The barrage of strikes — from Lviv in the west to Mykolaiv in the south and Kharkiv in the northeast — slammed into civilian areas and apparently also sought to cripple energy facilities as winter approaches. The explosions blew out the windows of buildings in central Kyiv, set vehicles ablaze and sent residents scrambling for shelter at a time when many were heading to school or work.
Experts said it was too soon to say whether the strikes would have a significant impact on Ukraine’s military, but they appeared to placate Russian hard-liners who have been calling for Mr. Putin to intensify the war effort. As Ukrainian troops have reclaimed more than 1,200 miles of territory in the east and south in recent weeks, Mr. Putin has faced mounting criticism of his army’s performance and growing opposition to his call-up of hundreds of thousands of civilians into military service.
Here are the latest developments:
-
At least 10 Ukrainian cities came under attack, and regional officials said that electrical power stations and power lines were among the main targets. Electricity outages disrupted internet service, and several cities were left without power and central heating, officials said.
-
Ukrainians had been bracing for retaliatory attacks following the explosion on Saturday that damaged a bridge linking Russia with Crimea. The strike embarrassed Moscow and could hinder its ability to supply its occupying forces in southern Ukraine.
-
Condemnations of Russia’s attacks poured in from world leaders, with NATO’s secretary general denouncing the “horrific & indiscriminate attacks.” India and China, key Russian trading partners that have avoided direct criticism of Mr. Putin’s war, both renewed calls for an immediate de-escalation…..
Russia’s strikes on Monday were unlikely to have a significant impact on Ukraine’s military since they appeared to largely target residential neighborhoods and civilian infrastructure, experts said, but cautioned that it was too soon to know the full extent of the damage.
While Russia’s defense ministry and President Vladimir V. Putin described the attacks as high-precision missile strikes aimed at crippling Ukraine’s ability to fight the war, it was hard to see how some of the targets fit that description. While power plants and communications infrastructure were hit on Monday, so were a playground and a popular pedestrian bridge in central Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital.
“I don’t think they will have a strategic impact,” Konrad Muzyka, a military analyst with Rochan Consulting, said of the strikes. “Unless we’re talking about increasing morale on the Ukrainian side and maybe speeding up some deliveries of military equipment from the West.”…
…
Monday’s strikes will have an extremely negative impact on civilians, who must now face the coming winter not knowing whether they will have stable supplies of heat, said a senior Ukrainian military official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to freely discuss the day’s strikes. But from a military perspective, the official said, the attacks were meaningless.
“The military harm is zero,” the official said. “Our tasks remain unchanged.”….
Note….
A missile landing on the American Embassy in Kyiv would be game changer one would think….
