Former President Donald Trump arrived at the federal courthouse in Washington Thursday to be processed by authorities ahead of his arraignment on charges that he sought to derail the transfer of presidential power in 2020.
Trump was expected to plead not guilty to four felony charges stemming from his months-long bid to seize a second term despite losing the election to Joe Biden. The charges, brought by special counsel Jack Smith and approved by a federal grand jury earlier this week, are: conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to deprive Americans of the right to a fair election process, conspiracy to obstruct Congress’ proceedings on Jan. 6, 2021, and the carrying out of that obstruction effort.
Trump’s motorcade arrived at the E. Barrett Prettyman U.S. courthouse around 3:15 p.m. after Trump flew to Washington from his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, earlier in the day. The courthouse is located across the street from the Capitol, where thousands of his supporters rioted two and a half years ago in what prosecutors say was the culmination of Trump’s effort to subvert the election results.
On Thursday, pro-Trump sentiment was muted, with only a few stray Trump supporters demonstrating outside the courthouse under a gray, overcast sky.
After turning himself into authorities, Trump was expected to be booked as a criminal defendant and then appear briefly before Magistrate Judge Moxila Upadhyaya to enter a plea. Although Upadhyaya is presiding over the arraignment, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan has been assigned to handle the case and will likely preside over most future court appearances…..

After arriving at the courthouse in a Secret Service motorcade, Trump entered the not guilty plea before Magistrate Judge Moxila A. Upadhyaya — following in the footsteps of hundreds of others charged with crimes as a result of the Jan. 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol building. According to the D.C. U.S. attorney’s office, 1,077 people have faced federal charges in some way tied to that attack. Trump, the 45th president of the United States, is the 1,078th.
“As to counts one to four, how does Mr. Trump plead?” Judge Upadhyaya asked Trump as he stood at the defense table, flanked by his lawyers.
Trump raised his head and said “Not guilty.”
The judge then reminded Trump that while he would be released, there are conditions with that release that must be obeyed, including that he must not violate any laws, must appear in court when required, and must not communicate with anyone known to be a witness in the case, unless it is through an attorney. His next scheduled court appearance is on Aug. 28 at 10 a.m., before U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, though the magistrate suggested he would have the option not to appear personally…..
