Hot DAMN!…..
The Republican quest for a US House Speaker just went rogue….
The next up Jim Jordan of Ohio won’t get the number of votes I’d bet either….
Who is the mystery choice that can actually with the vote in the House among Republicans?
Some Republicans have begun to lay the groundwork for an alternate candidate apart from Jordan if Scalise formally steps aside.
Without a speaker, the House is unable to consider any legislation to aid Israel in its war against Hamas or pass any appropriations bills to avoid a potential government shutdown in mid-November.
Republicans filed into the meeting expecting more opportunities to voice their disagreements with Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.). But now that the majority leader has left the race, it’s unclear what the agenda of the meeting becomes — or how long it lasts. As Scalise was announcing his withdrawal, Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), a member of the ultraconservative House Freedom Caucus, said he was not surprised by the turn of events and said the conference should move on to Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio)…..

Some Backers of Scalise Now Won’t Support Jordan
“Several backers of Steve Scalise are opposed to Jim Jordan’s potential speakership bid out of frustration with how the Ohioan handled losing to the Louisianan after the House GOP’s internal election this week,” Politico reports.
Scott P says
Oddly enough Scalise represents the same district (LA-1) that was held by Bob Livingston from 1977-1999. Livingston was all set to become House Speaker in 1998 when his extramarital affair came to light. Like Scalise he withdrew from the Speaker’s race and resigned his House seat, even though other philandering Republicans like Henry Hyde and Newt Gingrich stayed in the House and pushed the impeachment of Bill Clinton for philandering.
After Livingston withdrew the Speakership went to Denny Hastert–who later went to jail for child molestation. And in 2023 we have Speaker in waiting Jim Jordan, who is accused of looking the other way while a team doctor abused the wrestlers Jordan coached.

Thanks for the look back Scott….

Traditional Christian family values — so prevalent among the leaders of the moral majority party, as opposed to those libertine scoundrels on the other side of the aisle.
Save the children.
Ghost of SE says
Pro Impeachment Republicans Dan Newhouse and David Valadao could get Democratic support and enough Republican support to become the dark horse choice for Speaker.
CG says
Definitely a coincidence with Livingston and Scalise coming from the same district, but back in 1998 when it was going to go to Livingston, Gingrich had already announced his resignation from Congress.
CG says
Hastert was convicted of financial crimes related to his efforts to cover up the decades old secret of the horrific things he did as a wrestling coach, which of course is ironically the job that Jordan once held.

Jim Jordan could be put in the same situation and those two you mention….

An Update on House Republicans
Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) gave NBC News the status of the House Republican conference as they emerged from their closed door meeting: “The French have a word for it… clusterfuck.”
Said another Republican to Fox News: “It’s a shit show in there.”
Austin Scott to Run for Speaker
Rep. Austin Scott (R-GA) has filed to run for the Republican nomination for House Speaker, Punchbowl News reports.
However, attendance problems could prevent a vote today in the GOP conference.
Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) says that just 209 of 221 Republicans are at work today.

House GOP Again Rejects Bid to Avoid Speaker Fight
“House Republicans on Friday rejected — for the second time this week — a proposal designed to help ensure their pick for speaker has the support needed to prevail on the floor,” Politico reports.
“GOP lawmakers voted to table a plan to require 217 of the 221 House Republicans to agree on their next leader before any speakership vote on the floor, where Democrats are set to remain united in support of Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).”
“Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) is now the only declared candidate for the GOP’s nod, but he remains short of the support needed to win on the floor.”

There will be a Jim Jordan vote later this afternoon …Reports
