President Biden started off with ‘No’ that now is moving to ‘maybe’ and worries from the Democratic Left on possible Biden ‘givebacks’….
House Speaker McCarthy , trying to shore up the doubts that he carried on his back when he got the GOP leader spot is trying to come out with some wins…..
The ‘deadline’ stated in June 1st….
Of course it isn’t….
Memebers of Congress will probably have to hang out past then….
Most Americans don’t know and care about this….
But?
It IS about the US Government paying it’s bill’s and raising it’s borrowing, which it WILL do as ALWAYS….
Congress and the White House are racing against the clock, and the House and Senate schedules, to find a path to avoiding default on the nation’s debt. President Joe Biden has truncated his international trip. Could late-May recesses also be on the chopping block?
Tuesday’s talks yielded a set of official proxies for Biden and Speaker Kevin McCarthy voiced optimism about the new “structure” of discussions. But as the key players keep talking, time is ticking. And each chamber is scheduled to be in Washington just a handful of days before the potential June 1 X-date (and not at the same time, either).
A handful of House Democrats will resume a long-shot end run on Wednesday to bypass the sticky debt ceiling and spending negotiations, as a “discharge petition” ripens on the vine today. They’ve waited the mandatory seven days and can now start gathering the 218 signatures needed to force the speaker to bring it up. But Democrats securing a handful of GOP votes is improbable and the procedural timeline — another seven day wait and then two legislative days before consideration — makes getting this done before the earliest projected X-date a fantasy…..

Rep. Jared Golden dinged President Joe Biden for slow-walking negotiations on the debt limit, echoing the anxiety many lawmakers are feeling following no deal coming out of the meeting between congressional leaders and the White House.
Details: In a Tuesday interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press Now,” the moderate Maine Democrat said he’s been “disappointed with the way” the Biden administration has approached negotiations, and Democrats would have been in a stronger negotiating position if they “had led the charge” back in February.
“Up to date, I’ve been focused on the process and a desire to get Democratic leadership to acknowledge what was going to happen, and how can we position ourselves for these negotiations from the strongest position possible. And like I said, I think we’re in a weaker position because the no negotiating stance was always … not tenable. And now we’re in it.”

With Treasury saying the “X-date” could come as soon as June 1, Golden said he was glad to see lawmakers taking on the issue with seriousness, even if the timing is unclear: “Of course, we don’t know if June 1 really is the date or not, but it’s good to see the urgency.”
