Democrat Donna Deegan, a former television anchor and founder of a charity group that works with breast cancer victims, on Tuesday upset Republican Daniel Davis to win the mayor’s race in Jacksonville.
Deegan becomes the first female mayor in Jacksonville history, having defeated a candidate who outspent her significantly. Her opponent had the backing of the Republican Party of Florida and the endorsement of Gov. Ron DeSantis.
“Everybody said it could not be done in Jacksonville,” said Deegan, who said the campaign and its volunteers had worked for a year and a half ahead of the election. Deegan drew 52 percent of the vote.
Davis — a former legislator and CEO of the local Chamber of Commerce — and his allies hit Deegan over her participation in Black Lives Matter protests, and the local sheriff said she would install “radical policies” if elected. Deegan pushed back by calling the attacks smears and billed herself as a candidate who would change a city government that had been dominated by Republicans. Deegan was also able to score some Republican endorsements ahead of Election Day.
Deegan’s victory gives Florida Democrats a psychological boost just months after the November 2022 elections in which DeSantis won his re-election victory by nearly 20 points, and Republicans crushed Democrats across the state. Democrat Heather Boyd was projected to win the special election for Pennsylvania’s 163rd state House district on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press, allowing Democrats to maintain a narrow grip on the legislative body.
Boyd, a former state legislative and congressional aide, defeated Republican Katie Ford in the contest. The district includes parts of Delaware County outside of Philadelphia. The district became vacant earlier this year after Democratic Rep. Michael Zabel (D) resigned over allegations of sexual harassment.
Boyd’s victory is also a win for the state’s Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro (D), who would have had to contend with a Republican-controlled state Senate and House if Ford won……

After Daniel Cameron (R) won the Republican nomination to challenge Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D), the Cook Political Report rates the race as Lean Democrat.

“The battle lines are drawn in what could be the hardest-fought election of 2023: Kentucky Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear will run for a second term against Republican state Attorney General Daniel Cameron,” NBC News reports.
“Cameron started the GOP primary as the front-runner, but before he won the nomination Tuesday, he had to manage a challenge from opponents including Kelly Craft, the former ambassador to the United Nations, who sank millions of her own dollars into an unsuccessful bid. Now Republicans turn to the general election, where they face a new fight: dethroning the popular Beshear, no easy task even with the state’s rightward lean.”
Jacksonville at the 12th most populous ranking was the largest US city to have a Republican mayor. Now that title will go to 15th largest Ft. Worth.
Mayoral Losses Deal Blow to GOP
“Republicans suffered surprising losses Tuesday in mayoral races in Jacksonville, Fla., and Colorado Springs, dealing a blow to the GOP in two longtime conservative strongholds and highlighting the limits of waging hyperpartisan campaign battles in local races,” the Washington Post reports.
