There will be more ballot rounds…..
Note….
One Republican House member to Politico on the vote for speaker: “I personally know 5 will change their votes from yes to no on second round. That’s what they told me. This will get worse.”
jamesb says
It is pointed out that in a secret ballot yesterday 55 GOPer House members voted AGAINST Jordan….
Could McHenry or even McCarthy be a option?
Democratic Socialist Dave says
For those who might still have believed or hoped that Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-upstate NY and Liz Cheney’s replacement in the House GOP leadership) is some kind of Northeastern moderate Republican like Susan Collins or Charlie Baker:
“Our friend and colleague @Jim_Jordan is a patriot.
“He is an America First warrior who wins the toughest of fights – going after corruption and delivering accountability at the highest levels of government on behalf of WE THE PEOPLE. pic.twitter.com/JFTbBs3vbw”
— Rep. Elise Stefanik (@RepStefanik) October 17, 2023
jamesb says
Lot of them dancing for Jordan KNOWING that Jordan ain’t gonna make the spot
My Name Is Jack says
See James is one of those who wants to believe that Stefanik is some kind of “moderate .”
Accordingly, when DSD pointed out her blathering for an insurrectionest ?
He had to come up with some defense fo one of his “moderates.”
Thus the above…see she “really “ is just pretending (blah, blah, blah)
jamesb says
There ARE Moderate Republicans
I’m not the only one who points to this
One damn House vote does NOT define them
jamesb says
It Doesn’t Look Good for Jim Jordan
“Following a disastrous first vote on the House floor, Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) has delayed a second vote on his candidacy for speaker until 11 a.m. Wednesday,” Punchbowl News reports.
“Jordan had a rough, rough day. After 20 Republicans voted against him, Jordan has had difficulty shrinking his opposition, sources involved in the whip operation told us.”
“In fact, some Jordan opponents aren’t even agreeing to meet with the Ohio Republican. That’s not a good sign. Most of the Jordan opposition met privately after the vote. And almost everyone is going to continue to vote against Jordan.”

….Many in the party are rallying behind efforts that would give McHenry more power to act as a temporary speaker, expanding a role otherwise appears to be largely dedicated to organizing the process of electing a new speaker.
Rep. Carlos Giménez (R-Fla.) – who has pledged to continue to vote for McCarthy for speaker – told reporters Tuesday that moves to further empower McHenry have gained momentum – “as they should.”

McHenry and Hal Rogers may be the only real unifying options here.

Jordan most likely won’t have enough votes to be elected speaker on second ballot. Gimenez, Diaz-Balart, Rutherford won’t vote for JJ again. Others signaling the same, though some NO votes – like John James and Doug LaMalfa – open to back JJ.
My Name Is Jack says
This has descended to low comedy.
Cong,Ken Buck voted for Cong. Tom Emmer for Speaker.
When asked,”Do you really want Tom Emmer to be Speaker?”
Buck answered,” No I don’t like Tom Emmer .”
CG says
He said that was a joke that did not land correctly.
Buck is proving himself to be one of the only honest, principled people left in the Conference.
Ghost of SE says
I give Buck marginal credit for reconsidering his original objections to certifying the 2020 election results and his support of banning congressional stock trades. All his other views are utterly appalling.
Keith says
Yes, this was a joke.
But Buck is on his way out, and like so many spin less Republicans, as such, he found his courage and principles as he heads to a job at CNN.
jamesb says
Jordan IS pissed he ain’t going anywhere
Manu Ragu@twitter
New — Jim Jordan tells us he’s going to stay in race and warns against cutting deal with Ds to reopen House. “No one in our conference wants to see a coalition government with the Democrats. We are going to keep working. We will get to the votes.”
He’s at risk of more R NO votes
jamesb says
Manu Raju @ Twitter
As Jordan warns against “coalition government” with Ds, Jeffries says informal bipartisan talks have “accelerated” and suggests openness to empowering Rep. McHenry.
“I have respect for Patrick McHenry” and other Republicans, Jeffries said. “Jim Jordan is not one of them”
jamesb says
They ARE TALKING to Democrats House Majority Leader Hakeim Jeffries….
McHenry seems to be coming into the picture
He as well as McCarthy said they didn’t want the spot…..
Hmmmmm?
Ghost of SE says
At some point tonight or tomorrow, James will be lecturing Jack and others about how Jeffries and Democrats need to come to the table to give Jim Jordan his votes to become Speaker.
That’s a better joke than what Ken Buck tried passing off earlier. Also not an unlikely prospect.
jamesb says
Ha, ha, ha
SE YOU just made me laugh!
Scott P says
Republicans are fucking themselves quite nicely and I think it’s hilarious.

Trump Era……
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Remember when the Party of Lincoln (in the White House for all but 16 of the 72 years from 1861 to 1933) were considered (like the British Conservatives) to be the “natural party of government?
jamesb says
Before MY time!
bdog says
It was probably the first vote I watched in years…live from my phone…it was over halfway through the vote…just like watching a giants game (cause you already knew they lost before the game started)…
I don’t really see a Jordan way out…Probably might have to make a McHenry acting speaker so the house can function…It is really comical as Scott said…you couldn’t write better soap opera drama than “As the World Turns”
jamesb says
there where shots of the chamber seats with Jordan just sitting there grimacing …..
Tough SHIT Jim…..
