The House Republican caucus whittles choices down….
After a barrage of secret ballots, House Republicans have narrowed their crowded field for the speakership nomination down to two contenders: Tom Emmer and Mike Johnson.
The conference now heads into a final vote after eliminating five other candidates. Whoever secures a simple majority would become the GOP’s third speaker nominee in three weeks. Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) withdrew his name from consideration voluntarily after the fourth ballot, when he risked elimination regardless given that he tied for last place.
It’s still unclear if either Emmer or Johnson can reach the necessary 217 votes to win the gavel on the House floor.
But the final ballot essentially represents a popularity contest between two party leaders, as Emmer (R-Minn.), the GOP whip, squares off against Johnson, the vice chair of the conference and former chair of the Republican Study Committee….

House GOP Whip Tom Emmer’s bid to be speaker is on the verge of collapse amid opposition from the right flank of his conference and fresh attacks waged by former President Donald Trump – coming just hours after the Minnesota Republican was picked as the party’s nominee.
Several Republicans who oppose Emmer say they will not move off their opposition and are calling for a new candidate. Emmer can only afford to lose four Republicans, and 26 voted against him behind closed doors.
Emmer voted to certify the 2020 election, voted to keep the government open for 47 days, voted for the bipartisan law to avoid a debt default and voted to codify same-sex marriage – all issues that members of the hard-right have cited as issues.…..

What will House Republicans do? If Emmer winds up with the gavel, it will be a significant repudiation of Trump now.

They can leave him at any time.

No, in their mind, its a hostage situation. They are worried about primaries and the noisemakers in the base. Doesn’t make their mindset justifiable or correct, but that is where their mindset is.
There have been many cases of people who were kidnapped or held hostage or battered spouses and had an actual opportunity to leave but were afraid to do so.

Emmer is out after 26 Republicans indicated they would not vote for him in an open vote.
It appears it is impossible at this time for any Republican House member to get the required votes.
