Democrats NEED her back in the US Senate…
If she is unable toi return she really should step down ….
Newsom can wchedule a special election…..
Schiff seems to be ahead for the spot…..
“After Dianne Feinstein announced she’d contracted the shingles in early March, her staff said she planned to return to the Senate within a matter of weeks,” Politico reports.
“But multiple Democrats close to her, as well as top-ranking congressional aides, are growing increasingly concerned that she may never come back to Washington at all.”
Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) tweets: “It’s time for Sen. Feinstein to resign. We need to put the country ahead of personal loyalty. While she has had a lifetime of public service, it is obvious she can no longer fulfill her duties. Not speaking out undermines our credibility as elected representatives of the people.”
Update….
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) announced on Wednesday that her return to work in Washington has been delayed due to ongoing health complications and called on the Senate to appoint a temporary replacement for her on the Judiciary Committee….
…
A spokesperson for Schumer (D-N.Y.) said he would abide by Feinstein’s request. “Per Sen. Feinstein’s wishes, Majority Leader Schumer will ask the Senate next week to allow another Democratic Senator to temporarily serve on the Judiciary Committee,” they said…..

California Gov. Gavin Newsom committed Monday to nominating a Black woman for the U.S. Senate should Sen. Dianne Feinstein resign from the seat she’s held for more than two decades.
The governor’s surprise statement came as Reid asked Newsom if he would commit to naming a Black woman to the Senate if Feinstein steps down and whether he has thought of particular replacements.
Newsom made the comments to MSNBC host Joy Reid in an appearance on her show, saying he has multiple names in mind for the spot….

Adam Schiff Builds Huge War Chest
CNN: “In the closely watched race to succeed California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, Rep. Adam Schiff outraised the rest of the Democratic field, bringing in $6.7 million during the first quarter – topping the nearly $4.5 million raised by Rep. Katie Porter and roughly $1.3 million collected by Rep. Barbara Lee.”
“Schiff also led the field in available cash, ending March with more than $24.6 million stockpiled in his campaign account.”

I haven’t heard from Keith that used to hang here ….
But would be interested in hearing from him or ANYONE that lives out in California on this …..
Is Newson in a pickle?
What’s Schiff’s support out there?

Uh, OH?
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Tuesday voiced his strong opposition to allowing Democrats to temporarily replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) on the Judiciary Committee, stymieing a move sought by Democrats to strengthen the party’s hand in confirming judicial nominees during Feinstein’s extended absence….
…
Most committee assignments for both Republicans and Democrats are passed without fanfare or controversy by unanimous voice votes on the Senate floor.
But replacing Feinstein on the Judiciary Committee would take 60 votes to approve given GOP objections. This means at least 10 Republicans would need to back the measure — a number that appeared out of reach even before McConnell delivered his first public remarks on the issue on Tuesday.

“The question is, how long until she goes back? So if it’s three months, I don’t know, that becomes a really difficult question. If it’s a couple of weeks? I’m fine with it. I’m not going to pressure her one way or the other. But I think, you know, if it’s going to be months and months? My guess is that she will be her own harshest critic.”
— Sen. John Hickenlooper (D-CO), quoted by Politico, when asked about Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s (D-CA) two-month absence from the U.S. Senate….

Feinstein May Return Next Week
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) spoke to Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) on Monday and a photo of Schumer’s notes suggests she is “hopeful” she’ll return to Washington next week.

Little Is Known About Dianne Feinstein’s Condition
Los Angeles Times: “For years, Feinstein has swatted down growing concerns about her health, assuring constituents largely through statements to the press that she is still able to serve. But with her prolonged absence from the Capitol this spring, pressure is building on the 89-year-old senator and her staff to provide additional details about her condition.”
“With Democrats holding a bare-bones majority in the Senate, they need Feinstein’s vote to confirm judges, approve Biden Cabinet nominees and potentially avert a debt ceiling default. Senators must be at the Capitol to vote, and are not allowed to do so remotely. The predicament has put into stark relief the challenge of balancing a lawmaker’s privacy against the public’s right to know about the health of their representatives.”
Punchbowl News: “Senators are still unsure when Feinstein will be able to return to Washington, and very few of them have been in direct contact with her.”

Sad situation. While I’d prefer she serve her term out, it’s looking more likely that Governor Newsom will have to appoint one sooner rather than later.
Hope Katie Porter can win that seat.

I asked Keith to give us a California perspective but got no naswer back…..
