Wednesday that the country had to apply “pressure, pressure and more pressure” to squeeze further concessions from Hamas in cease-fire negotiations, as the talks have shown little movement despite renewed hope for a deal earlier this month.
“As long as we keep pressuring them, Hamas will give up more and more” in the talks, Mr. Netanyahu said in a speech to Parliament, accusing his opponents at home of defeatism.
Israeli negotiators headed to Qatar last week for renewed meetings on a cease-fire deal that would also free the roughly 120 living and dead hostages held in Gaza. But no high-level meetings have been announced since, seeming to leave the negotiations at a standstill.
Many in Israel — particularly the families of hostages — have increasingly blamed Mr. Netanyahu for not doing enough to reach a deal to end the war. Hamas and other groups committed numerous war crimes and crimes against humanity against civilians during their attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, Human Rights Watch said in a 236-page report issued on Wednesday. It said that at least four armed groups took part in the assault, led by Hamas’s military wing, the Qassam Brigades. “The armed groups committed numerous violations of the laws of war that amount to war crimes, including attacks targeting civilians and civilian objects; willful killing of people in custody; cruel and other inhumane treatment; crimes involving sexual and gender-based violence; hostage-taking; mutilation and despoiling bodies; use of human shields; and pillage and looting,” the report said. It also called for the “urgent release of civilian hostages, an ongoing war crime.” In a statement, Hamas rejected the report as biased toward Israel.

The Israeli authorities have arrested three citizens on suspicion of “engaging in security-related activities under the direction of Iranian intelligence agents,” the police and the domestic intelligence agency, Shin Bet, said on Tuesday. One suspect communicated on the Telegram messaging app with a fake profile called “ANNA ELENA” and was asked to perform tasks in Israel, including planting money, hanging posters and sending threatening messages to Israeli homes, the statement said. That suspect, according to the statement, was offered money and recruited two other people. Iranian intelligence agencies use social media to “deceptively recruit Israelis for missions,” the statement said, adding that the aim was to undermine Israel’s war effort through psychological warfare.

Ultra-Orthodox youth on Tuesday protested news of impending draft notices, blocking a highway and clashing with the police, leading to nine arrests and leaving three officers injured, the authorities said in a statement. The Israeli military said that it would begin sending draft notices to the ultra-Orthodox on Sunday, after a Supreme Court order to begin calling up ultra-Orthodox students who had long been given a pass to study scripture.

The United States banned a former sergeant in the Israeli military and his family from entering U.S. territory, citing “his involvement in a gross violation of human rights, namely an extrajudicial killing in the West Bank,” the State Department said in a statement on Wednesday. In 2016, the man, Elor Azaria, was working as a military medic when he was documented on video shooting an immobilized Palestinian attacker in the head. He was prosecuted in Israel and sentenced to 18 months in prison but was paroled in 2018, after serving just nine months. The State Department’s latest move comes after it stepped up financial sanctions on extremist Jewish settlers and organizations in the occupied West Bank last week, amid a surge in settler violence against Palestinians…..
