He won’t be given that authority…
And even if was given that ?
He couldn’t….
He wouldn’t…..
But he thinks he can politically turn this around on Republicans….
But such a move would cost him support from Democrats and coulkd make him appear to be FOLLOWING Trump’s immigration policy, something he CANNOT afford….
Biden maybe also scared about the social media threats about a possible ‘civil war’ between Texas law enforcement and US Troops….
And?
He sorely wants to get aid to the Ukraine in its battle against Russia and to other countries like Israel and Taiwan…
Which is something House Republicans and Trump himself ARE using to leverage the Democratic President with 9 months until Presidential Election…..
Trump DID ‘shut down ‘ the Southern and Northern Border’s due to the pandemic, only allowing commerical traffic…
Trump ALSO instituded crackdowns on migrants already in America…..(Resulting in family seperations and other abuses)
Some of those actions where deemed illegal by Federal Courts…
Some feel the Covid reason was a excuse by Trump aide Stephen Miller , who is back at trying to do exactly the same thru House Republicans…
President Biden said Friday that he would use new emergency authorities to “shut down the border when it becomes overwhelmed” if Congress passes a bipartisan immigration plan that the Senate has been negotiating.
In a lengthy statement Friday, Biden praised the bipartisan border deal senators have been negotiating, calling it “the toughest and fairest set of reforms to secure the border we’ve ever had in our country.”
“It would give me, as President, a new emergency authority to shut down the border when it becomes overwhelmed,” he said. “And if given that authority, I would use it the day I sign the bill into law.”
…
“For too long, we all know the border’s been broken,” Biden said in his statement. “It’s long past time to fix it.”
In a political atmosphere in which former president Donald Trump and top Republicans have hammered Biden over the influx of millions of migrants into the country, the president’s willingness — and apparent eagerness — to pursue a “shut down” at the border marked a major departure from traditional Democratic rhetoric on migration. It was also a reversal for Biden, who came into office determined to undo much of Trump’s immigration policies and implement what he called “humane and orderly” systems for processing desperate people fleeing troubled homelands….
…
Biden’s allies have acknowledged the difficult political quandary the president faces on immigration, an area where he faces some of his worst approval ratings.
Some have pointed to the president’s past executive actions cracking down on asylum, expediting removals of migrants and implementing other restrictions as a sign that he is willing to take the heat from parts of his liberal base to solve the problem.
Still, the surge of migrants from dozens of nations has at times overwhelmed border agents and images of large numbers of migrants flowing into the country have become a political headache for the administration….
Update….
The Senate has a deal that may NOT be ok for the House Republicans , no matter what….
Senate negotiators have agreed to empower the US to significantly restrict illegal migrant crossings at the southern border, according to sources familiar with the matter, a move aimed at ending the migrant surge that has overrun federal authorities over the past several months.
The Senate deal, which is expected to be unveiled as soon as next week, would also speed up the asylum process to consider cases within six months – compared with the current system, under which it could take up to 10 years for asylum seekers.
The details provide a new window into high-profile negotiations that have been going on for months – as Senate leaders hold out hope they can attach the deal to aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan as domestic and international crises loom. The plan would also put pressure on Republicans to decide whether to greenlight these new authorities or reject the plan as former President Donald Trump has urged the GOP to defeat anything short of what he calls a “perfect” bill.
President Joe Biden, in a rare statement on ongoing congressional negotiations, said the deal that Senate negotiators have worked toward is both tough and fair…..
Note…
Homeland Security budget money is also involved in this….

He has a lot of authority to sidestep Congress, especially since Donald Trump seems hellbent on wanting the problem to get worse just to help himself and his allies in Congress are afraid of him.
Biden can put back into place Executive Orders for the Remain in Mexico policy and to end Catch and Release. These are both things that were in place before he became President and he rescinded, along with getting rid of the Covid restrictions at the border. Since then, the crisis there has exploded. None of this is good for people who have been in America and the decent desperate people who want to come here, and then find themselves in a horrible situation as well. He absolutely should NOT rescind a family separation policy. That policy was cruel and horrific, but the other two appear to be necessary under these emergency circumstances.
If he were to do this, there are elements of the base that would throw a fit and promise not to vote for Biden, but most likely they will have gotten over those temper tantrums by November. If he were to do these things now, he would absolutely improve his chances of winning in November (for better or worse for America overall) but above all else, keeping Trump out of power.

He IS right where he was as VP with President Obama….
Obama took a beat down on stiffing border enforcement from Hispanics AND Republicans who KEEP beating Democrats with the subject a decade later…….
More Here….

Democrats barely raised their voice to complain about deportation policies over Obama. If people were upset, they were willing to overlook it. Both parties keep changing though. Everyone wants to “own” the other tribe, and not give an inch to anyone, so problems are getting worse.
Nonetheless, far. far, far more people are pouring across the border (*some* who are carrying extremely deadly drugs) now than ever were under Obama or Trump. So, a President has to show leadership on this issue now.

Obama and his VP Biden DID get grief on the Obama immigration crackdown…….
Obama thought it would get GOPer’s off his back…
NOPE
A decade later Republicans don’t remember anything except that they CAN keep beating Democrats with the issue

I have another post on this matter that is not appearing. Perhaps it will remain “hidden” or will show up under a different handle with CG at the bottom of the comments.

Gonna be a LOT of surprised people when he gets convicted for his first felonies….
