But with those cases in limbo, state prosecutors in Manhattan are gearing up as though they will be the first to try the former president on criminal charges — for covering up a potential sex scandal.
The Manhattan district attorney’s office has begun to approach witnesses to prepare them for trial, including Michael D. Cohen, Mr. Trump’s former fixer, according to people with knowledge of the matter. He and at least two others involved in buying a porn star’s silence about her story of a tryst with Mr. Trump are expected to meet with prosecutors in the coming weeks.
With the potential trial drawing near, the district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, has also added one of his most experienced trial lawyers to the team assigned to prosecute Mr. Trump.
And in recent public appearances, Mr. Bragg has presented the loftiest possible conception of the case, casting it as a clear-cut instance of election interference, in which a candidate defrauded the American people to win the White House in 2016. Mr. Trump did so, the district attorney argues, by concealing an illegal payoff to the porn star, thus hiding damaging information from voters just days before they headed to the polls.
“The case — the core of it — is not money for sex,” Mr. Bragg said in a radio interview last month, objecting to news outlets’ longstanding characterization of it as a hush-money case. “We would say it’s about conspiring to corrupt a presidential election and then lying in New York business records to cover it up. That’s the heart of the case.”
With this rebranding, Mr. Bragg is trying to amplify the importance of his charges and draw a parallel with the highly consequential federal case in Washington, D.C., in which Mr. Trump is accused of seeking to overturn the 2020 election. That trial is scheduled to begin on March 4, three weeks before Mr. Bragg’s case, but appeals could push it into late spring or summer….

I saw the piece on TRump’s numbers jumping UP after Bragg’s indictment…..
I do NOT buy that a conviction would assure Trump a second term….
That’s not the point. There is unlikely to ever be a conviction in the New York case though, and Bragg probably realizes that. He went ahead last year for a reason and the person who has benefited most has been Trump. Perhaps, that was the intent.
Trump’s numbers jumped up among Republicans after the indictment.
I still don’t think his indictment helps him in a general election. Republicans don’t care how horrible their rapist racist nominee to be is. He could show up in full Nazi regalia and Tim Scott would still coo “Because I just love you so much!”.

Probably won’t even go to trial in NY. A conviction could be hard to hold up on appeal. In any event, it wouldn’t happen before the election. He has not been found guilty on criminal charges. You are mixing Big Apples and oranges.
Bottom line is Alvin Bragg’s charges have hurt all the other more legitimate efforts to hold Trump legally responsible for things he has done.

Yes, assuming he doesn’t win in 2024, but this may not be one of them. It could get thrown out on legal grounds. I’m not the resident attorney here though.

I don’t pretend to be a legal scholar .
I was a middling now semi retired attorney ,who mostly handled criminal cases and some civil matters, but it doesn’t take a scholar to see that none of these cases are slam dunks. All have various problems .
The Georgia case is in my opinion the strongest due to the audios of Trump in his own voice pressuring the S of S to do his bidding.The Florida case would seem strong but Trump has a sympathetic Judge.
Jack Smiths cases involve some novel legal theories ,always dangerous terrain and the New York. Are is a real stretch in my view.
Then there’s the whole matter of whether any of them will even come to trial before the election.

The case will be tried with a NYC jury and they will NOT be sympathetic to Trump….
