GOP presidential candidate and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie warned Tuesday that Republicans would be giving an “enormous gift” to Democrats if they nominate former President Trump next year.
“The debate Wednesday was the starting gun in this race, and people are going to start to focus on it this fall and when they do, Republicans are going to realize that nominating Donald Trump is going to be an enormous gift to the Democrats,” Christie said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
“And the Democrats are doing what they’re doing because they want Donald Trump to be the nominee because they know they can beat Donald Trump,” he added. “And the reason they know they can, is they already have.”
Christie was commenting on a recent poll in Georgia that showed Trump with a 42-point lead despite his recent indictment in the state. He suggested the polls can change once autumn rolls around and more people begin paying attention to politics.
He said any polls up until this point have been “hypothetical” and suggested Trump’s legal challenges could change people’s minds because he will be spending much of his time in a courtroom instead of on the campaign trail…..
