The Washington Post had a piece on a possible immigration last minute ‘deal’ on the subject….
I doubt that….
Republicans have and continue to use the subject to beat Democrats politically over and OVER with while essentially doing nothing….
‘Securing’ the US Southern Border would actually take TRILLIONS and would hurt the American economy…..
And worst of all for the GOPer’s?
Take away their political whipping stick against the Democrats….
What’s happening: With less than two weeks left in the 117th Congress, the Washington Post reported Monday that Sens. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) were circulating a “draft framework” on immigration reform. The idea that any agreement could move anytime soon, though, came as news to other Senate Republicans on Monday night.
Several GOP senators threw cold water on the idea of a last-minute immigration deal — some saying they simply have not seen any details of the purported Tillis-Sinema pact.
“I think until the Biden administration owns up to its responsibilities on the border, it’s not possible to pass a immigration deal,” said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), a close ally of GOP leader Mitch McConnell. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said that Republican support for any deal would be there “only if the border is secure.”…

The significance: Democrats have been trying to land a deal on immigration reform for this entire Congress, having attempted to add provisions to the first iteration of what became the party-line Inflation Reduction Act only to see them stripped out by the Senate’s rules referee. Since then, there’s been sparse efforts to bring forth a bipartisan bill — and with Republicans ready to take over the House in weeks, chances for any deal are very slim.
Even so, the stakes have gotten higher with a recent circuit court ruling halting all new applicants for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, leaving in limbo the foundation of deportation protection for undocumented Dreamers who were brought to the U.S. at a younger age….
