Joins others in the Republican 2024 Presidential nomination sweepstakes race….
He is NOT cowtowing to the Trump MAGA crowd…..
Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) formally launched his presidential campaign on Wednesday after announcing he was going to run for the 2024 Republican nomination earlier this month.
“Today I’m announcing that I’m a candidate for president of the United States,” Hutchinson said in Bentonville, Ark.
Hutchinson hit the Biden administration’s handling of the economy, touting his own economic record as governor.
“Every hardworking American family gets a double hit from the Biden economy,” Hutchinson said. “That is not acceptable.”
“I’ve been chief executive of our state for eight years, and that means I know how to balance a budget,” he said.
While Hutchinson did not bring up former President Trump by name, he appeared to push back on Trump’s stances and past remarks.
Hutchinson vowed not to defund the FBI, something Trump has called for. The former governor also railed against isolationism, a foreign policy strategy….
…
“The last thing that we need is another Joe Biden-Donald Trump race in 2024, so if you don’t accept that proposition that you have to yield, then you have to get in there and fight,” he continued….

Interesting WSJ poll …Among voters who disapprove of both Trump and Biden, Biden leads by a whopping 54% to 15%.
From WSJ,” Clearly swing voters who dislike Biden dislike Trump even more.”
CG says
Seems like a lot of room for Joe Manchin in November.
jamesb says
Manchin seems to be in trouble
GOPer’s want his job….
Biden probably ain’t making things easy for the WV Democrat….
CG says
As for Asa, I am under no illusion he will be successful in seeking the nomination although there will be some room for someone who pushes the most within the party against Trumpism. I still would hope Liz Cheney would run though.
Also, compared the three previous Presidential candidates who ever lived in the Arkansas Governors’ Mansion, he is far superior.
My Name Is Jack says
I don’t see Manchin leading any third party effort. He doesn’t seem to have the drive nor the backing for such an effort.
He’s probably finished in deep red West Virginia.
Since he remains aDemocrat, Biden could appoint him an ambassador .Manchin might see that as a good way to end his political career.
CG says
I think he is taking steps to be the candidate of the No Labels group, which is securing ballot access. Considering his long odds in West Virginia, he has nothing to lose for now.
Scott P says
Wish casting on your part.
Jack is right here.
jamesb says
Yup on Manchin a ‘marked’ man
Scott P says
As far as “No Labels” I put the chances of them actually securing ballot access and fielding a plausible nominee only slightly higher than the odds of Asa Hutchinson winning the GOP nomination.

He, he, he

A major problem for Manchin as a third party candidate is that he really is a Democrat.
Now we all used to his criticism of Bidens initiatives but,as Politico points out, in the end?
He usually votes with the Democrats.
Since no one would actually believe Manchin will be elected , why would many people vote for “Biden lite” knowing that such a wasted vote would accrue to Trumps benefit, assuming he is the Republican candidate?
Indeed I don’t see the whole No Labels thing getting much traction with Trump as the Republican candidate.
CG says
There is a huge desire for it. Both major parties are very upset thinking that the candidate will be a “spoiler.” No Labels is saying they will end their efforts if that would prove to be the case and their plan is a Democrat/Republican ticket or vice versa. Larry Hogan has not ruled himself out for this possibility either.
Manchin has definitely been more openly critical of Biden lately. He’s 75 himself though.
I just do not think there is a realization among partisans as to just how many people do not want to see another Biden vs. Trump election and will support any reasonable alternative to that whether it is “Biden Lite” or “Trump Lite” or anything else.
Both Trump and Biden are significantly weakened politically since 2020. The Biden Administration has been a good deal more left-wing than anticipated. I understand some people are happy about that but there is very little confidence in Biden. Someone seen as “Biden Lite” who is younger than Biden has a major opportunity.
jamesb says
Biden IS GONNA BE the nominee unless something crazy happens…..
As Jack points out?
The hardcore GOPer’s WILL VOTE for Trump even if he’s in jail…..
CG says
The point is being missed.
Yes, Biden is going to be the nominee.
Yes, Trump might be in jail
Therefore, a lot of the American people are going to want another option.
jamesb says
Oh, I agree CG….
But we’re seeing media about RIGHT NOW…..
Most people aren’t political junkies like us….
CG says
In regards to the RIGHT NOW..
Do the Democrats here believe Senator Feinstein should resign her seat or not?
jamesb says
The Cal Dem US Senator hearing the noise NOW says she’s coming back to work ‘soon’…..
CG says
There was a vote today in the Senate where Manchin joined the Republicans and the final vote was 50-49 in favor of what Republicans wanted. Feinstein not being there cost them a victory.
As somebody who is generally opposed to what Congressional Democrats try to do, that is not a problem for me, but I think committed Democrats might think otherwise.
Feinstein is not just absent from Washington. She is completely invisible. It is of course very sad that her health is poor but she has done no interviews or released any photographs, etc. Durbin, the Chair of the Judiciary Committee, has said he has not spoken to her in months.
There is legitimate reason for skepticism as to if she is “coming back” anytime soon.
jamesb says
Yes….
Sinema and Manchin defections will cost Schumer who never REALLY had the 52 on his side….
My Name Is Jack says
Feinstein should have stepped down a year or so ago.
My Name Is Jack says
CG,
Are you still a Republican?
And by “Republican “ I mean the party as it exists today, not pre 2016 nor what you think it might be in a post Trumpian era.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Third-party or independent may well be the best strategy for Joe Manchin within West Virginia, because alternative labels have worked for idiosyncratic Senators and Senate candidates in idiosyncratic situations in idiosyncratic states. For example, Harry Byrd (Ind., Va), James Buckley (Cons., NY), Bernie Sanders (Ind/Socialist, Vermont), Angus King (Ind., Maine). Joe Lieberman (ind., Conn.)
Plus I don’t think that the W. Va Democrats would put up a candidate against Manchin any more than the Vermont ones did against Bernie Sanders. Kyrsten Sinema is another case entirely; as I understand it, the Arizona Democrats are willing to put up a candidate against her and would likely outpoll her.
jamesb says
Sinema is GONE……
Kerri lake goes for the GOPer’s and the Democrat Ruben Gallego will probably get the spot….
jamesb says
And YES….
Out of the media spotlight?
Manchin votes Democrat the vast majority of the time….
Scott P says
That there are 21 comments on the Hutchimson post and only 2 or 3 even mention him by name is telling of how we can expect his Presidential campaign to go I think.
Scott P says
I don’t see how “No Labels” would go through the efforts of getting on the ballot in all 50 states, finding a willing nominee who has a chance of drawing a majority of votes in enough states to get to270 electoral votes–yet at the same time be willing to pull the plug on the whole thing if they were in danger of becoming a spoiler. How would they make that determination?
In short if you want a viable 3rd party to have a chance at winning you need to abolish the electoral college and move to some sort of ranked choice voting.
Otherwise the system is set up to make any 3rd party or independent effort a spoiler.
jamesb says
I agree Scott…..
3rd Party stuff is just a media push….
Except for some races they will be insignificant
