It’s still early in the delegate race: The Associated Press’ current estimates show Trump with 63 delegates and Haley with 17 — both miles away from the 1,215 needed to clinch the nomination.
Even if he wins all 50 of South Carolina’s delegates, it would put Trump only 9 percent of the way to becoming the presumptive nominee. But the delegates are about to pile up in a hurry as the crush of primaries and caucuses begin, starting next week and headed into Super Tuesday 10 days from today.
A top Trump campaign official told me this week he expects Trump to reach a majority of delegates on either March 12 or March 19. The former date would probably require Haley to end her candidacy before Super Tuesday — but the latter is probable, even if she continues running through that date….
