A former Governor of South Carolina NOT saying the Amwerican Civil War was about slavery IS an issue….
“I want to nip it in the bud. Yes, we know the Civil War was about slavery. But more than that, what’s the lesson in all this?” she added. That freedom matters. And individual rights and liberties matter for all people. That’s the blessing of America. That was a stain on America when we had slavery. But what we want is never relive it. Never let anyone take those freedoms away again.”
Scholars agree slavery was the main driver of the Civil War. But Haley, a former U.N. ambassador and South Carolina governor, did not mention it in a lengthy exchange Wednesday evening….
….
“What was the cause of the United States Civil War?” the man asked Haley on Wednesday evening in Berlin, N.H.
She replied, “Well, don’t come with an easy question.” Then she proceeded to answer.
“I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run, the freedoms and what people could and couldn’t do,” Haley said….
…
And the second place 2024 Republican Presidential sweepstakes contender took a beat down….
Haley said it “always” comes down to the role of government, telling the crowd, “We need to have capitalism, we need to have economic freedom.”
The voter responded it was “astonishing” that she did not mention slavery while discussing the Civil War.
“What do you want me to say about slavery?” she asked.
“You answered my question. Thank you,” the voter responded.
The speed with which Haley moved to correct her remarks indicated their danger to her campaign. Haley has been closing in on former President Trump in polls of New Hampshire, and criticism of her earlier remarks was leading cable newscasts and making headlines….
…
Republicans and Democrats had slammed Haley’s initial Civil War comments, with Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), a supporter of Trump, writing on X, formerly Twitter, that the answer was “slavery, period.” Donalds said Haley’s comments wouldn’t ultimately matter because Trump would be the GOP presidential nominee.
Fellow White House hopeful, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s campaign, posted the video of Haley online with the word, “Yikes.”
President Biden reposted a video of the exchange, writing “It was about slavery.”…

It Was About Slavery
Nikki Haley was asked last night by a voter about the reason for the Civil War and she didn’t mention slavery in her response.
Of course, the AP notes that South Carolina’s Ordinance of Secession — the 1860 proclamation by the state government outlining its reasons for seceding from the Union — mentions slavery in its opening sentence.
Playbook: “You can complexify it all you want, but any answer rooted in reality must acknowledge that the correct answer is: slavery. It was the cornerstone upon which the Confederacy was built. States’ rights? Yes, inasmuch as states wanted the right to allow human beings to be owned as property. (We can’t believe we need to say this in 2023.)”

Actually I doubt if this will hurt Nikki that much.
I don’t think she has much chance knocking off Trump any way and Todays Republicans don’t care about the civil war stuff.

Quote of the Day
“She’s smart and she knows better. And she didn’t say it because she’s a racist — because she’s not. I know her well and I don’t believe Nikki has a racist bone in her body… The reason she did it is just as bad, if not worse, and should make everybody concerned about her candidacy: She did it because she’s unwilling to offend anyone by telling the truth.”
