But according to the latest PBS NewsHour/NPR/Marist poll, Republican faith in Trump’s faultlessness has dwindled this summer.

He is currently the subject of four criminal probes, examining his role in hush money payments made during his 2016 presidential campaign, interfering with the election process in Georgia, attempting to overturn Biden’s victory in the 2020 election and mishandling classified documents after leaving office. He has already been indicted on dozens of felony charges in two of those cases.
Taken together, Trump’s legal difficulties may be weighing him down among some voters within his own party. In mid-June, 32 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents said if Trump continues to run for president, they are likely to support another candidate. By late July, that interest in backing a different GOP nominee rose to 37 percent.
Yet a majority of Republican primary voters have dismissed the criminal and civil allegations, investigations, indictments and trials involving Trump as being politically motivated, regardless of the evidence gathered against him, said Republican strategist Douglas Heye. And a majority of Republicans – 58 percent – say they still plan to vote for Trump, according to this latest poll.
Trump supporters “haven’t really spent a lot of time with any of the evidence because they don’t want to,” Republican strategist Whit Ayres said…..

It has a whopping 6% MOE.
Making a big deal about these minor fluctuations in these innumerable “polls” is a fool’s errand (with emphasis on “fool”) as anyone who understands politics knows.
Suffice it to say that, notwithstanding these minor fluctuations,Trump still commands the allegiance of the vast majority of Republicans and, as I have pointed out, even those who “disapprove” of him will vote for him if he is the nominee.
As Whit Ayers ,a veteran Republican pollster, says in this article, Republicans simply don’t want to know about Trumps criminal activity.They don’t care.It interferes with their cult like devotion to him.
As for you James?You just refuse to accept what has happened to the Republican Party and desperately,all evidence to the contrary notwithstanding,concoct in your own mind this alternate reality whereby eliminating Trump will return that party to where it was Twenty something years ago mor so.Yeah that’s gonna happen when the leading alternative to Trump is a radical extremist like Ron DeSantis.

My day dream is that Trump wins the nomination on the same day he IS convinced of a shitload of Federal criminal charges and State charges in Georgia and NY….
At which time the Republican Party is STUCK with a nominee that IS a convicted FELON in TWO states and Federal Court‼️…..
My DREAM is the Republicans are so fucked that thbey do NOT knpw what to do and succeed is screwing themselves out the Presidency for another FOUR years and hand the Democrats BACK a House Majority and allow them to KEEP their Senate one Too!……

Democrats thought Trump would be easier to beat than other GOP contenders in 2016 (and he didn’t carry the popular vote), but the country took a sharp turn towards division, xenophobia, isolationism and incipient Fascism or caudillismo.
However a far graver parallel would be the world-historical catastrophe which the German Communists (following a disastrous “Third Period” policy in Stalin’s Communist International) considered that their most dangerous enemy was the Social Democrats (whom they called “social fascists”) and not the National Socialists. They would not join the Social Democrats and other German democrats in opposing Nazism, and even joined the Nazis in supporting a crippling Berlin transit strike in 1932.
They only found out their mistake in 1933 when they found themselves in concentration camps next to Social Democrats.
In 2016 Trump wasn’t carrying FOUR Criminal Trials on his back……

In every other cycle in recent history the GOP nominated the candidate who was leading in the polls the summer prior.
