Jim Jordan Never really had a chance….
Democrats would NOT have been able to work with him…..
House Republicans on Wednesday nominated Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) to be the next Speaker, sending his candidacy to the House floor following Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) stunning ouster last week, multiple lawmakers told The Hill.
Scalise secured the nomination 113-99 in a closed-door GOP conference meeting, defeating House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) in a close race that did not have a clear front-runner heading into the internal vote.
Scalise will now take his candidacy to the House floor, where he will be up against House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), who Democrats nominated for Speaker on Tuesday night…..
Update….
Some Republicans are saying ‘Not so Fast’….
I’m told by a person involved in the proceedings that the House will recess and not meet at 3 p.m. to hold a floor vote.
The move to recess comes as it became clear that Scalise would not have the votes to win the gavel on the House floor today, and members complaining of a rushed process. Meanwhile, Jordan in a private meeting with Scalise offered to give a nominating speech on his behalf, according to his spokesman. But that gesture did not seem to move a number of Republicans from across the political spectrum who said they would not vote for Scalise on the floor….

No vote will be held today.
This seems far from over. What I am sensing is that some McCarthy loyalists really have something against Scalise.

They DO …..
But Jordan is a non starter

Scalise just withdrew from the race.
This headline joins the January 6th rear view mirror comment in the history of tone deafness and ignorance.

Jim Jordan Gets Behind Steve Scalise
Rep. Jim Jordan offered to nominate Rep. Steve Scalise on the House floor, Punchbowl News reports.
In the House Republican Conference vote earlier today, 10 members voted for someone other than Scalise or Jordan.
Scalise can only afford to lose four Republican votes on the House floor.
CNN notes some conservative members are still opposed to Scalise, with one member saying he will “never” get the 217 votes he needs.

So, it’s “not over.”
Right now, there are at least four Republicans who will note vote for Scalise on the floor. They are trying to get that resolved.
Lawler of NY, representing a Biden district, seems pissed at the idea of Scalise winning, seemingly out of some sort of grudge on behalf of McCarthy.
MTG is saying that she is too “concerned” for Scalise’s sake because he has cancer.
If he doesnt have the votes, I do not think you can expect any Democrats to actually vote for Scalise.
If it fails one time, perhaps the prudent thing for Democrats to do, considering the current international emergencies, would be to just not vote in the next round, in order to lower the threshold and get it over with so Congress can get back to work,
jamesb says
Well maybe they can vote in Jeffries?
CG says
There is zero chance of that in 2023.
jamesb says
Jeffries has a More Than 50% chance that he WILL BE the US HOUSE SPEAKER on Jan. 1 2024

Trump Not Expected to Help Scalise in Speaker Bid
“House Majority Leader Steve Scalise should not expect any help from Donald Trump in his bid to become speaker of the House,” sources tell The Messenger.
“Scalise hasn’t been loyal enough to the former president and 2024 presidential frontrunner, so he shouldn’t count on Trump to help woo enough GOP holdouts — who include Trump allies — to push him over the finish line, they say.”
Washington Post: Republicans fail to coalesce around speaker choice, leaving House in limbo.
jamesb says
Well?
U might be right CG?
Several senior Republicans see little path to 217 votes, after Scalise won just 113 votes in GOP conference, which includes three delegates who don’t have a vote on the House floor. Making up that deficit is tough and several have come out against him. He can only lose four Rs

Scalise needs to make a deal with Democrats?????

Seriously?
The House Republicans ARE FUCKED UP…..
They REALLY seem to want a collapse of the American government……

Day one with their nominee and no vote…these people really can’t get their shit together…if the country wasn’t so angry about immigrants and inflation I would agree with you 100 percent James that Jeffries has at least a 50% chance of being speaker in 2025 not 2024…but those two issues are a major problem…and the Republicans are able to thrive in local and state elections with the chaos, just not a presidential/national election…and then not by that much…
I can’t wait to see what these numbskulls do…I am going to say McCarthy somehow gets back in…maybe he makes a deal with democrats for their support, Jordan and Scalise won’t deal with Democrats…no other adult in the room can take the speakership
bdog says
And what is really fucked up…all this time wasting, we got budgets to write in about 30 days now…these fucking guys are horrible…

For the record, I believe Jeffries has a better than 50 percent chance of becoming Speaker on January 3, 2025.
However, the date presented was January 1, 2024.
Now, I will overlook the specific date in January because I do not believe james has ever been accused of understanding what is the Constitution. The year is pretty important though to his “prediction.”
jamesb says
Ok …….
Democrats would have to get say 10 GOPer’s to get them over for Jeffries
My Name Is Jack says
The idea that ANY Republican House member would vote for Jeffries for Speaker is beyond ridiculous.
jamesb says
Actually?
4 or 5 REPUBLICAN VOTES would do it for Jeffies
My Name Is Jack says
Name ANY Republican who would conceivably vote for Jeffries and the reason he/ she would do so,

Maybe Lauren Boebert if he took her to a show and bought her some popcorn.

Blue State Republicans that might want to switch parties?
Or that got MAJOR deals from Dem’s that would keep them in office???
