The appointment on Friday of a special counsel to investigate Hunter Biden likely ensured that the probe of the president’s son, and the headlines it produces, will doggedly shadow his father’s reelection campaign for the duration of it.
While no evidence has yet been presented to connect Hunter Biden’s business dealings with President Joe Biden, the Department of Justice’s decision to allow for a special counsel adds fuel to a storyline that many on the right have feverishly gripped as the key to the president’s political downfall.
And yet, it was an outcome that still managed to please no one.
Inside the White House, U.S. Attorney David Weiss’ selection as special counsel was met with private frustration. Those close to Biden believed that the appointment was the result of a GOP pressure campaign intended to distract from the legal troubles surrounding their party’s presidential frontrunner, former President Donald Trump.
But many Republicans also voiced unhappiness, expressing their belief that the appointment of a special counsel was actually meant to protect the president by creating a mechanism to stall the various Hunter Biden probes being conducted by the GOP-led House of Representatives.
What was certain in the aftermath of Attorney General Merrick Garland’s announcement was that as much as the White House had tried to turn the page, the specter of Hunter Biden’s legal problems would hang over his father’s reelection bid…

For many weeks now, Republicans have been railing against Hunter Biden’s “sweetheart deal” and were very upset that it was offered. Now, they are upset that it has gone away. They have been calling sometime now for a Special Counsel to be appointed to take over this case. Now, that has happened, and they are upset about that. It seems to me they are upset for the sake of being upset. They do not seem to want an actual justice resolution to whatever it was that Hunter Biden did illegally (and he has admitted to some of it) and if there winds up being any actual criminal ties to the actions of his father, but that they simply want to be able to talk about this for the next year plus.It seems to me they will be able to, but are unwilling to give up the “trump card” of “two systems of justice”, etc. etc. In no way was this week’s development a good thing for Hunter Biden or Joe Biden, but MAGA Republicans are pretending to be furious and telling each other that this was all done to protect the Bidens and they are laughing about it in the White House. There is some serious cognitive dissonance going on here, or it is all just politics.
This is not to say that there are not some legitimate questions to be asked about this whole mess. Let us deal with the facts though. …

Hunter Biden is a train wreck. But Republicans are so consumed with hatred of the Democratic President (and by now we should know they’d feel that way about ANY Democratic President) they simply can’t think straight.
Another case in point. Republicans claiming Craig Robertson–the 75 yr old Utah man who made several threats to Biden–was the victim of police brutality because he was gunned down after pointing a gun at FBI agents who came to his house.
Apparently 15 yr old black kids with toy guns “have it coming” if they are mowed down by cops. But an old white guy with an arsenal and several pages of online threats to the President of the USA is supposed to be allowed to shoot FBI agents before being apprehended.
