The Economist: “Picture it: two of America’s most powerful governors take the debate stage. One is sporting copious amounts of hair gel. The other may, or may not, be wearing lifted boots to appear taller. Gavin Newsom, the Democratic governor of California, and Ron DeSantis, his Republican counterpart in Florida, spend 90 minutes trying to convince viewers that their own state represents the very best of America, and that their relative youth and respective flavor of crusading politics are just what the country needs. Donald Trump is heckling both men in ALL CAPS on Truth Social, from his armchair at Mar-a-Lago, having decided not to seek a second term. Joe Biden is looking forward to retirement, secure in the belief that his presidency was a bridge to the next generation. Sean Hannity, of Fox News, does a passable impression of a neutral moderator.”

“In another universe this could have been a prime-time debate during the 2024 presidential campaign. Instead, Messrs DeSantis and Newsom will face off on Fox News on November 30th for reasons unclear even to the governors themselves.”

  7. If Biden keeps aiding and abetting the slaughter of innocent Palestinians, his candidacy is almost as much a joke as Dean Phillips and RFK Jr.

    Paid hackery notwithstanding, we need any manner of new Democratic leadership with basic common sense and who can actually win against Trump. Not monumental egos with a serially outdated view of the world.

        • Absolutely. They need to let the voters have their say. But they only do this because they know Biden will underperform against Marianne Williamson on the heels of young voters, Muslims, and Arab American voters turning on him over Israel.

          Theyre trying to not let a Prinary happen, and Biden’s ego is too big to step aside. So Williamson, as the only actual serious challenger(Dean Phillips and Cenk Uygur don’t count), may see her odds of nomination spike to 10%, versus Biden/Harris at 90%.

          *cue the paid actors throwing a temper tantrum like we saw earlier*

  8. Sorry SE. Marianne Williamson has absolute zero.chsnce ar the nomination. That is truth today, next week, next month and next summer.

    • Biden(or Harris) likely wins the nomination. What unfolds in almost a year is anyone’s guess. I’ve been bullish before, but the new headlines in lieu of the Israel fracas are scary and lead me to cast around for a better option going into a war with Trump. I’m tempted to swing the hours long trip to Clemson University in Upstate SC to see her campaign event there this Tuesday. How my broke ass will do it in the hours before my paycheck lands is anyone’s guess.

      A more conciliatory sentiment I feel compelled to state is I don’t think of you or James as people I single out for derision in upthread comments. I don’t agree with both your more center of the party perspectives, but I don’t see the aggrieved vitriol I see from certain others. So there’s that. The most I realistically expect from Williamson is a Eugene McCarthy style challenge that sets in motion more viable options putting their names into the running.

        • For the record, compare and contrast the predictions of myself and the above comment poster from the last year.

          Last and this year, fairly bullish predictions from me. Had Democrats holding both chambers, while above poster was predicting a relatively easy loss of the Senate and a 40 seat loss in the House. Ultimately only lost the House, and even that was by a slender margin. Don’t remember his predictions for this year, though I’m sure they were a bag of sour skittles. Again, more bullish than I should have been(Mississippi was never going to happen for us), but more right than the average predictors were predicting, just like the year before. Because I actually factor in what I observe across the country and try to give an unsparing and eagle eyed analysis(Versus a decade ago when I put on rose tinted glasses and gave Republicans everything and the moon).

          His response to getting his doom and gloom predictions wrong? Like a good Republican, just move along to being wrong about the next thing. And Keith? Just a typical consultant sitting on his drunk ass all day dialing a phone(Like a coworker of mine in one of his other jobs, but my coworker has no illusions about changing the world and saving democracy). No real world impact there, to put it charitably.

                • There are topics where I consider myself to the Right of Jack. Does that turn Mitt Romney (often-disclaimed if even acknowledged grandfather of Obamacare) into an ultra-progressive, revolutionary Bolshevik member of the Squad?

                  • Everyone has their principles. Truthfully, I never have been sharp enough to define that term “bolshevik.”

                    I’ve gotten/am on the road to getting unnecessarily personal here, and I am going to take a break.

    • And contrary to the moderators repeated claims that the Trump Fever will “fade,” establishment Republicans are lining up behind her Senate bid and talking up how she has “toned down” the rough edges.

      She didn’t even have the advantage of establishment backing in her Governor Primary. And if that linked article represents “toning it down,” Arizona will be in for another high stakes doozy of a race.

            • Republicans(namely AG Paxton) basically admitted they stole the 2020 election from Biden in that state. With Presidential turnout and hopefully Harris as the candidate, ’24 may finally be the year we flip Texas.

        • Though you do have a point on the Senate potentially going GQP. Tester and Brown should win and we should hold Arizona, but Nevada is looking like a potentially weak spot for us. Trump up 11 in recent polls(Too high, 4 or 5 is a more realistic number), a new Republican Governor, and their Democratic Senator only winning by around 1,000 votes over a MAGA nutjob does not inspire a lot of hope.

  12. To quote one of our late blog posters, “I am rooting for all Democrats to succeed.” I want Biden to do better where he can, Harris to be ready to take charge when it’s necessary, and Williamson to have a fair shot if all else goes to shit in the halls of the establishment.

    I suppose it helps I’m the youngest, most clear eyed person on here, versus the aged quartet of Shaggy, Scooby, and the Gutter Twins. Though DSD(Scooby) actually provides decent commentary in his occasional posts.

      Why as we speak ,in the bowels of the White House ,aides to the President are plotting nefariously how to stop the Williamson steamroller that is threatening to derail Biden renomination on the eighty second ballot!

      I stay with the view that Trump LOSES AGAIN if he can’t keep his act together for another 11 months….

      That looks VERY doubtful right now…

  18. North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum has dropped out of the Presidential race.

    His state has fewer residents than your average suburban American county. It should be no surprise that almost no one thought the Governor of a state that shouldn’t even exist should be President.

    • Then (as a Rhode Islander) I ask, no allowable presidents or vice presidents from, say, Delaware, Hawaii, Vermont or Wyoming?

      [The only Rhode Islanders to run on a national ticket that I know of were vice-presidential candidates for the Prohibition Party in 1900 and the ex-Henry=Wallace Progressives in 1952.]

      If only a celebrated super-Democratic contributor to Politics1 could see this; what would he say?

    Of course he criticizes Biden for failing to mourn Kissimger in a way he feels is proper.

    The truth is he was a war member who needlessly caused death and destruction in SE Asia. Cambodian kids today are still heing maimed by the re.nani g landmines left from his pointless extension of a failed war from Vietnam.

    I don’t celebrate that Kissimger finally met the maker he has to answer to. But I sure as hell don’t think he deserves ANYTHING Biden did to acknowledge his death.

    It doesn’t take much analysis to realize what CG is really lashing out at. It’s not that Kissimger died. It’s the passing of “his” Republican Party.

    It’s gone. And it”s not coming.back. Henry being lowered into the ground at 100 years of age is just another symbol of that.
