With Donald Trump slowly imploding….
Hundreds of it’s members arrested for their Jan. 6 stupidity….
Their prime mouth piece Fox News hit in the bank account and shedding talking heads….
Is his political sledge hammer of support following off the cliff?….
It’s been a difficult and disorienting four weeks in MAGA world.
On March 30, former President Donald Trump was indicted by a Manhattan grand jury for his alleged role in participating in a scheme to cover up potential sex scandals during the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump is the nation’s first former president to face criminal charges, and more serious charges may well follow.
Last week, Fox News, the highest-rated and most influential cable news network in America, agreed to pay more than three-quarters of a billion dollars to resolve a defamation suit filed by Dominion Voting Systems over the network’s promotion of deranged conspiracy theories about the 2020 election. It was, according to The Washington Post, the largest publicly disclosed monetary settlement ever in an American defamation action. There are more, and potentially more expensive, lawsuits pending.
And on Monday Fox abruptly cut ties with its biggest prime-time star, Tucker Carlson, one of the most mendacious and poisonous figures in the history of American television.
“I’m shocked. I’m surprised,” Donald Trump told Newsmax’s Greg Kelly. “I think Tucker’s been terrific,” the former president added. “He’s been, especially over the last year or so, he’s been terrific to me.” Other key figures on the MAGA right, like Donald Trump Jr., described the network’s decision as “mind-blowing,” and called Carlson “an actual thought leader in conservatism” and a “once-in-a-generation type talent.”…

Maybe it is. But Trump is racking up Republican endorsements so if MAGA goes down so does the GOP.
jamesb says
My point exactly…..
U don’t see media editors allowing stories about how Trump is actually MORE unpopular across the board than Biden…..
It don’t fit the narrative of the Trump circus attention appeal…..
CG says
The media clearly points out that Biden is less disliked than Trump.
CG says
As to the larger story here, of course if Trump is somehow denied the nomination, he will do what he can to harm the person who stopped him.
He’s already retroactively endorsed Charlie Crist for Governor over Ron DeSantis.
My Name Is Jack says
“The contest between Biden and Trumpism is less Democrat vs. Republican or liberal vs. conservative than it is between an essentially moral vision and an essentially amoral one, a contest between decency and its opposite.”….
David Brooks
Never Trump Republican columnist
CG says
David Brooks has not been a Republican in at least 20 years.
My Name Is Jack says
He is right of center and until Trump came along supported Republican candidates and generally conservative policies .Indeed he was known as the “house conservative” at the New York Times.
How about you?
Are you a Republican?
CG says
Brooks describes himself as a centrist and has not voted for a Republican since at least 2004. He was a clear Obama acolyte for many years. The New York Times may have odd definitions.
CG says
I suppose it was 2006. That year, he said there was a need for a third party and he proposed it to be led by McCain and Lieberman.
Then, in 2008, when McCain ran for President (with Lieberman’s support), Brooks did not vote for McCain. Brooks remained unflinchingly pro-Obama throughout his Presidency. So, his preference for Biden now would be pretty expected.
My Name Is Jack says
And do you disagree with Brooks view above?
CG says
I don’t take issue with the definition of Trumpism. I do not agree that the political agenda that Biden represents can be seen as separate from extreme liberalism or that advances decency or morality, even if most behind it have good intentions.
My Name Is Jack says
Are you a Republican.
CG says
I do not know why that matters to you unless you are looking for motivation to somehow cause me harm or displeasure.
In my state, we do not register by party, so I am unaffiliated and can choose to vote in any primary I want. I do not pay dues or make donations to any political party. My views on Trumpism should be well known by now on this site. It should also be known that I want the Republican Party to be what I once knew it to be, in order to advance a stronger America.
My Name Is Jack says
No I would not wish you “harm.”
I have no idea why you would say such a thing.
Indeed, I usually read your commentary on your blog .I find it well written and perceptive in many ways.Of course I don’t always agree with it .So?
I understand your frustration with what has happened to the Republican Party.Unfortunately for you,I don’t see the Republican Party returning to what you “once knew it to be.”
While you and I often disagree on political matters I hold no personal animosity toward you .
CG says
good to know

People eventually vote against the LESSER Evil……
And they vote with their HEARTS and FEELINGS Not with much of ANYTHING More….
In 2020 it was a CLEAR choice….
IF and I DO say ‘IF’ Donald Trump runs against one Joe Biden?
I DO expect voters to make the SAME choice and Biden win by an even LARGER Margin…..
It would a be a President against egomatic, sexua mischief , racist, serial liar vs a ole timer that just gets shit done….
Simple choice for those who haven’t drank the Kool Aid…..

CG ,
I see where your old stomping ground The Hedgehog Report is closing down.
I hadn’t checked it out in awhile and saw that the moderator was signing off with a final post” The End.”
CG says
It should have shut down a very long time ago.
For some strange reason, some people are unwilling to see it go and they are negotiating with the owner to allow them to donate the money to keep the site running each month.
This might give james an idea.
CG says
After several months, I decided to post one final comment on the “The End” post.

I would like to thank Dave for all his effort over the years. I first found this site late in the 2004 campaign and used to be a very active commenter (previously as Corey.) It used to be very enjoyable, both in agreements and disagreements with others. Many people have left or dropped out though as others attempted to dominate all discussions and engage in personal attacks.
I was particularly proud to have been Mitt Romney’s first Presidential supporter here back in 2007 (and then again in 2011) and I continue to be proud to support him.
Also, I am glad that I was Never Trump from Day 1, and truly understanding the meaning of the word “never”, I did not waiver from that for one day or one minute.
The “community” has certainly changed in recent years, as has the political convictions of most in the comment sections and I think Dave is doing the right thing in ending it. People can find other options if they wish.
Best wishes to all as the Hedgehog Report fades away.
G-d Bless America as it remains the Last Best Hope of Earth. Personally, I will try to hold out hope for as long as possible, that one day the Republican Party which I was so proud to be a member of for many years, will finds its way back to actual conservatism and the legacies of Lincoln and Reagan, instead of blindly falling into the cultism of a scoundrel That path has led and will only continue to lead to many political defeats.”

James used to have a money donation feature on here. Didn’t get a lot of action, as I recall.
I remember too well how Timothy Leal tried to single handedly revive years-ago dead comments pages on P1 in his own waning months. The unwillingness of those commenters to let the dream die smacks of that desperation.
And I agree, HHR should have died off years ago. Not unlike here, the owner is disconnected from the reality of his posters. However, James at least doesn’t take himself as seriously as Dave Wissig does.
CG says
A short I found a way to through the Wayback Machine to get access to *some* of the Haloscan threats at Politics1. I have yet to try to actually put aside the time to read anything on them though, but maybe one day.
CG says
threads, not threats.
Ghost of SE says
Didn’t know any were still available. Figured Ron scrubbed all trace of them after how I ruined his comments section with my vulgar posts under other people’s names.
CG says
the internet is forever
CG says
Dave Wissing doesn’t get involved in discussions at all there and never really did. He is a moderate Republican who says he lost interest in politics about five years ago.
For the sake of his own name and all the effort he did put into running the site for close to 20 years, I cannot imagine why he would allow it to remain a playground for the very small crowd that is left there, who certainly do not share his politics.
jamesb says
I DID have a donation thing…..
No bites…..
I just pay the fare ….
I AM extremely happy to have some of the old crew back right now….

Just an anecdote ,but maybe a harbinger of the future.
The local Republican Party has a revolt of sorts against the reigning “establishment.”
Now the establishment was all pro Trump just not MAGA enough to satisfy the kooks so they revolted. The problem though was that the MAGA crowd itself rapidly split into three factions.Chaos reigned.
Remember something like this happened with the “Tea Party” movement ten to fifteen years ago.
Extremist groups of the Right and Left are always susceptible to these type splits.Everybody want to be the “big cheese”
jamesb says
Yup Jack and it’s on it’s way again for next November and some Republicans KNOW it and are reduced to standing by as it comes at the party…..

Ya go toooooooo Far you piss people off, eh?
