Attorney General Merrick B. Garland on Friday elevated the prosecutor investigating President Biden’s son Hunter to special counsel status, signaling that the inquiry had entered a new stage and setting up the possibility that the 2024 presidential election would be shadowed by myriad investigations.
Mr. Garland, who made the announcement at the Justice Department’s headquarters in Washington, named David C. Weiss, the U.S. attorney in Delaware, who has handled the case for years, as the special counsel. The move comes seven months after Mr. Garland appointed Robert K. Hur to be a special counsel investigating whether President Biden has mishandled classified documents.
Mr. Garland said he decided to elevate Mr. Weiss after the prosecutor informed him on Tuesday the investigation had “reached the stage” where the powers of a special counsel were necessary to continue. Mr. Weiss would have the authority to investigate all related matters in his inquiry and could bring charges in any jurisdiction, Mr. Garland added, meaning that Mr. Weiss would not be subject to day-to-day supervision by any official at the department.
He described Mr. Weiss, who was appointed by Mr. Trump and kept on by Mr. Garland to complete the investigation, as a “career prosecutor.”
“The appointment of Mr. Weiss reinforces for the American people the department’s commitment to both independence and accountability in particularly sensitive matters,” Mr. Garland said. “I am confident that Mr. Weiss will carry out his responsibility in an evenhanded and urgent manner and in accordance with the highest traditions of this department.”

House Republicans are NOT happy?
Top House Republicans are accusing the Biden administration of stymying the investigation into Hunter Biden following the Department of Justice’s appointment of a new special counsel.
A spokesperson for Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) said the new special counsel into Hunter Biden “can’t be trusted,” in a statement responding to the appointment Friday….

Meanwhile, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) called the move “part of the Justice Department’s efforts to attempt a Biden family coverup.”
“Let’s be clear what today’s move is really about,” Comer said in a statement. “The Biden Justice Department is trying to stonewall congressional oversight as we have presented evidence to the American people about the Biden family’s corruption.”….
I’m beginning to agree with Weissman that this Specail Counsel ok for the Delaware DOJ prosocutor is a bit of a mess up on face value……

A special counsel is supposed to be from outside the govt (sec 600.3(a)), so how is this consistent with the Special Counsel regulations? Weiss already messed up the Hunter plea greenest to a fate the well – now this.

SUSPICIONS: Hunter Biden may yet plead but this strategy of not waiving venue enabled the case being brought in a district (DC or CA) where the judge may be more favorable at sentencing. Ie this is mostly now about judge shopping.
