“I went through hell,” says Yocheved Lifschitz, an 85-year-old grandmother and peace activist released by Hamas on Monday after two weeks in captivity.
Ms Lifschitz and her husband were kidnapped by Hamas gunmen on motorbikes and taken into a “spider’s web” of tunnels underneath Gaza, she said.
She described being hit by sticks on the journey, but said most of the hostages were being “treated well”.
She was freed alongside another woman, Nurit Cooper, 79, on Monday evening.
Extraordinary images show the grandmother shaking the hand of a Hamas gunman, just seconds before she was handed over to the International Red Cross at the Rafah crossing between Gaza and neighbouring Egypt.
“Shalom,” she appears to say to the gunman – the Hebrew word for peace.
Ms Lifschitz was kidnapped, alongside her husband Oded, from Nir Oz Kibbutz in southern Israel on 7 October. He has not been released.
It was early in the morning when Hamas attacked their kibbutz, massacring the small community. One in four residents are believed to have been killed or kidnapped, including many children.
Speaking at a news conference from Ichilov hospital in Tel Aviv just a few hours after her release, Ms Lifschitz explained what happened after she was kidnapped.
She said she was hit with sticks during the journey into Gaza, and suffered bruises and breathing difficulties…..

If one were to try to read what you write in a literal sense (which i think is probably a bad idea), you would seem to be saying that Hamas is right to hold Israeli (and American) hostages because it might cost Netanyahu his job and you would welcome that result because in your political worldview, all ends justify the means.
Shalom is also the Hebrew word for goodbye.
If there is a hell, the gunman she said goodbye to will be headed there.

Israel can vote out Netanyahu in their next election if they choose. I had wanted them to previously. They are a democracy after all, but also a nation at war. I think they are more concerned at the moment with stopping the ability of Hamas to kill and rape and torture more of them than whatever failures of Netanyahu’s government led to the lack of intelligence was needed to heed this danger.
What I would like to know is what makes Mrs. Lifschitz a “peace activist?” She is an 85 year old woman who along with many others was brutally kidnapped. She may never see her elderly husband again. Since she said “goodbye” in Hebrew, that makes her a “peace activist?”

I very much support the concept of U.S. foreign aid. Ukraine and Israel need it at this time. We should also help innocent civilians in Gaza but all the money that gets sent there seems to be intercepted by Hamas in order to launch more terror.

I do not understand where “peace activist” comes into the narrative. She was an 85 year old woman living on a Kibbutz. She was not part of Code Pink.
You make a big deal that she was “holding the hand” of the Hamas gunman as she was turned over as having some sort of meaning. Do you think she had a choice? Do you think she wanted to be in that position?
You and Donald Trump are both somehow taking some sort of twisted acknowledgement of what happened to Israel being inevitable because you both dislike Netanyahu. That is simply disgusting. You can believe whatever you believe about Netanyahu. He is the elected leader of a democracy that held a free and fair election. After this terrorist attack, he brought his political opponents into his Cabinet. That is not something that we would see happening here.
Whatever one thinks about Netanyahu and any of his policies, one should not dismiss all of Israel and indeed all the Jewish people everywhere in the world based on that. Nobody should view America as being somehow an understandable target for attack because they dislike Trump or Biden or whomever is President at that time.
I have no issue at all with Scott’s post and agree in theory with about all of it (which may or may not disappoint him.)
However, every single time james attempts to engage on this matter, it should how truly uninformed he is.
Mrs. Lifschitz, the courageous “peace activist” has expressed anger that the Israeli government did not heed what she believes were warnings that Hamas was preparing an attack. She, along with other Israelis, are mad that the government did not do more to eradicate Hamas earlier. I have no doubt that many people within Israel are upset now because they do want to see a full-fledged ground invasion occur. (I say leave it up to the military to decide the best tactic and timing considering all the complexities.)
So I think james needs to at least reconsider his labeling of Mrs. Lifschitz as a “peace activist” as he sees it and also understand that Israeli anger at Netanyahu is probably because they want him to do more to kill terrorists and not do less as james prefers.
