Open Thread for April 4th, 2023….Hillary Clinton Honored…Donald Trump Arrested….

How interesting history unwinds, eh?

Today New York will be focused on the arraignment of a former president, the first proceeding of its kind in American history.

But other things are on the day’s agenda besides Donald Trump’s scheduled appearance for booking, fingerprinting and entering a plea in court. This evening a private club on East 66th Street will continue a tradition dating to the 1870s with a black-tie dinner.

The honoree will be Hillary Clinton, who lost the presidency to Trump in 2016.

The timing is a coincidence, said John Sussek III, the president of the Lotos Club. The date was chosen around the beginning of the year, long before the grand jury hearing the case against Trump voted on the indictment that brought Trump to Manhattan from Mar-a-Lago, his resort in Florida.

“We have had princes and princesses, senators and congressmen,” Sussek said, noting that one recent honoree was Dr. Anthony Fauci, a leader in the federal response to the pandemic. Another past honoree was Robert Morgenthau, a predecessor of Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney, whose office brought the case against Trump…..

    Donald Trump isn’t the first Trump to get arrested. His father, Fred, was arrested twice, — once at a Ku Klux Klan riot, and another time over building code violations.

    Anthony Scaramucci, who served as former President Donald Trump’s White House communications director for 10 days in 2017, claimed on CNN that his old boss may fake an illness to end his 2024 campaign.

    Said Scaramucci: “I think the absence of his family members in this campaign is gonna knock him out of the race. He just doesn’t do well without them.”

    Lots of the kooks booed Mike Pence yesterday.The only reason I can think of that they would do that Is because he refused to help Trump steal the election .By intrinsically agreeing with the hoodlums who were roaming the Capitol seeking out Pence so they could hang him,those who were Doing the boos can be classified has pro domestic terrorism.Not surprising I might add.

    Then today Kristi Noem ,a potential Republican presidential candidate , bizzarely bragged that her 2 year old granddaughter had a gun and a pony.I presume that was some kind of joke but when dealing with These kooks?

    In an all too rare moment of bipartisan agreement, everyone attests to his talents as one of America’s great broadcasters.

  15. I was sorry to hear that Jerry Springer had passed away.

    Many years back now, I had a few brief exchanges with him on political matters at downtown Chicago establishments. He was always very courteous and polite although I am sure he was mostly focused on chatting up young ladies.

    I remember that watching his show when it aired late at night was a fun a experience for many in my college dorm. The show itself, however scripted, was a cultural and sociological cesspool basically though, that was exploitative and demonstrated the worst of America. In many ways it helped dumb down society in preparation for Donald Trump going from reality tv star to political force. The show made Jerry very rich and since I think he actually cared about people, I doubt he was truly proud of what he had become known for.

  16. 2024 General Election Thoughts

    I said in my post on the 2024 Democratic Primary that the party’s chances of winning the White House would not be impacted. Whether it’s Biden or on the off chance it’s Marianne Williamson, D’s have an 85% chance of victory, and that is merely against a non-Trump/DeSantis candidate. Against either of those two, the D’s odds only go up from there.

    You cannot overstate how compromised the Banana Republicans have become, bowing themselves to Seditionists, Putin fanboys, and anti-vaccine/anti-gay/anti-trans bigots(to the extent that they weren’t already such over the previous century before Trump rode down the escalator). In 2022, a year they should have had in the bag, they over-played their hand on culture war BS and nearly lost their shot at the US House, to say nothing of the Senate.

    Among people who dislike both Trump and Biden, Biden is winning those voters by almost double digit margins. And DeSantis is fast becoming a toxic figure himself in his tripling down on the GOP’s failed ’22 strategy. And Biden’s only real scandal is inflation, which is more a sputtering of the economy post-Covid issue than anything else. His signing of the landmark Infrastructure act can be touted as a boon to under-served communities across the South and Midwest. Coupled with his onshoring of American jobs, and he has all in all a decent record to run on while hammering his toxic opponents in a General Election.

    Biden will lose no states he won in 2020, though Nevada and New Hampshire will be a bit close for comfort. And Democrats have excellent offensive opportunities in Alaska, the Electoral Vote in Maine, another Electoral Vote out of Nebraska(encompassing Lincoln, the state Capital), North Carolina, and Texas. Sadly, even running against compromised candidates, there is no point in trying to win in Florida, Iowa, and Ohio. So the D’s ceiling stands at around 364 Electoral Votes and around the 53% of the Popular Vote Barack Obama received in 2008.

              • If a story like this involved a Republican political figure or the child of a Republican political figure, it would be a topic of national discussion. They would be mocked nightly on the late night shows and also on Saturday Night Live (at least pre-writers strike)

                Hunter Biden needs to take financial responsibility for the daughter he fathered and Joe Biden, who holds the most public of all offices, should at the minimum acknowledge that he has a 7th grandchild.

                  • I do not know what possible kind of comparison you are trying to make. All of George H.W. Bush’s kids supported their children. All of the Bush grandchildren were born while their parents were married. A couple of his kids wound up getting divorced and remarried, but all of them would have been expected to provide for the children they helped bring into the world. George H.W. Bush always accurately stated the number of grandchildren he had.

                    Hunter Biden should he held financially responsible for the child he fathered There is no law that demands he have anything else to do with the little girl if he does not want to but he should have to pay appropriate child support. That should not be a controversial position or something that Democrats should fight against.

                    • Neil Bush was talked about all the time when his father was President. Later on, he wound up getting divorced. He was not ever accused of being a deadbeat Dad.

                      The article also seems to go into other embarrassing Presidential relatives. I think the main difference is that none of them were actually living in the White House. as Hunter currently is as an adult, is and regularly accompanying his father on foreign trips.

                      It is not Joe Biden’s fault that Hunter fathered a child he has abandoned and is resisting supporting financially, but he definitely knows he has a 4 year old granddaughter and should acknowledge that when discusses the number of grandchildren he has or if the number of them is posted on on his Whitehouse.gov biography.

      Her father should be held financially responsible for her upbringnig as all fathers who help bring a child into the world should. Do you disagree?

        In fact my mom worked in child support enforcement for the local DA and I know these sticky situations happen to a lot of families; apparently rhe First Family included.

        • It’s not political at all and has nothing to do with Republican vs.Democrat. First Families fairly or unfairly, have gotten tons of attention in America for generations now I do not think you actually disagree that if the political parties were different, this would be considered a different story and would receive different kinds of attention . It should be very easy to say, “yes, Hunter Biden should pay child support.” That should be especially easy to say because he happens to be a very wealthy person.

          The politician in the story is Joe Biden. He talks about his family a lot, even more than a typical politician. That is a good thing and it is a large part of his political history and appeal. Thus, it is not right that he deliberately misstate the number of grandchildren he has. That has nothing to do with any political issue or ideological point of view.

          Nice play on words with “gross.” Definitely a new one for me.

                  I do not believe he has ever had a problem like that. It was his brother, a U.S. Senator, who left his wife for a younger woman, and then saw many in his party turn on him, and he lost reelection about 20 years ago.

                  Back then, those things mattered to most conservatives. They never stopped mattering to me.

          • Among all the children of the Presidential frontunners, in regards to fighting child support responsibilities or the overall issue of having fathered a child but not wanting to even meet them, Hunter is the only one.

            We can all agree that if it were Don Jr. (whom I am sure all of us despise) who fathered a child and tried to fight child support agreements or had never met the child, it would be a huge media story, and likely referenced in every single Don Jr. blog comment, Tweet, etc, among all who are anti-Trump.

            I do not think I have ever made any sort of comment about Hunter’s business dealings. This is a completely different matter.

        • Gee, I haven’t posted here in weeks, if not months, and I return to see some things never change. Our friend Corey Gross is still obsessed with the sex lives of Democrats, especially if their name is Biden.

          The President will be the first to tell you that his only remaining son has some serious problems that include drug usage and that he’s done some stupid things. Not sure why that seems to be such a source of such glee for our friend?

          Maybe Corey saw one of Hunter’s videos and he’s just jealous of one of his more prominent features.

          With all that’s going on with our world — the House Republicans are threatening to destroy our economy by refusing to raise the debt limit, Republicans are demonizing transgender people, and Clarence Thomas was purchased by Harlan Crow twenty years ago and Harlan has been paying on the installment plan ever since — are we really going to spend time discussing Hunter Biden’s sex life?

          It’s pretty obvious that both Trump and Biden will be the nominees of their respective parties, and that will trigger the four year third party “wet dream” of some of our friends here. It’s also important to point out the Clarence’s sugar daddy billionaire Harlan is the prime contributor to the “No Labels” party. Anybody want to guess why he would be doing that? Third parties have ultimately helped to give us two of our worst Presidents in the last 20 years — do we really want to try this again?

          Like 2020 there will be only one choice for President and his name is Joe Biden.
