Running for President these days means ya can’t be single like Michael Douglas in ‘The American President’?
Top GOP donors and their allies privately are pushing Sen. Tim Scott‘s team for more detail about his bachelor status before deciding how much to support him in the presidential campaign, according to two people familiar with the conversations.
Why it matters: Many of the donors are in the market for a viable alternative to former President Trump — but still aren’t sure about Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who’s running second to Trump in GOP polls. Scott, 57, is among those trying to woo such fundraisers.
- The U.S. hasn’t elected an unmarried person as president in 139 years. It’s typical for candidates to trot out their families to try to enhance their appeal to voters.
- Scott’s reluctance to say much about his private life has raised concerns among some conservative Republican donors, according to the sources, who requested anonymity given the sensitivity of the issue.
Driving the news: Responding to this reporting, a senior official for Scott’s campaign told Axios the South Carolina senator will be discussing the issue in the coming weeks.
- During an interview with Axios in May, Scott said he had a girlfriend but kept her identity private….
Tim Scott Hmmmmm on the subject….
In a world that can feel isolating and even soul-crushing, members of Congress tend to rely heavily on their chiefs of staff, forming close bonds of mutual respect and trust.
Few of these partnerships, however, are likely to have evolved in quite the same way as the one between U.S. Sen. Tim Scott and Jennifer DeCasper.
The South Carolina Republican and the 38-year-old former prosecutor who runs his office have, over the past 6½ years, developed a collaborative professional relationship and deep personal friendship through highs and lows in Washington and at home.
The unique nature of their partnership might be matched only by the unique circumstances of their introduction.
“If you ask the senator how we ended up together, he will tell you it was divine,” DeCasper said. “Neither of us knew anything about the other. I had a terrible interview. I knew nothing about the South. I should not have been hired. And yet I was still hired.”
“It was a God thing, honestly,” Scott, a devout evangelical Christian, agreed. “I knew the Lord had a plan.”
In separate interviews with The Post and Courier, DeCasper and Scott each described how the two got together, work together and find meaning in their jobs and in their lives…..

Why anyone cares that a Presidential candidate chooses to be single is beyond me.

But perhaps, say the homophobes, it’s because he’s (what you can’t say in Florida)…
Recall (although few of us are old enough) the whispering campaign against Adlai Stevenson.

Are we suggesting Adlai II was gay? That would have been big news to Adlai III. Adlai was divorced and was romantically involved with Marietta Tree who was married throughout. So, yes, the Republicans went after a divorced man running for President (see Ronald Reagan), but I doubt they tried to really sell the “he’s gay” rumor.
As far as Senator Scott is concerned he was my floor neighbor when he was in the House and we were transitioning to California and had sold our DC condo (we lived near the House side of the Capitol). I saw him every morning, many times with a younger man who I assumed was a Congressional aid. My gaydar never went off when I was around him.

Tim Scott to Introduce His Girlfriend
Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) said “that he would soon introduce an important person in his life — his girlfriend,” ABC News reports.
“Scott, who has never been married, brushed aside chatter about his personal life as highlighted in a recent article by the website Axios, for example.”

The Washington Post does a piece on Tim Scott ‘s ‘Girl Friend’ question….
Tim Scott’s girlfriend
The unmarried Republican presidential candidate doesn’t like talking about his new relationship very much. But he is talking about it….
…
…Now, Scott was suggesting otherwise. And the timing of that revelation seemed a bit convenient.
“He has staked so much on his personal story, character and faith,” said the operative, who spoke to me on the condition of anonymity because, well, that’s how people kick dirt around in this business. “He’s running as America’s pastor, so to speak, as he courts evangelicals in Iowa, and I think a lot of folks may wonder about his lack of a family.”…
