The question of whether Trump is immune from prosecution for certain acts while president could upend his criminal trials, and more immediately could throw a wrinkle into Thursday’s prime-time showdown on CNN, where his legal troubles are likely to be a key point of discussion.
Trump has signaled for months he is particularly focused on the immunity case, repeatedly posting on Truth Social that a ruling against him would hinder a president’s ability to do the job of chief executive without fear of being prosecuted.
Even if the ruling does not come up as a specific point of discussion in Thursday’s debate between Trump and Biden, it will undoubtedly cast a shadow on the event.

What is happening to Democrats this year is what happened to Republicans in 2016. We all thought Trump was doomed to lose and could not believe that people were capitulating and allowing it to happen. Hillary was such a bad candidate he still won.
Now, Trump is indeed a “bad” candidate but the dynamics are very different and it is hard to see how Biden changes the perceptions about him.
The people in the D party who truly do know better are leery from speaking out too publicly because they do not want to run afoul of the activists or the base, who simply want to “own” the other side and never admit that anything the other side says has ever been true. These Democrats are concluding that they will lose in 2024 now at the Presidential level, but then will be able to turn the page for future elections.

Again, Biden’s numbers were bad, very bad. They have gotten slightly worse. It is hard to get much lower than they are right now. People that were going to vote for Biden before the debate are likely to stay home now.
Also, as has been pointed out, in swing states, Biden and Democrats have been running ads in heavy rotation defending Biden and attacking Trump, and yet the race was still where it was.
Now, Trump and Republicans are going to start spending money in those markets for the first time. That is going to make things worse for Biden. Compounding that, big Biden donors are probably going to abandon him.
This should be Defcon 1 for Democrats and the need to get Biden out of the race in order to do whatever is necessary to change the trajectory.. Republicans have not been in a better position for a Presidential race in July in 40 years.
What does “close” mean?
Trump may win the popular vote by something like 46-44. That will “look close” but it probably going to equate to over 300 EV and a Senate and House majority for Republicans.

Biden is fighting for himself, not the country. Obviously, Democrats in safe districts, who are going to be reelected, are not that worried about Trump being President. They will have bright futures in the party and will be able to raise a lot of money being opposed to Trump, once he is back in office.
Can anybody who thinks Biden should stay on seriously suggest he is going to be able to effectively serve as President until 2029? Of course not. Thus, everything about the reelection campaign is a fraud. But since Trump is so bad, many people are willing to overlook that, even though they should not.
Keeping Biden on the ballot almost certainly means Trump wins. Democrats are simply giving up on stopping Trump. They are going to focus on the House races now, if they stick with this path.
I am still giving July 19 as the day Biden ends his murder-suicide pact with his party and drops out. He should have dropped out the day after the debate. Every day since has been a day going backwards.
The Republican convention is next month and they will not even need to talk about Trump. They will focus on Biden and show clip after clip on primetime television of the debate and other Biden moments on video. Some of which will be accurate and others will be manipulated, but they will be effective.
Americans will be more scared of Biden being in office than Trump being in office. Nobody wants to reelect Biden thinking he will die in office. Americans would find that appropriately sad. Frankly, if Trump is in office and dies, there would be a lot less sadness.

Having returned from my annual 10 day sojourn in the Carribean where I purposefully refrain from following the travails of the outside world,I find that the Biden campaign has spiraling downward after a horrendous debate performance.
As I have reiterated for well over six months now,I have had a deep foreboding as to this whole ill advised second term campaign. I say this as one who likes Joe Biden I think he has done a good job as President. However,it has been quite obvious to me that he was a man in decline as he entered his Eighties.Why this has seemingly been a surprise to some is beyond me. The man is old .He is not going to get “ better.”There is little chance in him completing another four year term.He should have retired gracefully.
The effect among this little group is noted.I unusually find myself in unusual agreement with CG.Scott has moved on ,although I would suggest to my online friend ,with whom I share his desire to help save democracy , that Joe Biden is no longer capable of being the instrument thereof.Then there is our host who has retreated into an unprecedented silence posting comments wise as he is predictably proven wrong again .(Is he ever “ right” about anything?)
So what comes next?
Biden says he’s not withdrawing no matter what others say while the rest of us await a thoroughly predictable series of gaffes, forgetfulness, and other examples of the infirmities of age that we know are coming.
Democrats are now talking about the inevitability of Kamala Harris as a replacement candidate while even Bidens erstwhile supporter SC Congressman Jim Clyburn,himself an aging relic, says maybe we need a mini primary.That is if Biden withdraws ,which he claims to not be contemplating ,as daily, new calls for exactly that emanate from his fellow party members.
What is called for is a group composed of Schumer, Jeffries, several other veteran Congresspeople,and possibly other prominent Democrats to visit the White House and tell the President that it is time for an act of statesmanship and for him to exit the scene.
Will what follows be messy? Undoubtedly .However,assuming the President acquiesces,at least there will be some chance of turning back the authoritarian Republican Party and its criminal leader.
Joe Biden is no longer capable of filling that role.

You know things are bad when the most voluble defender here of a Biden second term candidacy doesn’t directly comment on my rather lengthy post( in the past such would have attracted numerous critical rejoinders) but instead announces that he will “ continue to be a bit quiet here” and that “ if” Biden stays he will vote for him.
An abject and complete concession that the Biden campaign is going nowhere.
Well Jack, it may not be going anywhere because the President doesn’t want it to go anywhere. This is up to Joe Biden and I hope he makes the right call for himself and the Nation.
So glad that I checked in today. Haven’t felt like participating because both Jack and Scott have seemed to be missing and our host still hasn’t explained why he would give someone here my personal contact information. A very stupid thing to do.
Joe has been the best President of our lifetimes. The most productive man to sit in that chair since FDR (LBJ gets points off for Vietnam) going up against the most corrupt singularly disgusting human being to set foot in the Oval Office since Andrew Jackson.
That the President would be caught up in the media storm right now is unfortunate for the Nation as we are all faced with an unprecedented attack on our democracy (you remember the one that started on January 6, 2021?).
A few things and then I need to get back to work. First, as we have seen now in the UK and today in France, voters are smart and will, in the end, do the right thing by “voting strategically” for the right outcome. Very much like what happened in 2020 on Super Tuesday when the Democratic electorate came together to essentially give Biden the Democratic nomination and to beat Sanders. We knew Joe had the best chance of beating Trump there and that was a do or die election — today the situation is even more dire. Second, it appears to me that some folks here are enjoying the difficulties presented by the President’s uneven debate performance rather than be concerned that this might allow Trump to return to office. Our Uber-Republican Corey Gross appears to be giddy at the prospect. But I do have a question for the four or five people who actually participate here. If Joe Biden should step down as a candidate then shouldn’t a convicted felon, sexual predator, and all time champion liar withdraw too? It makes me wonder if folks really understand what’s on the line for us.
Finally, it’s just too obvious to state, but I will. We need to wait, and if Joe does go it needs to be orchestrated to the heavens is such a way as to step all over the Republican Convention (after their VP nomination). Democrats of course, will need to stop acting like pearl clutchers and get behind whoever Joe designates (I think we all know who that is, and I have known her for a good twenty years and she’s a great lady) and then the age factor would be on the other fat foot. A big task, but very doable because the dynamics of this election still favor the Democrats.

I am glad jack is well. I wondered if he was on a cruise. I know it must be difficult to have to admit agreeing with me on this matter, but he has expressed this view about concerns about Biden’s electability before.
We may never hear from Scott again. I think he is genuinely heartbroken about this and what is going on with his party. I can sincerely understand.
This is going to be a pretty monumental week in American political history. I maintain that Biden will be out of the race before the end of Friday, July 19. Since he seems to be in absolute denial about his predicament and those closest to him seem to want him to cling on to power, it is going to get quite messy and ugly, at least behind the scenes. Ultimately though, Democrats will realize they have no choice. Biden will either give in, or there will be some sort of outright rebellion at the convention, with the outcome of that unknown, and there are already going to be enough problems associated with that convention.
If beating Trump is truly as important as people say it is, and I think it is, then there is no other option. The enablers of Biden staying in the race have to stop acting like MAGA cultists. This should not be about one man’s ego or refusing to change course, because the other side will take some sense of glee and satisfaction into that. The future of America and the world is too important to merely want to “own” the other party. Democrats need to put their party ahead of Biden, but most importantly, put the country above anything else. The idea that Biden should be President until January 20, 2029 is just ludicrous, both for him personally, and the country.
Yeah, Biden has to go, and it must be Kamala Harris. I had considered his Primary opponents this time more because of Israel/Palestine than age stuff, but ultimately acquiesced to voting for him in Georgia’s Primary after the State of the Union. Frankly, until the debate, I was willing to view Biden as nothing less than a virile Love God and a savant behind the scenes who could work twenty/thirty-somethings like myself into a heart attack.
I watched that debate at a Watch Party of the county Democrats. Sans myself and the guy who invited me, everyone claimed Biden won. He and I both were horrified at how badly it had gone, and the county party was shutting down the electronics about 5 minutes after it had ended. Kool aid drinking, but also hardly celebratory. But more incriminating than his debate performance was Carl Bernstein’s reporting on the vast cover up of Biden’s deteriorating condition. At this point, it has gone beyond him needing to drop out and veered into 25th Amendment territory. The state of the race has gotten so bad for Democrats that one of his swing state trips might as well involve challenging Trump to a round of golf at his club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
And you know it’s bad when our Blue MAGA boy in the bubble Keith is not here to lay on the gish gallop and tell us we did not see what we saw. He probably has to do more than his usual day job of drunkenly dialing a phone to clean that mess up.
I’d suggested to James days ago that Joe and Jill Biden, to convince the nation of his continued abilities, need to recreate the iconic 1980 Rolling Stone magazine cover featuring John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Because no one has ever seen a more limber eighty-something.
CG might try getting this into his Lincoln Project circles, then they get it to Wilmington and it becomes reality. But even that might not be enough to right the ship.

I agree with jack, and contrary to popular opinion here, it is not something that gives me “glee.” The popular vote margin for Trump might be fairly small, but the Electoral College would not, under this scenario.
I am sticking by a “prediction” that Biden is out on or before July 19, but clearly, like the way MAGA has taken over the Republican Party, there are a lot of “lemmings” among Democrats, prepared to go over the cliff, simply because they want to “own the right.”
I’ve derived considerable enjoyment from the old Haloscan/P1 threads CG has posted, plus the ones I found in my digging on that Wayback Machine feature. I’m fortunate much of my worst contributions appear to have been lost to history, though the stuff I posted that still survives is a whole lot of nothing special and a really good reason to not let teens post on news website comments sections. One of the first books I want to write is about my 2008-2016 days as an online shitposter and the long crawl back from those depths.
I find myself agreeing a lot with GOPBS(sans the hard egded anti Jewish sentiments, he saw the GOP as a party devoid of moral compass), Pretorian, Adam R, and Godless Communist. I learn a lot from their astute observations and the meat on those policy bones. Also astonishing to me how CG became this strident anti Trump guy when he was fully tricked out to the Bush family, Mittens, El Rushbo, and the Fox gaggle. Proves my belief that the only difference between MAGA Republicans and Never Trump Conservatives is who they want in charge of the Gulags.

I am not going to waste too much time responding to this. Perhaps, as I find more haloscan archives as I go along (only up to mid May of 2008 so far), I will post them here.
Sort of surprising to hear that Kevin/GOPBS has a fan all these years later. He was pretty horrific all those years ago, not to mention all the anti-Semitic emails he took it upon himself to send me for years. I suspect that the specific emailed death threats I received in 2008 were from him also. It is pretty hard to separate anything he would say on that blog from his virulent hatred of Jews. Some on the Far Left today clearly share that viewpoint though.
Next, I think a big problem is that for so many years people on the left would talk about the Bushes or McCain or Romney and say things like “they want to put people in gulags” Then, Trump came along and they said the same thing, and not a lot of people believed them or were willing to listen. Put it up to the Calling Wolf phenomenon. Continuing to insist that the pre-Trump Republican establishment was pro-gulag is either trolling from nostalgic internet troll (which I suspect) or just dumb.
I support what he did to you about as much as I support James giving out Keith’s personal information, which is none at all. It also leads me to a new thought that comments sections and wannabe tabloid blogs like this one don’t draw in the best people, and I must include myself in that. Probably the only thing I’m nostalgic for is the simpler times. There’s a lot of regrets over the myriad missed opportunities of my misbegotten youth that I have to live with and make up for in the present day.
But I’m sorry, the last Republican nominee I’d have actually supported was Evans Hughes in 1916. They’ve been a morally and idea-wise bereft organization since the days of the Hoovervilles. McCain is the only one for whom I even approach the level of “respect.” The only change in their policies over the last hundred plus years is making racial and sexual bigotry front and center in a subjugationist’s attempt to win white voters after minority communities and women started drifting to the Democrats during FDR’s Presidency. Tell me, which party was seriously looking at Charles Lindbergh in 1940? And no whataboutisms about Huey “Kingfish” Long.

If you’re going to make the mistake of running him, focus on the actual record of accomplishments and the solid people surrounding him who actually make key decisions, not fairytale BS. As if average voter needed another reason to think the parties are the same. For a change, it’s the most solid one yet. Democrats definitely under performed in 2016. There were polls showing a fairly close race in many states and a bunch of people, myself included, thought Hillary was further ahead. She was not.

My view of America is not the most sanguine. Facts and observed reality uniformly prefer Democrats, but politics is not governed by facts and observed reality. And perception, the ruler of the roost, is a finicky thing. In landslide scenarios, the Democrats have a much lower floor than the Republicans(see 1972, 1980, and 1984 versus 1992, 1996, and 2008). 24 versus 128 at current count.

I’m glad to hear from Jack and Keith. I have thoughts on who should lead the Democratic ticket–the only thing that will save us from a dictatorship under Trump and Project 2025. My thoughts do not change how I feel about the two men that no one listens to going on for way too much bandwidth on here so I’ll just leave it at that. All I’ll say is that one at least is serious enough to vote for the ricket to prevention that will fascism this fall. The other writes better but is somehow more clueless.

During the Cold War, there was a statement some on the left would use that went “Better Red than Dead.” Others countered with “Better Dead than Red.”
Things like this always make me think of Ronald Reagan’s famous speech in 1964 in which he quoted Alexander Hamilton.

CG actually indulged himself on his blog, saying Democrats ideally should coronate Mitt Romney in place of Biden. That coronation would yield a coronary from the base, though the subsequent reinvention of Mitt as a fellow Social Justice Warrior and the political Grandfather of Greta Thunberg would be fun to watch.
The desire to return to a party that never was will never fail to amuse me(“Family values! Decency, good sir! Meanwhile, I’m banging the maid and blackmailing college students at a newspaper.”). I have a mother he would love. Utter delusion, though at least they’re not backing Venerable Don(or VD for short). And for one of them, no matter how diminished Biden is, he’s still better than Amateur Hour.
The reference to Tom Petty(on whose Sirius/XM station I actually did a 30 minute DJ segment last month) at the end of the last article was cool, though. As Biden and Trump both well know, it IS good to be King, whatever it pays.
A conciliatory note, though. I do think CG should compile all of his blog posts and release it as a full length book/rolling anthology about the state of politics this century, and as some attempt at crafting a post-Trump Republican “agenda.” Maybe he could get the Texan to write the bombastic foreword and call James bad names in an “audition” to get back on the CG Politics comments section.
