Sen. Mike Lee and nine other GOP senators have vowed to not allow the confirmation of Biden administration political and judicial appointees as well as Democrat legislation not related to the safety of Americans.
After a Manhattan jury handed down a guilty verdict for former President Donald Trump on 34 felony counts, Lee and other senators circulated the letter on social media.
“Strongly worded statements are not enough,” Lee wrote on social media when he posted the letter. “Those who turned our judicial system into a political cudgel must be held accountable. We are no longer cooperating with any Democrat legislative priorities or nominations, and we invite all concerned Senators to join our stand.”
Sens. J.D. Vance, Tommy Tuberville, Eric Schmitt, Marsha Blackburn, Rick Scott, Roger Marshall and Marco Rubio also signed their names to the letter. Sens. Josh Hawley and Ron Johnson later joined.
Some of the signatories have close relationships with Trump — Lee has been floated as a possible attorney general and Vance, Rubio and Scott are rumored contenders as Trump’s running mate.
“The White House has made a mockery of the rule of law and fundamentally altered our politics in un-American ways,” said Lee and the other senators. “As a Senate Republican conference, we are unwilling to aid and abet this White House in its project to tear this country apart.”
Specifically, the letter outlines three sets of the actions the senators are vowing to not engage in due to the trial and its result.
The senators said they wouldn’t allow increases in funding for the administration that aren’t related to security — “or any appropriations bill which funds partisan lawfare,” the senators wrote. They also won’t confirm political and judicial appointees from the administration. And finally, the senators said they won’t “allow expedited consideration and passage of Democrat legislation or authorities that are not directly relevant to the safety of the American people.”
The Democrats have a slim majority in the Senate currently and if the senators remain committed to not allowing confirmations and blocking appropriations bills, business could slow down….

I understand what Romney was saying.Yes ,most of these type cases are settled in a plea ; however, in this case that probably was never possible due to Trumps claim that the entire prosecution was politically motivated.To accept any type of plea would have meant that there was validity to the accusations.
Prosecutors often demand that the defendant plea guilty to a charge in a plea type situation;however, in some cases they will accept a nolo contendere or no contest plea whereby the defendant admits no guilt ; however ,the judge will require the defendant acknowledge that such a plea is the legal equivalent of a guilty plea although the defendant does not admit to the charge.
There is also “ Alford “ plea whereby a defendant in effect pleads guilty while still asserting his innocence but conceding that the prosecution can produce enough evidence that he would likely be found guilty at trial.
In my view, Trump would never agree to any plea to anything and ,while we don’t know if there was ever any discussion of a plea ,the whole discussion is probably moot.

I also do not know what the point about “they are Republicans” mean. They are not pro-Trump. Two of them never have been and Christie has “seen the light.”
Still, there are a lot of people, from different political perspectives, who found confusion or troubling aspects regarding the prosecution of this case and the potential effect it might have on the election.
Cheerleaders on both sides do not care as much about the facts or the law or the greater ramifications and see no nuance whatsoever.

Based on the context, it seems clear that Senator Romney is putting it in terms of how this indictment has helped Trump politically in the campaign and might help him win the 2024 election, which Romney does not want to see happen. Many others have shared the same view.
I recently finished the book “Romney: A Reckoning” and I would highly recommend it. It shows a pretty unvarnished insight into him. It is clear that for better or worse, he has always been a fatalist when it comes to politics (besides also thinking that somehow he might not live a long life) He was pretty convinced he would every race entered. He considered dropping out of the race against Obama late in the game when things were looking bad because he was worried about letting people down due to his political weaknesses.
When it comes to Trump, he has stated consistently that while he dislikes the appeal he has and the hold he has on people, he has recognized it as it exists and has always recognized how formidable Trump is politically.
I didn’t read the book but from what I’ve heard Mitt thought about dropping out after the 47% video.
If he had quit Romney would have robbed us of the hilarious outburst from Karl Rove on Ekection Night when he insisted they were wrong about Ohio.

Elections are always choices. Some voters think Biden is a crook and Trump is not. Some think they both are.
To my disapproval, lot of people don’t care if either are though because for over 30 years now, they have been told that only the economy matters and if the case can be made that the economy is bad, that is what people believe. So, even if Trump is convicted 105 times, it will ultimately be a referendum on the job people think Biden is doing and if they think he is up to doing it in a second term.
